The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media.

The Press Council is also the principal body with responsibility for responding to complaints about Australian newspapers, magazines and associated digital outlets.

Press Council Updates
New members join Press Council
Council has approved the appointment of two new members: Matthew Ricketson, who will represent the MEAA union, and Anita Quigley, representing Community Newspapers Australia. Read a media release.

Adjudications
The latest adjudications concern unauthorised use of an image of children in The Queensland Times and a complaint by Jennifer Rankine MP concerning articles about her in The Australian.
