India's caste system has a legacy of persecution and discrimination. One of the few hopes for the country's 240 million Untouchables is a grass-roots movement that is changing Dalit's lives across the country.
Political activist M.C Raj has found himself at the forefront of The Dalit Movement. Born into the untouchable caste, Raj tirelessly campaigns for the recognition of the rights of the Dalits. According to Raj it begins with the right to own land. "Only then can we end dependence on caste forces", he argues. Discrimination against Dalits has been prohibited by law since 1949, but in practice segregation persists today. That's why, despite the significant gains made by the movement, Raj refuses to stand still. "Of course we always live under threat to our lives, but that is immaterial for us. We are ready to die. Our people should have land."

160 million people in India have been born outside any caste; they are called Untouchables and nobody is allowed to touch them for fear of infection!
They call themselves "dalit" which means "broken, shattered people". Every day, two dalits are murdered, three dalit women are raped and two dalit homes are engulfed in flames, torched by members of the higher castes. In the province of Bihar entire villages of the "shattered" are wiped out by extreme right-wing paramilitaries of the higher castes. In other provinces, the Untouchables have no access to drinking water, cannot enter temples or use public transport. Even at police stations they are often asked to pay "admission"... The documentary records gruesome images of violence and discrimination; images of the trampling of every sense of human rights. Moreover, it reveals the extent of what international bodies describe as the "secret apartheid" of India. A stunning story of class and social discrimination which, with religion as an alibi, has reproduced itself for centuries.

Caste is an elaborate and complex social system that combines some or all elements of endogamy, hereditary transmission of occupation, social class, social identity, hierarchy, exclusion and power. Haviland defines caste as a closed form of social stratification in which membership is determined by birth and remains fixed for life; castes are also endogamous and offsprings are automatically members of their parent's caste.
Some literature suggests that the term caste should not be confused with race or social class, e.g. members of different castes in one society may belong to the same race or class, as in India, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Yemen or Europe. Usually, but not always, members of the same caste are of the same social rank, have similar group of occupations and typically have mores which distinguish it from other groups. Other literature, inspired independently by Kingsley Davis and by Robert Merton, suggest that caste systems come in two forms: racial caste systems and non-racial caste systems.

Zakir Abdul Karim Naik (Urdu: ذاکر عبدالکریم نائیک; born 18 October 1965) is an Indian public speaker on the subject of Islam and comparative religion. He is the founder and president of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), a non-profit organisation that owns the Peace TV channel based in Dubai, UAE. He is sometimes referred to as a televangelist. Before becoming a public speaker, he trained as a doctor. He has written two booklets on Islam and comparative religion. He is regarded as an exponent of the Salafi ideology; he places a strong emphasis on individual scholarship and the rejection of "blind Taqlid", which has led him to repudiate the relevance of sectarian or Madh'hab designations, all the while reaffirming their importance.
Zakir Abdul Karim Naik was born on 18 October 1965 in Mumbai, India. He attended St. Peter's High School in Mumbai. Later he enrolled at Kishinchand Chellaram College, before studying medicine at Topiwala National Medical College and Nair Hospital and later the University of Mumbai, where he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). His wife, Farhat Naik, works for the women's section of the IRF.

India 160 million people in India have been born outside any caste; they are called Untouchables and nobody is allowed to touch them for fear of infection! They call themselves "dalit" which means "broken, shattered people". Every day, two dalits are murdered, three dalit women are raped and two dalit homes are engulfed in flames, torched by members of the higher castes. In the province of Bihar entire villages of the "shattered" are wiped out by extreme right-wing paramilitaries of the higher castes. In other provinces, the Untouchables have no access to drinking water, cannot enter temples or use public transport. Even at police stations they are often asked to pay "admission"... The documentary records gruesome images of violence and discrimination; images of the trampling of every sense of human rights. Moreover, it reveals the extent of what international bodies describe as the "secret apartheid" of India. India's caste system has a legacy of persecution and discrimination. One of the few hopes for the country's 240 million Untouchables is a grass-roots movement that is changing Dalit's lives across the country.
Political activist M.C Raj has found himself at the forefront of The Dalit Movement. Born into the untouchable caste, Raj tirelessly campaigns for the recognition of the rights of the Dalits. According to Raj it begins with the right to own land. "Only then can we end dependence on caste forces", he argues. Discrimination against Dalits has been prohibited by law since 1949, but in practice segregation persists today. That's why, despite the significant gains made by the movement, Raj refuses to stand still. "Of course we always live under threat to our lives, but that is immaterial for us. We are ready to die. Our people should have land."

In other provinces, the Untouchables have no access to drinking water, cannot enter temples or use public transport. Even at police stations they are often asked to pay "admission"... The documentary records gruesome images of violence and discrimination; images of the trampling of every sense of human rights. Moreover, it reveals the extent of what international bodies describe as the "secret apartheid" of India. A stunning story of class and social discrimination which, with religion as an alibi, has reproduced itself for centuries.

Speaking with Maoist politicians and the disillusioned dalits, this report explores the harsh daily reality of the Nepalese caste system. However, if a Muslim is oppressed here, there is protest against that in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries around the world, as well as if a Christian is terrorized here, there is similar protest against that in America until our government is shaken. But we always face continuous oppression from the Hindu system, so now we have realized that if we want to save our future, then we have to abandon this system. That is why we are wearing this cap. In fact, this is a sort of struggle against that.
The interviewer: Then have you become a Muslim by wearing this cap?
The interviewed: I cannot claim that I have become a Muslim, but we are sure that we are not Hindu anymore. In addition, we will struggle continuously in the future on a wider level to make the people aware of this problem. The system that makes some human beings lower and some of them higher is not a religion.
The interviewer: What is the method of conversion to Islam; is wearing a cap a sign of conversion? Or there are other things?
The interviewed: Yes, wearing a cap, and performing the prayer, and reciting the Kalimah (Ash hadu alla ilaha illallah, wa ash hadu anna Muhammadan rasul ullah"
"I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is a Messenger of Allah.")
And we will follow all those methods and the required procedures accordingly.
The interviewer: Suppose, tomorrow you got your right (or justice), will you leave Islam and will you return to Hinduism?
The interviewed: We never will return to Hindu religion even if we got the justice.

There is no caste system in vedas | The Four Varnas | Sanātana Dharma

The two words commonly considered to mean ‘caste’ are Jaati and Varna. However the truth is that, all the three mean completely different things. Caste is a European innovation having no semblance in Vedic culture. Jaati Jaati means a classification based on source of origin. Nyaya Sutra states “Samaanaprasavaatmika Jaatih” or those having similar birth source form a Jaati. An initial broad classification made by Rishis is 4-fold: Udbhija (coming out of ground like plants), Andaja (coming out of eggs like birds and reptiles), Pindaja (mammals) and Ushmaj (reproducing due to temperature and ambient conditions like virus, bacteria etc). Similarly, various animals like elephant, lion, rabbits etc form different ‘Jaati’. In same manner, entire humanity forms one ‘Jaati’. A particular Jaati will have similar physical characteristics, cannot change from one Jaati to another and cannot cross-breed. Thus Jaati is creation of Ishwar or God. Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra are no way different Jaati because there is no difference in source of birth or even physical characteristics to differentiate between them. Later, word ‘Jaati’ started being used to imply any kind of classification. Thus in common usage, we call even different communities as different ‘Jaati’. However that is merely convenience of usage. In reality, all humans form one single Jaati. Varna The actual word used for Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra is ‘Varna’ and not Jaati. The word ‘Varna’ is used not only for these four, but also for Dasyu and Arya. ‘Varna’ means one that is adopted by choice. Thus, while Jaati is provided by God, ‘Varna’ is our own choice. Those who choose to be Arya are called ‘Arya Varna’. Those who choose to be Dasyu become ‘Dasyu Varna’. Same for Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. That is why Vedic Dharma is called ‘Varnashram Dharma’. The word Varna itself implies that this is based on complete freedom of choice and meritocracy. 3. Those involved in intellectual activities have chosen ‘Brahmin Varna’. Those into defense and warfare are ‘Kshatriya Varna’. Those in economics and animal rearing are ‘Vaishya Varna’ and those involved in other support functions are “Shudra Varna”. Panchayat President Krishnaveni, who was attacked cruelly on 13.06.2011 (Monday) night, barely escaping with her life and now receiving treatment, has always acted with great honesty and courage. She had contested as an independent in the last Panchayat elections in Thalaiyuthu Panchayat and had won by a margin of 700 votes. In the last five years, she has actively taken up several schemes for the development of Thalaiyuthu panchayat. It is notable that she received the Sarojini Naidu award for 2009 from the hands of the Indian President Pratibha Patil for best implementation (among panchayats in the district) of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Many people of other castes praise her for this. Her remarkable courage and honesty and her astonishing ability and skill in administration are worthy of praise. 2. Her honest and efficient functioning as panchayat president angered some ward members belonging to other castes. They had continually objected to her methods of functioning which had ensured that they could not take bribes from the people, or 'earn' money in other ways. Their jealousy of a woman from the most oppressed Arunthathiyar community administering with such skill and their dominant caste arrogance found expression occasionally. -

Now people are going away from the birth based caste system. The only place where people still feel strong about Caste system are marriage and elections. Now in the rural areas there are teaches who are from backward castes. Now slowly in Hindu system caste system is becoming irrelevant.
In Sanatan Dharma caste system was never created. There is no mention of caste system in Vedas. It was "Shurti or "code" where caste systems are defined and that was also not defined on the basis of birth. These 'Shurti" defined caste system for managing the work in better manner. Caste was on the basis of work not birth.

Stalin K.’s award-winning feature-length documentary is perhaps the most comprehensive look at untouchability ever undertaken on film. The powerful stories and shocking visuals in this film makes it impossible for anyone to deny that Untouchability is still practiced in India today. Director Stalin K. and his team spent four years traveling the length and breadth of India to bear witness to the continued exclusion and segregation of those considered as 'Untouchables' .
The film introduces leading Benares scholars who interpret Hindu scriptures to mean that Dalits 'have no right' to education, and Rajput farmers who proudly proclaim that the police must seek their permission before pursuing cases of atrocities on Dalits. The film captures many 'firsts-on-film, ' such as Dalits being forced to dismount from their cycles and remove their shoes when in the upper caste part of the village.
It exposes the continuation of caste practices and Untouchability in Sikhism, Christianity and Islam, amongst the Communists in Kerala and within some of India's most revered academic and professional institutions.
In an age where the media projects only one image of a 'rising' or 'poised' India, this film reminds us how far the country is from being an equal society. Traveling through eight states and four religions, this film is perhaps the deepest exploration of caste oppression ever undertaken on film.
Stalin K is a human rights activist and award-winning documentary filmmaker and the director of Video Volunteers, the Co-Founder of DRISHTI- Media, Arts and Human Rights and the President of the Community Radio Forum-India. He is a renowned public speaker and has lectured or taught at over 50 institutions ranging from the National Institute of Design and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in India, to New York University and Stanford and Berkeley in the US.
INDIA UNTOUCHED is Stalin's second film on the issue of caste -- his earlier film 'Lesser Humans', on manual scavenging, won the Silver Conch at the Mumbai International Film Festival and the Excellence Award at Earth Vision Film Festival, Tokyo, and helped to bring international attention to the issue of caste. She had contested as an independent in the last Panchayat elections in Thalaiyuthu Panchayat and had won by a margin of 700 votes. In the last five years, she has actively taken up several schemes for the development of Thalaiyuthu panchayat. It is notable that she received the Sarojini Naidu award for 2009 from the hands of the Indian President Pratibha Patil for best implementation (among panchayats in the district) of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Many people of other castes praise her for this. Her remarkable courage and honesty and her astonishing ability and skill in administration are worthy of praise.
2. Her honest and efficient functioning as panchayat president angered some ward members belonging to other castes. They had continually objected to her methods of functioning which had ensured that they could not take bribes from the people, or 'earn' money in other ways. Their jealousy of a woman from the most oppressed Arunthathiyar community administering with such skill and their dominant caste arrogance found expression occasionally.
