Nawab Sahib (Badri Prasad) lives with his wife, the Begum (Pratima Devi) and their young daughter Suraiya (Munawwar Sultana). While attending a function at an orphanage, he becomes impressed by a student, Iqbal (Nusrat) and brings him home. After some initial friction Suraiya and the boy become friends. Iqbal grows up to become a doctor while Suraiya falls in love with him. She gifts him a big diamond ring. A friend (Husn Banu) of Suraiya's takes great pleasure in teasing the two, which Suraiya doesn't mind but is frowned upon by Iqbal.
Iqbal decides to serve at a village where there is an outbreak of plague. Here he meets Hamida (Suraiya) and the two fall in love in-between his ministrations to the sick. One of the villagers, Dilawar (Shyam Kumar), is a suitor of Hamida and jealous of the love interest between Hamida and Iqbal. Dilawar blackmails Iqbal about their romance, threatening to inform Nawab Sahib unless Iqbal gives him Rs. 10, 000. A scared Iqbal gives Dilawar the diamond ring gifted to him by Suraiya. Iqbal falls ill and the Nawab arrives with an ambulance to take him home. Hamida's father is killed by Dilawar, who then proceeds to lie to Hamida, telling her that Iqbal had left the ring for her and gives it to her. Hamida accepts it and wears it on her finger.
Hamida is taken in by the Nawab who brings her back to his house. Misunderstandings arise between Iqbal and Hamida when he sees the ring. The two however get back together again with their differences resolved. . Suraiya in the meanwhile shows symptoms of consumption, with coughing and fever. A marriage is arranged between her and Iqbal. Suraiya finds out about their love and she sacrifices her love for the two and dies.

Classic Mehboob incest film. Elder brother Amar (Mukhtar) saves the life of his infant sister Bina and raises her, becoming very possessiv about her. When Bina grows up (Jaywant), the progressive social activist Rajendra (Harish) wants to marry her. Amar then plots to get a thief, Moti (Kanhaiyalal), to marry and immediately abandon her so that she will foreverremain dependent on Amar. Eventually she does get married and the brothers grief is alleviated only when his sister delivers a child ( in a remarkable sequence fraturing the nurses at the hospital). The incest motif was widely used to represent the complexities of an Aryan agrarian-feudal patriarchy (e.g. the New Theatres Meri Bahen, 1944, and, classically, in Ghataks Subarnarekha, 1962), but Mehboob was distinctive in making it a central focus.

Prof. Husn Banu Ghazanfar (born: February 1, 1957) is a politician in Afghanistan, serving as the Minister of Women's Affairs. She is also a writer, a poet, and a speaker.
Ghazanfar, daughter of Abdul Ghafar, was born in Balkh Province on February 1, 1957. She graduated from Sultan Razia High School in Mazar-e-Sharif and obtained her BA and Master's degree on Literature and Sociology from Stawarpool Qafqaaz. In around 1983 she was involved in Kabul University's Literature Faculty program. About two years later, she went to Petersburg, Russia, to obtain her Doctrine on Philology. An ethnic Uzbek, she is fluent in Dari (Persian), Pashto, Uzbek, Russian, and she knows a little Turkish and English.
In 2003, she was appointed as the Head of the Literature Faculty. In July 2006, Ghazanfar received vote of confidence from the National Assembly of Afghanistan (Parliament) to become Minister of Women's Affairs.

She has written a number of scientific articles and essays, which have been published in the national and international newspapers. She is also a poet and writes works of literature, her books are The Human Fate, Predations in the 21st Century, The Secrets of Beauty and Attraction. The book Self Realization was translated by her.

Perhaps the most daunting of these are the continuing violence and insecurity that disproportionately impede women's access to essential rights and services for themselves and their children. Because they are so directly affected by the problem of conflict in Afghanistan, women must be an integral part of the solution. This was the consensus view at a recent panel discussion on Afghan women's participation in peace-building. UNICEF and UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, co-sponsored the discussion, which took place at UNICEF headquarters on 5 March. It was held as a side event to last week's 54th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. In this video, Afghan Minister of Women's Affairs Dr. Husn Banu Ghazanfar talks about women's role in building sustainable peace. -

Dilawar blackmails Iqbal about their romance, threatening to inform Nawab Sahib unless Iqbal gives him Rs. 10, 000. A scared Iqbal gives Dilawar the diamond ring gifted to him by Suraiya. Iqbal falls ill and the Nawab arrives with an ambulance to take him home. Hamida's father is killed by Dilawar, who then proceeds to lie to Hamida, telling her that Iqbal had left the ring for her and gives it to her. Hamida accepts it and wears it on her finger.
Hamida is taken in by the Nawab who brings her back to his house. Misunderstandings arise between Iqbal and Hamida when he sees the ring. The two however get back together again with their differences resolved. . Suraiya in the meanwhile shows symptoms of consumption, with coughing and fever. A marriage is arranged between her and Iqbal. Suraiya finds out about their love and she sacrifices her love for the two and dies.

Eventually she does get married and the brothers grief is alleviated only when his sister delivers a child ( in a remarkable sequence fraturing the nurses at the hospital). The incest motif was widely used to represent the complexities of an Aryan agrarian-feudal patriarchy (e.g. the New Theatres Meri Bahen, 1944, and, classically, in Ghataks Subarnarekha, 1962), but Mehboob was distinctive in making it a central focus.

NEW YORK, USA, 9 March 2010 More than eight years after the fall of the Taliban regime, the women of Afghanistan still face enormous challenges. Perhaps the most daunting of these are the continuing violence and insecurity that disproportionately impede women's access to essential rights and services for themselves and their children.
Because they are so directly affected by the problem of conflict in Afghanistan, women must be an integral part of the solution. This was the consensus view at a recent panel discussion on Afghan women's participation in peace-building.
UNICEF and UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, co-sponsored the discussion, which took place at UNICEF headquarters on 5 March. It was held as a side event to last week's 54th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Dard (Pain) is a 1947 Bollywood drama film directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar. The film was produced by Kardar Productions. It was a surprise "musical hit" at the box-office as it had an ordinary (for then) star cast. Suraiya played the second lead, with Munawwar Sultana as the main heroine. The film was Suraiya's first "big hit", becoming a popular singing star following the success of the film. The hero of the film was Kardar's brother Nusrat (Kardar), who shifted to Pakistan following Partition in 1947, where he acted in a few films. The music director was Naushad who composed the "hit" songs for the film, which continue to remain popular. The lyricist was Shakeel Badayuni, an "accomplished Urdu poet" who had arrived in Mumbai in 1946, to write songs for Hindi films. He was signed by Naushad and Kardar to write the lyrics for Dard. His "Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon" (I Am Writing A Tale) sung by Uma Devi went on to become successful as did the other songs from the film.
Nawab Sahib (Badri Prasad) lives with his wife, the Begum (Pratima Devi) and their young daughter Suraiya (Munawwar Sultana). While attending a function at an orphanage, he becomes impressed by a student, Iqbal (Nusrat) and brings him home. After some initial friction Suraiya and the boy become friends. Iqbal grows up to become a doctor while Suraiya falls in love with him. She gifts him a big diamond ring. A friend (Husn Banu) of Suraiya's takes great pleasure in teasing the two, which Suraiya doesn't mind but is frowned upon by Iqbal. Iqbal decides to serve at a village where there is an outbreak of plague. Here he meets Hamida (Suraiya) and the two fall in love in-between his ministrations to the sick. One of the villagers, Dilawar (Shyam Kumar), is a suitor of Hamida and jealous of the love interest between Hamida and Iqbal. Dilawar blackmails Iqbal about their romance, threatening to inform Nawab Sahib unless Iqbal gives him Rs. 10, 000. A scared Iqbal gives Dilawar the diamond ring gifted to him by Suraiya. Iqbal falls ill and the Nawab arrives with an ambulance to take him home. Hamida's father is killed by Dilawar, who then proceeds to lie to Hamida, telling her that Iqbal had left the ring for her and gives it to her. Hamida accepts it and wears it on her finger. Hamida is taken in by the Nawab who brings her back to his house. It is here Hamida hopes to re-kindle her romance with Iqbal but instead will not only face rejection from him, but also be accused of theft.

Their fairy tale world is shattered when Lata is accused of interfering in palace affairs and blamed for stealing a valuable necklace — with hir mother testifying that she found it in Lata's purse. When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 1996, Habiba Sarabi fled to Pakistan so she could continue her practice as a pharmacist and so her daughter could continue her education. During this time, Sarabi also made trips to European countries to publicize the plight of Afghan women. When the Taliban was forced from power, Sarabi returned home and in 2005 became the first woman to be appointed governor of any of the country's 34 provinces. Since then, she has advocated for women's rights and for greater representation of women in Afghanistan's government, and she has worked to maintain relative peace in her province.
