Oldest Chinook in the Army fleet firing up at Boeing Field for a flight down to Ft. Lewis.
The CH-47 Chinook helicopter has been around for nearly 50 years, but 50 years later it is still an amazing aircraft. Here are a few of the things that make it amazing:
Twin 60 foot rotors give the helicopter amazing lift -- it can haul up to 28,000 pounds of cargo either inside or attached to exterior hooks.
It can carry up to 33 seated passengers, 37 people total with crew. Given it's cargo rating, you could cram on a lot more people.
It has two gas turbine engines producing nearly 4,000 horsepower to drive the rotors.
Just over 1,000 gallons of fuel on board give it a range of over 400 miles.
Lack of a tail rotor makes it more stable in windy conditions and also allows for a rear cargo ramp.
The rear cargo ramp makes certain things possible that would be impossible for just about any other aircraft. For example, the CH-47 can hover over water and a boat can drive right in for water extraction, like this:

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its primary roles are troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) the helicopter is faster than contemporary utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. Its name is from the Native American Chinook people.
The Chinook was designed and initially produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s; it is now produced by Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. It is one of the few aircraft of that era -- along with the fixed-wing Lockheed C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft -- that remain in production and front-line service, with over 1,179 built to date. The helicopter has been sold to 16 nations with the U.S. Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK variants)) its largest users. The U.S. Army plans to operate the CH-47 Chinook until 2038

The Chinook is a unique double rotor easy to fly rc helicopter. It handles similar to other coaxial helicopters by Syma but tends to need more "trim" correction. It flies slow so if you do fly it outside there must be no wind and plenty of shade. It does fly best inside and can be flown with another helicopter!

Watch as the British pilot (Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune) of this Chinook takes multiple hits, including a glancing shot to his own head, on a troop extraction run in Afghanistan. This is the definition of a hero. The Chinook took multiple hits severing a hydraulic line, raking the fuselage and windshield with rounds. Watch as the pilot takes a glancing ricochet to his left temple and manages to keep his wits about him, saying "Ok chaps, just to let you know I took a round through my front windscreen which came up and hit me on the head." Twin 60 foot rotors give the helicopter amazing lift -- it can haul up to 28,000 pounds of cargo either inside or attached to exterior hooks.
It can carry up to 33 seated passengers, 37 people total with crew. Given it's cargo rating, you could cram on a lot more people.
It has two gas turbine engines producing nearly 4,000 horsepower to drive the rotors.
Just over 1,000 gallons of fuel on board give it a range of over 400 miles.
Lack of a tail rotor makes it more stable in windy conditions and also allows for a rear cargo ramp.
The rear cargo ramp makes certain things possible that would be impossible for just about any other aircraft. For example, the CH-47 can hover over water and a boat can drive right in for water extraction, like this:

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its primary roles are troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) the helicopter is faster than contemporary utility and attack helicopters of the 1960s. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. Its name is from the Native American Chinook people.
The Chinook was designed and initially produced by Boeing Vertol in the early 1960s; it is now produced by Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. It is one of the few aircraft of that era -- along with the fixed-wing Lockheed C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft -- that remain in production and front-line service, with over 1,179 built to date. The helicopter has been sold to 16 nations with the U.S. Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK variants)) its largest users. The U.S. Army plans to operate the CH-47 Chinook until 2038

The Chinook is a unique double rotor easy to fly rc helicopter. It handles similar to other coaxial helicopters by Syma but tends to need more "trim" correction. It flies slow so if you do fly it outside there must be no wind and plenty of shade. It does fly best inside and can be flown with another helicopter!

The Chinook took multiple hits severing a hydraulic line, raking the fuselage and windshield with rounds.
Watch as the pilot takes a glancing ricochet to his left temple and manages to keep his wits about him, saying "Ok chaps, just to let you know I took a round through my front windscreen which came up and hit me on the head." Even the Sun reporter does well to keep his composure during the report, as he himself is faced with the very real possibility of a crash and death.
