Also, I mention my computer as the $4,000 and it isn't—the base Mac Pro is $3,000. I did update the M.2 SSD to 1TB and so my specific machine is closer to $4,000; however, I apologize for the mistake.
Apple's Mac Pro has always had a hefty price tag, but it's 2016 and Apple hasn't updated the product line since 2013. Are we to the point where cheap PC builds can absolutely smoke the Mac Pro for a fraction of the cost? Yep.

A lot of people have asked me about this, and hackintoshes, so I did a video on it. It's a bit long and a bit boring, but this should tell you everything you need to know if you want to do something similar.
This is a great way to get a 100% genuine mac to do software development on that also doesn't break the bank.
Be sure you carefully check that the CPUs you might get are compatible. These Macs can be tempermental.
Unfortunately, thunderbolt is just not an option for these, though. No thunderbolt support from the chipset, so I'm not sure that'll ever be possible.
"Scratch and Dent Mac Pro": $50
2x Intel x5650 Xeon CPUs: $50 (I had these on hand from an old server I retired)
8x 8gb ram server ram: ~$100 (I had these on hadn too from old server)
500 gb SSHD: $50
miscelany: $30

GTX 760: $75 (originally a GT110 which works, but isn't great)
PCIe SSD: $lots (supa-fast PCIe SSD storage)
The $350 here is a "good deal" because the mac pro looked like hell. If you get the system for less than $500

Welcome to my second Review of the Apple Mac Pro with Quad Core Intel XEON E5 processor. After using the Mac Pro for over 2 years it is now time again to take a look at how the machine handled 4K video editing from the Sony AX100E as well as the Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera. Despite the fact that the performance of the Mac Pro is not much higher than the current 5K iMac, I am still very satisfied with the machine. The excellent cooling allows for near silent operation even while rendering 4K videos and the 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports allow you to hook up to 6 monitors.

- 12GB 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory

Apple has introduced a new version of the high-end Mac Pro desktop at WWDC 2013. The updated model skips Intel's fourth generation of Core i-series processors, previously codenamed Haswell, instead sticking with pro-level Xeon processors.
But it's the design of this new Mac Pro that became a conversation topic: instead of a big square box, the new Pro is a shiny black cylinder that looks like it fell off the engine of a starship.
Steve Jobs had a similar dream years ago in the G4 Cube, a famously minimal gleaming box that was meant to represent the future of desktop computers. The Cube was a cult favorite more than a commercial success, but the new Mac Pro feels like the clear revival of that black-box dream. Instead of cube, think cylinder.

The Mac Pro is a workstation computer manufactured by Apple Inc. The machines are based on Xeon microprocessors, but are similar to the Power Mac G5 they replaced in terms of outward appearance and expansion capabilities. The Mac Pro, in most configurations, is the fastest computer that Apple offers and one of three desktop computers in the current Macintosh lineup, the other two being the iMac and Mac Mini.
The first Mac Pro was based on dual Dual-core Xeon Woodcrest processors and formally announced on August 7, 2006 at WWDC. A new Intel Xeon-based Xserve was announced along with the Mac Pro, completing Apple's transition from the PowerPC to x86 architecture.
On April 4, 2007, a dual Quad-core Xeon Clovertown model was launched and it was replaced on January 8, 2008 by a dual Quad-core Xeon Harpertown model. The current model Mac Pro was announced on July 27, 2010 and features Intel Xeon processors based on the Nehalem microarchitecture/Westmere microarchitecture. There are options of up to 12 processing cores, up to four optional 2TB hard disk drives/512GB solid state drives and ATI Radeon HD 5770/5870 graphics.

Welcome to my second Review of the Apple Mac Pro with Quad Core Intel XEON E5 processor. After using the Mac Pro for over 2 years it is now time again to take a look at how the machine handled 4K video editing from the Sony AX100E as well as the Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera. Despite the fact that the performance of the Mac Pro is not much higher than the current 5K iMac, I am still very satisfied with the machine. The excellent cooling allows for near silent operation even while rendering 4K videos and the 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports allow you to hook up to 6 monitors. Apple WWDC 2013 - Mac Pro 2013 Introduction
Apple has introduced a new version of the high-end Mac Pro desktop at WWDC 2013. The updated model skips Intel's fourth generation of Core i-series processors, previously codenamed Haswell, instead sticking with pro-level Xeon processors. But it's the design of this new Mac Pro that became a conversation topic: instead of a big square box, the new Pro is a shiny black cylinder that looks like it fell off the engine of a starship. Steve Jobs had a similar dream years ago in the G4 Cube, a famously minimal gleaming box that was meant to represent the future of desktop computers. The Cube was a cult favorite more than a commercial success, but the new Mac Pro feels like the clear revival of that black-box dream. Instead of cube, think cylinder. -

Apple's Mac Pro has always had a hefty price tag, but it's 2016 and Apple hasn't updated the product line since 2013. Are we to the point where cheap PC builds can absolutely smoke the Mac Pro for a fraction of the cost? Yep.

A lot of people have asked me about this, and hackintoshes, so I did a video on it. It's a bit long and a bit boring, but this should tell you everything you need to know if you want to do something similar.
This is a great way to get a 100% genuine mac to do software development on that also doesn't break the bank.
Be sure you carefully check that the CPUs you might get are compatible. These Macs can be tempermental.
Unfortunately, thunderbolt is just not an option for these, though. No thunderbolt support from the chipset, so I'm not sure that'll ever be possible.
"Scratch and Dent Mac Pro": $50
2x Intel x5650 Xeon CPUs: $50 (I had these on hand from an old server I retired)
8x 8gb ram server ram: ~$100 (I had these on hadn too from old server)
500 gb SSHD: $50
miscelany: $30
upgrades:
GTX 760: $75 (originally a GT110 which works, but isn't great)
PCIe SSD: $lots (supa-fast PCIe SSD storage)
The $350 here is a "good deal" because the mac pro looked like hell. If you get the system for less than $500

After using the Mac Pro for over 2 years it is now time again to take a look at how the machine handled 4K video editing from the Sony AX100E as well as the Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera. Despite the fact that the performance of the Mac Pro is not much higher than the current 5K iMac, I am still very satisfied with the machine. The excellent cooling allows for near silent operation even while rendering 4K videos and the 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports allow you to hook up to 6 monitors.

Apple has introduced a new version of the high-end Mac Pro desktop at WWDC 2013. The updated model skips Intel's fourth generation of Core i-series processors, previously codenamed Haswell, instead sticking with pro-level Xeon processors.
But it's the design of this new Mac Pro that became a conversation topic: instead of a big square box, the new Pro is a shiny black cylinder that looks like it fell off the engine of a starship.

Can’t replace RAM; unless you get older 2012 version from Apple Refurbished. The Mac Mini is the entry-level Mac desktop. It’s the cheapest and most suitable for people on a tight budget who already own a monitor, keyboard, mouse. It doesn’t come with any accessories. I own a Mac Mini and it’s worked out great for me. Powerful and fast for such a compact machine. I highly recommend getting a fusion or SSD. Avoid 5400 RPM hard drives.

Apple’s all-in-one desktop and probably their most popular desktop model. It comes with Magic Mouse 2, Magic keyboard, and a lightning cable. Best for users who want a more powerful and simple setup than a Mini and who don’t already own an HD monitor. The all-in-one setup looks cleaner and less cluttered on a desk. Incredible Retina screens. Overall a beautiful computer/monitor combo.

Apple’s top-of-the-line desktop. The most powerful and the most expensive. Recommended for power users - people who need the fastest and most powerful Mac computer who have a very large budget (can be configured to nearly $10,000). It has a unique design that may look weird to some people but is very sleek. Con: for the high price you don’t even get a keyboard/mouse :(

Can’t replace RAM; unless you get older 2012 version from Apple Refurbished. The Mac Mini is the entry-level Mac desktop. It’s the cheapest and most suitable for people on a tight budget who already own a monitor, keyboard, mouse. It doesn’t come with any accessories. I own a Mac Mini and it’s worked out great for me. Powerful and fast for such a compact machine. I highly recommend getting a fusion or SSD. Avoid 5400 RPM hard drives.

Apple’s all-in-one desktop and probably their most popular desktop model. It comes with Magic Mouse 2, Magic keyboard, and a lightning cable. Best for users who want a more powerful and simple setup than a Mini and who don’t already own an HD monitor. The all-in-one setup looks cleaner and less cluttered on a desk. Incredible Retina screens. Overall a beautiful computer/monitor combo.

Apple’s top-of-the-line desktop. The most powerful and the most expensive. Recommended for power users - people who need the fastest and most powerful Mac computer who have a very large budget (can be configured to nearly $10,000). It has a unique design that may look weird to some people but is very sleek. Con: for the high price you don’t even get a keyboard/mouse :(
