GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is a fictional artificially intelligent computer system appearing in the video games Portal and Portal 2. The character was created by Erik Wolpaw and Kim Swift and voiced by Ellen McLain. GLaDOS is responsible for testing and maintenance in the Aperture Science research facility in both titles. While GLaDOS initially appears in the first game to simply be a voice that guides the player, her words and actions become increasingly malicious as she makes her intentions clear. The game reveals that she is corrupted and used a neurotoxin to kill the scientists in the laboratory before the events of Portal. She is ostensibly destroyed at the end of the first game but returns in the sequel, in which she is comically supplanted and temporarily stuck on a potato battery.
The inspiration for the character's creation extends from Wolpaw's use of a text-to-speech program while writing lines for the video game Psychonauts. Other game developers working on Psychonauts found the lines funnier as a result of the synthesized voice. GLaDOS was originally intended to be present solely in the first area of Portal; she was well received by other designers and her role was expanded as a result. Play testers were motivated to complete tests in the game due to her guidance. While the game was initially designed with other characters, they were later removed, leaving GLaDOS as the only character players encounter. The physical appearance of GLaDOS went through several designs, one of which featured a large disk below her. McLain imitated dialog read aloud by a speech synthesizer with her own voice, which was then processed to sound more robotic, and performed songs in character during the closing credits of both entries in the series. "Still Alive" became hugely successful, notably appearing in the Rock Band game series, and has been a popular song for YouTube users to cover.

Plot: This black-and-white contemporary film noir follows the epic console gamer Gordon Freeman (Eric Zagar). He gets his daily dose of DOOM on his iPad while in Quistis Trepe's detention class before she takes it away, announcing that a group project will be required for detention credit. Gordon narrates to himself throughout the film, providing gaming insight to his personal problems. Gordon is assigned to write an essay on Mendel's theories of genetics, and is partnered up with his arch-nemesis, the PC gamer Simon Seseman. Knowing that Simon will never help on this project, Gordon returns home and absorbs himself in playing HALO. His mother GLaDOS offers him cake as he leaves, but Gordon refuses proclaiming that "The Cake Is A Lie!!!". Gordon's girlfriend stops by to play Mass Effect with him, but Gordon says he's not in the mood. Lara encourages him to fight through this challenge, reminding him of all the sacrifices he made to defeat many video games from his past. Gordon continues to play video games after she leaves, finding no relief from his troubles. He finally stops playing video games altogether and curls up with his Sonic The Hedgehog doll, claiming that his future is as pointless as Sonic's own future. His depression however is interrupted as Master Chief (voiced by Christopher M. Cline), appears on the television and speaks directly to him. Gordon admits he has never written an essay before in his life, but Master Chief explains that, like video games, you only get better as you play, and that it's up to him to "use the traits he has". Gordon gets creative inspiration from Master Chief's advice, kisses the television, and flees to his room to write the essay. After finishing his essay, a nap, and a brief loading screen, Gordon calls Simon Seseman over to finish the essay. Simon arrive and pulls out a NERF gun, demanding that Gordon hand over the finished essay. Gordon pulls out his own NERF gun, and engage in a stand-off after trashing each other's gaming preferences. Gordon asks how Simon even learned how to use a NERF gun, revealing Lara Croft from behind him. Gordon discovers that Simon and Lara have been conspiring against him, and Lara pulls out her own NERF gun and aims it at Gordon. Gordon shoots Simon in the groin, eye, and face, knocking him to the floor and stealing his NERF gun. Gordon breaks up with Lara and leaves to turn in his essay. Gordon narrates to himself as he walks back to school about how much he loves his video games and how they've defined his life and personality. Gordon turns in his essay to Quistis and his iPad is returned. As he plays DOOM once more, Quistis returns with his essay, now graded, with a 74% passing grade.

Come let away that's what they all do
Help me ‘cause I'm feeling shaky
Tell me what's wrong with my brain
'Cause I've seem to have lost it

Yeah you know what I mean
And I can't sleep alone at night
yeah you know what I mean
Lonely, that's not quite my problem
I have all that I need, haven't quite lost it
I try so hard to be happy
'Cause something goes wrong once again
Please, please come and save me
Tell me what's wrong with my brain
