The Siachen Glacier lies immediately south of the great watershed that separates the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent in the extensively glaciated portion of the Karakoram sometimes called the "Third Pole". The glacier lies between the Saltoro Ridge immediately to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east. The Saltoro Ridge originates in the north from the Sia Kangri peak on the China border in the Karakoram range. The crest of the Saltoro Ridge's altitudes range from 5,450 to 7,720 m (17,880 to 25,330 feet). The major passes on this ridge are, from north to south, Sia La at 5,589 m (18,336 ft), Bilafond La at 5,450 m (17,880 ft), and Gyong La at 5,689 m (18,665 ft). The average winter snowfall is more than 1000 cm(35 ft) and temperatures can dip to −50 °C (−58 °F). Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 km2 (270 sq mi).

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.5°N 77.0°E, just east of the Line of Control between India-Pakistan. India controls all of the Siachen Glacier itself, including all tributary glaciers. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m (18,875 ft) above sea level at its head at Indira Col (pass) on the China border down to 3,620 m (11,875 ft) at its terminus.

Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 km2 (270 sq mi).
The Siachen Glacier boasts the world's highest helipad, built by India. The world's highest battlefield is also located on the glacier at a height of 21,000 feet (6400 m) above the sea level. GSM mobile service was launched in 2009 near army base camp
Operation Meghdoot was the name given to the attack launched by the Indian Military to capture the Siachen Glacier in the disputed Kashmir region, precipitating the Siachen Conflict. Launched on April 13, 1984, this military operation was unique as the first assault launched in the world's highest battlefield. The military action eventually resulted in Indian troops managing to gain control of the entire Siachen Glacier. Today, the occupation of locations along what is known as the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL) continues to be known as Operation Meghdoot, with up to 10 Infantry Battalions each of the Indian Army and Pakistani Army actively deployed in altitudes up to 6,400 metre
The Siachen Glacier became a bone of contention following a vague demarcation of territory as per the Simla Agreement of 1972, which did not exactly specify who had authority over the Siachen Glacier area. As a result of this, both nations lay claim to the barren land. In the 1970s and early 80s, Pakistan permitted several mountaineering expeditions to climb the peaks in the Siachen region. This served to reinforce their claim on the area as these expeditions arrived on the glacier with a permit obtained from the Government of Pakistan. Indian sources claim that in many cases a liaison officer from the Pakistan army accompanied the teams. In 1978 the Indian Army began closely monitoring the situation in the region and concurrently India also allowed mountaineering expeditions to the glacier, approaching from its side. The most notable one was the one launched by Colonel N. Kumar of the Indian Army, who mounted an Army expedition to Teram Kangri as a counter-exercise.
When Pakistan gave permission to a Japanese expedition to scale an important peak (Rimo I) in 1984, it further prompted Indian anger. The peak, located east of the Siachen Glacier, also overlooks the northwestern areas of the Aksai Chin area which is occupied by China but claimed by India. The Indian military believed that such an expedition could further a link for a trade route from the southwestern (Pakistani) to the northeastern (Chinese) side of the Karakoram Range and eventually provide a strategic, if not tactical, advantage to the Pakistan Military.

At least 10 soldiers of the Indian Army, including one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), are reported missing after an avalanche in the northern Jammu and Kashmir's Siachen Glacier. TIMES NOW have the first images of the rescue operations. The deadly avalanche hit the post situated at 19,600 feet in Northern Glacier sector in Ladakh region in the world's highest battlefield yesterday in which a JCO and nine jawans were trapped. The missing personnel were attached to Madras battalion stationed at the post, which is buried under tonnes of snow. As the rescue operations by specialized teams of the Army and the Air Force entered the second day today, Col Goswami said specialised equipment was flown to Leh in the morning. The glaciated area presents temperatures ranging from a minimum of minus 42 degrees Celsius in the night to maximum of minus 25 degrees C during the day, he said.

INDIAN ARMY ON WORLD'S HIGHEST & MOST INHOSPITABLE BATTLEFIELD - SIACHEN GLACIER

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.5°N 77.0°E, just east of the Line of Control between India-Pakistan. India controls most of the Siachen Glacier itself, including most tributary glaciers. At 70 km long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5,753 m above sea level at its head at Indira Col on the China border down to 3,620 m at its terminus.
The Siachen Glacier lies immediately south of the great watershed that separates China from the Indian subcontinent in the extensively glaciated portion of the Karakoram that is sometimes called the "Third Pole." The glacier lies between the Saltoro Ridge immediately to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east. The Saltoro Ridge originates in the north from the Sia Kangri peak on the China border in the Karakoram range. The crest of the Saltoro Ridge's altitudes range from 5,450 to 7,720 m. The major passes on this ridge are, from north to south, Sia La at 5,589 m, Bilafond La at 5,450 m, and Gyong La at 5,689 m. The average winter snowfall is 10.5 m and temperatures can dip below −60 °C. Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 sq. km
The glacier's region is the highest battleground on earth, where India and Pakistan have fought intermittently since April 1984. Both countries maintain permanent military presence in the region at a height of over 6,000 metres (20,000 ft). The site is one of the most eminent examples of mountain warfare.
Both India and Pakistan have wished to disengage from the costly military outposts. However, after the Pakistani incursions during the Kargil War in 1999, India abandoned plans to withdraw from Siachen unless there's an official recognition of the current line of control by Pakistan, wary of further Pakistani incursions if they vacate the Siachen Glacier posts without such recognition.
Since September 2007, India has opened up mountaineering and trekking expeditions to the forbidding glacial heights. The first group included cadets from Chail Military School, National Defence Academy, National Cadet Corps, Indian Military Academy, Rashtriya Indian Military College and family members of armed forces officers. The expeditions are also meant to show to the international audience that Indian troops hold "almost all dominating heights" on the important Saltoro Ridge and to show that Pakistani troops are not within 24 km of the Siachen Glacier. Ignoring protests from Pakistan, India maintains that it does not need anyone's approval to send trekkers to Siachen, in what it says is essentially its own territory. In addition, the Indian Army's Army Mountaineering Institute (AMI) functions out of the region.

STORYLINE:
Pakistan summoned a senior Indian diplomat on Monday to protest plans to let tourists visit the world's highest battlefield in disputed Kashmir, and said it could harm peace talks between the South Asian neighbours.
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said it expressed its "deep concern" to the Indian Deputy High Commissioner over media reports that a tour group was heading to the 6,100-metre (20,000-foot) -high Siachen glacier.
Thousands of Pakistani and Indian troops have confronted each other in the area since 1984, when Indian forces occupied the glacier.
More troops have died due to the inhospitable conditions than from hostile fire.
Tensions have declined since a cease-fire was agreed in 2003, though the two sides, which have fought two wars over Kashmir, have reached no breakthrough in efforts to resolve the dispute.
"The area remains a conflict zone and the reported move by India could aggravate the situation with serious consequences that could vitiate the peace process," said Tasnim Aslam, spokeswoman for the Pakistani foreign ministry.
Weekend media reports in India quoted the chief of army staff as saying that the military wanted to let people from India and the rest of the world enjoy the area's natural beauty.
An information camp has already been set up to provide details to visitors of sightseeing and adventure spots on the glacier, said General J.J. Singh, according to The Hindu newspaper.
On Monday, Indian military spokesman Colonel S.K. Sakhuja confirmed only that the military planned to send a group of soldiers, army cadets and "some civilians" on a 20-day trip to the area.
He said it was not clear whether such trips would take place on a regular basis.
