Gurkha Rifles (or Assam Rifles?) march at India's Republic Day parade, 2016.
Marching contingent of Assam Rifles at Rajpath. The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of India.
The Assam Rifles raised as Cachar Levy in 1835 is the oldest Central Para Military Force in India. The Force was raised mainly to guard the alluvial plains of Assam from the wild and unruly tribes inhabiting the surrounding hill tracts. This was the earliest embodied unit of what eventually developed into the Assam Rifles. Gradually more such units were raised and employed for establishing posts in the interior and thus acted as the strong arm of the civil administration in extending their authority into these remote inaccessible areas. They also helped in opening up these remote areas and all development activities earning many accolades from the administration. The Assam Rifles contribution towards assimilation of the people of the North-East into the national mainstream is truly monumental. Their long association with the region reflects in the force being fondly called "The Sentinels of the North-East" and "Friends of the Hill People". As on today, the Force has 46 battalions and has a dual role of maintaining internal security in the North-Eastern region and guarding the Indo-Myanmar Border. Variously designated and reorganised from time to time, as the Assam Frontier Police (1883), the Assam Military Police (1891) and Eastern Bengal and Assam Military Police (1913), it came to be known by its present name of the Assam Rifles, in 1917 in recognition of its contribution to the war effort during World War I. During its long history, the Assam Rifles has earned many laurels both in aid to the civil administration as also fighting alongside the Army. The Force has been officered by Army Officers since 1884 and is today, on a per capita basis perhaps the highest decorated security force in the country.
Republic day in India is celebrated every year with great honour on 26th of January to honour the Constitution of India as it came into force on the same day in the year 1950. It had replaced the Government of India Act, 1935 into the governing document of the India. At this day, a national holiday is declared by the Indian Government. The new Indian constitution was sketched and approved by the Indian Constituent Assembly and decided to celebrate it on 26th of January every year as India became a republic country.
Events and celebrations are organized with great effort by the Government of India already to celebrate the Republic Day in the Capital. A huge and grand military parade is held in the New Delhi at Rajpath as well as the state capitals. Participants from the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy and traditional dance group takes part in the parades.
Parade held in the New Delhi starts especially when prime minister of the India offer garland at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate. It is done to commemorate all the sacrifices of the Indian army soldiers while saving their country. The military salute is taken by the President of India during the parade in the Capital whereas military salute is taken by the state governors in the state capitals. At this special day, a foreign head of the state become chief guest of the president.

The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of India. The unit can trace its lineage back to a paramilitary police force that was formed under the British in 1835 called Cachar Levy. Republic Day: It was on 26th January, 1950 that the Indian Constitution came into effect, making India a Republic. Ever since, India celebrates 26th January as its Republic Day. The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November, 1949 and when it came into force on 26 January, it replaced the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.
26 January was chosen as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status offered by the British Regime.
This auspicious day is commemorated as one of the three national holidays in India- the other two being Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. There are grand Republic Day celebrations across India but the one, which is the most popular, and the most anticipated is that along the Raj Path in Delhi. The celebrations are held in the form of ceremonious parades of various wings of the Indian armed, paramilitary and central police forces followed by tableaux of the states of India and the various ministries of the Indian Government, showcasing India’s military might and socio-cultural diversity and richness.
Much like Independence Day celebrations, the Republic Day celebrations at Raj Path are also graced by a political leader of a foreign country. The French President Francois Hollande graced the 67th Republic Day celebrations in 2016 at Raj Path as Chief Guest.
The 67th Republic Day also saw many firsts, some being, marching of a French army band as part of the parade, marching of an Indian army dog squad and absence of the iconic camel mounted BSF contingent.

In times of war they can also be used as a combat force to secure rear areas if needed. Since 2002 it has been guarding the India-Myanmar border as per the government policy "one border one force".

The British named the island Peacock Island for its shape.

This video is about Kaziranga National Park India, which is the last bastion of the One Horned Rhino. Kaziranga is 4 hours by road from Guwahati, which is the nearest major airport. The park itself is extremely pretty with rolling acres of tall elephant grass all around and the distant Karbi Anglong Hills making bumps on the horizon. As in any National Park in India, this place accommodates a wide variety of species. The forest guide who accompanied our group knew most of them and was quite knowledgeable.
However, the infrastructure around the park itself is poorly developed. If Assam Government expects to earn more of the family vacation dollar here, they need to create many more options for stay, travel, food, recreation and lasso in the dishonest travel agent community. Right now it's all very rudimentary, even if you are willing to pay the top dollar. Until the scene changes, people will have to rough it out, as we literally had to during our trip.
There are many videos similar to this one on youtube which will hopefully encourage more visitors to Assam and also to other states in North East of India (together called 7 Sisters states). With more visitors voicing concern, Also some practical advice at the end of the video, and a word of caution about our greedy travel agent Anjaana Safar.

Umananda Island In Brahmaputra River,Assam.....Traveling By Boat.
Umananda Island (from Assamese Uma, another name for the Hindu goddess Parvati, the wife of Shiva; and ananda, "happiness") is the smallest river island in the midst of river Brahmaputra flowing through the city of Guwahati in Assam, a state in northeast India. The British named the island Peacock Island for its shape.
According to Hindu mythology, Shiva created the island his wife Parvati's happiness and pleasure. Shiva is said to have resided here in the form of Bhayananda. According to a myth in Kalika Purana, Shiva burnt Kamadeva with his third eye on Umananda when he tried to interrupt Shiva's deep meditation, hence its alternative name Bhasmachal.
In 1694, the Ahom king Supaatphaa ordered his minister Gargaya Handique Phukan to build a Hindu temple, called Umananda Temple. In 1897, an earthquake damaged the temple heavily, but was later repaired by a local merchant. The temple displays mixture of both Hindu Vaishnavism and Shaivism. There are Assamese craftings of Ganesha, Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, and other Hindu deities. During the repairing work of the temple some new Vaishnavi scripts were written on the walls. Craftsmen also carved figures out of rock on the island.

The Enigma of ASSAM is mired with mysticism, tantrik cults, teotonic disturbances, Tea Estates, turbulent Brahmaputra, wild life sanctuaries, silk weaving, bamboo crafts, and Bodo agitation.
The etymology of Assam is subject to many theories and conjectures. The reliable version is that of Asama in the sense of being Peerless or Unrivalled. The Ahoms called themselves Tai, which meant glorious in Chinese or Land of the free. There seems to be a Siamese connection in the form of migration. We can reasonably assume that Ahoms were migrants from Thailand. Assam was also known during the Mahabharat times as Pragyjyothisa in Mahabharat and Kamrupa in the past.

To The Point - Karan Thapar - To The Point: Operation 'All Out' in Assam
Security forces have launched a massive operation to eradicate terrorism from the Assam region. A joint operation by the Assam Rifles, central security forces, state police and the Indian army is on to hunt down the Bodo terrorists, who massacred over 70 people in a series of terror strikes in the state. Is this is a milestone in operations against terrorism in the North East?

Manipur would really have been the Jewell in the crown of tourist map of India…but the terror of underground groups marred its opportunities. Such a beautiful state but almost no tourist infrastructure. Moreover the camps of Assam rifles and board of anti-extortion helpline welcomes you in the hills of this state. There are so many attractions in Manipur which makes this tiny hilly state culturally distinguished and socially interesting. Lusei, Rangkhawl, Sakachep, Tedim/Tiddim Chin, Komrem, Paite, Vaiphei, Thado-Kuki, Simte, Hmar, Lai, Maring, and Mara.
The announcer speaks in what is now known as the "Mizo Language" which was originally known as the Hualngo/Lusei or Duhlian dialect - a dialect of some 70 Chin/Kuki/Zo tribes and sub-tribes who are living in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura states in India, and Chin and Rakhine states inside Burma, and also in their neighbouring regions such as Sagaing, Bago, Irrawaddy and Magwe Divisions. It's spoken and well-undertood by more than 60 percent of an estimated combinded population of 2.5 million Chin/Kuki/Zo people.
I am deeply thankful to Pu Lalbuta and the Daifim Pictures for their meterials from which I've made this video. Thangzadal. Hamburg, Germany. May 2013.

The Battle of the Tennis Court was part of the Battle of Kohima in North East India from April 4 – June 22, 1944. The Second World War Japanese advance into India was halted at Kohima in April 1944 and Garrison Hill, on a long wooded ridge on a high ridge west of the village, was the scene of perhaps the most bitter fighting of the whole Burma campaign when a small Commonwealth force held out against repeated attacks by a Japanese Division. The fiercest hand-to-hand fighting took place in the garden of the Deputy Commissioner's bungalow, around the Tennis Court.
Kohima Ridge was about a mile long and about 400 yards wide, with a series of hills and gullies that ran alongside the road from Imphal to Dimapur. The steep slopes along the road made the ridge a formidable target for attackers, but it was a narrow space from which to repel an enemy attacking in strength.[2] By April 6 the British, Nepalese and Indian soldiers of Kohima Garrison had been surrounded on the Kohima ridge.[3] As the siege began the Kohima Ridge was defended to the south (facing Imphal) by the 1st Assam Regiment on Jail Hill. The centre ground of the ridge was mainly defended by 4th Royal West Kents. The North West of the Ridge, known as Hospital Spur, was defended by the 3rd Assam Rifles who were facing the road to Dimapur. The North East of the Ridge on a sharp corner in the road was where the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Charles Pawsey's Bungalow and Tennis Court was situated. This was initially guarded by a composite group of soldiers,[3] thought to be British and Gurkha troops from the local Reinforcement Depot.[4]
The Japanese launched a series of attacks into the north-east region of the defences on April 8, including two attacks on the DC's Bungalow area. The Japanese suffered massive losses, but poured in reinforcements to prepare for another attack. Some Allied soldiers manned a Bren gun to cover the withdrawal from the DC's Bungalow to the other side of the asphalt tennis court 12m higher up the hill. They held on to the last round but were then overrun, bayoneted and shot.[5] At this stage the Battle of the Tennis Court could be said to have begun with the area being rapidly reinforced by A Company of the 4th Royal West Kents.[6]
During April 9 and before dawn on April 10 the Japanese 58 Regiment attacked the Allied defenders of the Tennis Court area almost every 30 minutes.[7] Major Tom Kenyon of A Company of the 4th Royal West Kents commanded the British, Indian and Gurkha defenders who had now dug weapon pits and trenches on the western edge of the tennis court.[8] During April 10 these defences and the overhead cover saved many lives as artillery shells landed on the Allied positions. The forward trenches ran out of ammunition on several occasions but were repeatedly resupplied by Sergeant Williams who was awarded a Military Medal for his bravery.[9]
The decision was made on April 12 to relieve the defenders of the Tennis Court with B Company of the 4th Royal West Kents commanded by Major John Winstanley.[10] During B Company's first night defending the Tennis Court, the Japanese forces attacked silently wearing plimsolls instead of boots. They nearly overran the British forward positions with one of the platoon commanders, Lieutenant Tom Hogg, surviving a bayonet attack before firing all 25 rounds in his rifle killing his assailant.[11]
On April 13, the troops defending near the DC's bungalow and the tennis court came under increasingly heavy artillery and mortar fire, and had to repel frequent infantry assaults. This area was the scene of some of the hardest, closest and grimmest fighting, with grenades being hurled across the tennis court at point-blank range. But on April 14 the Japanese did not launch an attack and on the 15th the British and Indian troops on Kohima ridge heard that the British 2nd Division was attacking along the Dimapur-Kohima road and had broken through Japanese road blocks.
On April 17, the Japanese tried one last time to take the ridge. They successfully captured Field Supply Depot (FSD) Hill and Kuki Piquet. But on the morning of April 18 British artillery opened up from the west against the Japanese positions, which stopped the Japanese attacks. Elements of the British 2nd Division, 161st Brigade and tanks from XXXIII Corps pushed into the area north-west of Garrison Hill and forced the Japanese from their positions. The road between Dimapur and Kohima had been opened, and the siege was lifted.

Actor Ojas Suniti Vinay infuses fire in her performance depicting the will of Irom Sharmila and the alienation of the Northeast from the rest of India. This is a recording of her one act play performance titled 'Le Mashale' in Mumbai, on Dec 10, 2010 on World Human Rights Day.
Below is a text on her work written by Jyoti Punwani for Mumbai Mirror - http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/82/201012122010121203045163590313ff/The-torchbearer.html
Nasal drip in place, she narrated what it means to be a Manipuri woman living under the rule of a law peculiar to Manipur - and all seven sisters of Northeast India.
And Kashmir. "Four million people live under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA),'' points out Ojas Suniti Vijay, the 25-year-old who plays Sharmila in the play Le Mashale (bearing torches). "If you want the world to acknowledge you as the world's largest democracy, this law has to be repealed.''
In the solo performance, Ojas/ Sharmila spells out the army's point-of-view of Manipuri women: "Just a piece of flesh with two round breasts and a vagina.'' She repeats this sentence as she depicts the rape and mutilation of Manorama Devi, who was dragged from her home by soldiers of the Assam Rifles in 2004. She was later found dead, shot through her vagina.
The act provoked a protest unique in India - Manipuri mothers stood naked in front of the gate of the Assam Rifles Battalion in Imphal, with a banner stating, 'Indian army rape us.' This picture is shown through the enactment of Le Mashale. "The nakedness of the women showed the army as being completely naked,'' says Ojas.
There are other visuals - grabs from the Internet - that flash across the screen towards the end of this dance-drama: soldiers forcing Manipuri boys to beat each other with lathis and turn cartwheels on the road.
But these would remain fleeting images were they not matched by the intensity of Ojas/Sharmila's frustration, anger, and sense of nostalgia for a Manipur where grandmothers related stories of how Manipur's seven suns were vanquished so that the people could finally get darkness and sleep and love. But the night so longed-for has turned out to be endless after the AFSPA was imposed on Manipur in 1958.
Ojas, a Maharashtrian, says, "It's important that someone from mainland India is doing this play (written by Malayalam writer Civic Chandran)." A Pune girl born to activist parents (members of the National Alliance of People's Movements), who named her as they named themselves - with the mother's and father's name substituting for the surname, told her to take a year off after her graduation to find out what she wanted to do.
Ojas travelled to Uttarakhand and Scotland, and came back to her base to do a post-graduation in bio-diversity, a course in which you spend more time outside the classroom than inside. She taught it for one semester, but found she missed theatre too much.
The subject never left her though, through the many journeys across the country. "On every street, ever journey, you meet people with different body languages.
There are so many stories waiting to be told, and hardly a fraction have been depicted. That's why I don't agree with those who say theatre is dead. It's the last thing to die. It's been there since the Mahabharat, when Krishna organised a show for the victorious Pandavas.
The play narrated the events of the war they had just won, and showed them the massacre that had brought them their crown. That's the impact theatre has - it becomes a mirror. Can the role of a mirror ever end?"
Le Mashale holds up a mirror to many things we hold dear. The national anthem, for instance, which has no mention of Manipur, or indeed, of the Northeast. "I grew up like any middle class child, imbibing ideas of the national anthem and rashtrabhasha. But I want my theatre to create a debate, to make people think about nationalism, not merely observe it as a ritual."
Ojas met Sharmila last month when the tenth anniversary of the latter's fast was being observed. That fleeting, silent meeting in which Ojas handed her a candle across a barricade, now lights up her performances.

ZO FEST - 2004
The Motto of the Festival was: "UNAU KAN NI!" ("We're Brothers and Sisters")
The first Zo Fest was celebrated in Churachanpur, Manipur State, India, in 2002. The second one (Zo Fest - 2004) was initiated and organized by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo Students Union) and held at the 7th Assam Rifles Football Ground in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram State, in December 2004. This Video is the 1st of 3 Parts of the Folk Dances of the Chin/Zo People to be put up under my Youtube Account.
FOLK DANCES OF SOME OF THE CHIN/ZO TRIBES TO BE SEEN ON THIS VIDEO
are in the following order: Maring (Manipur State, India), Rangkhawl (Assam State, India), Korem (Manipur), Mara (Mizoram & Chin State), Falam (Chin State), Mizo (Chin & Mizoram States), Cho (Chin State), 2 Sizang/Siyin dances (Chin State) - the first dance - a male single dance - is shared by a number of other tribes as well: 2 Tedim dances (Chin State), and Hmar (Mizoram). Although a few dances have been modified for stage show, they all still retain their originality.
The announcer speaks in what is now known as the "Mizo Language" which was originally known as the Hualngo/Lusei or Duhlian dialect. It's spoken and well- understood by about 60 percent of an estimated combined population of 2.5 million of the Chin/Kuki/Zo people.
PERCENTAGE OF LEXICOSTATISTICS SIMILARITY BETWEEN CHIN/ZO TRIBES
71.8 % = (Mizo, Falam, Taisun, Haka, Thantlang, Khualsim)
63 % = (Thado-Kuki, Zou, Siyin/Sizang, Tedim, Bualkhua, Zanniat, Mizo, Falam, Taisun, Haka, Thantlang, Khualsim)
44. 9 % = (Thado-Kuki, Zou, Siyin/Sizang, Tedim, Bualkhua, Zanniat, Mizo, Falam, Taisun, Haka, Thantlang, Khualsim, Senthang, Asho, Matu)
36.1 % = (Thado-Kuki, Zou, Siyin/Sizang, Tedim, Bualkhua, Zanniat, Mizo, Falam, Taisun, Haka, Thantlang, Khualsim, Senthang, Asho, Matu, Kaang, Dai, Khami/Khumi, Lautu-Haring, Lakher/Mara, M'ro/Mru)
Source: A PHONOLOGICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF PROTO CHIN.(Khoi Lam Thang's Thesis for Master of Arts in Linguistics. Payap University, Chiangmai, Thailand. 2001)
Note. Nearly all the tribes listed here - except the Mizo - are from inside Burma.
Special Note: I am deeply thankful to the Daifim Pictures for their materials. Thangzadal.

"Crime Patrol coming back in its 4th season attempts to bring stories of crime happening all around the country. Crimes that tell us, we need to be careful, we need to be watchful. Crimes that tell us lives could have been saved.Every crime we hear of, either warns us to be careful or scares us, it could happen to us. Every crime ignites a feeling, “It should not have happened”.Would knowing the “Why” behind a crime, help in stopping a crime from happening?“I don’t like the way he looks at me”, “I don’t like the way he/she is behaving”, “I think he/she is out of his/her mind”, “I think he/she has gone crazy”. That gaze, that quirky smile, that persistent stare which unnerves. It is difficult to understand the intentions but the hints are there. In a house a husband and wife argue, fight. A vessel comes flying, a glass breaks. Husband is angry and the wife is upset. That hatred, that ego. The distance that keeps growing. It is difficult to comprehend the damage, but the cracks are there.Feelings… expressions. Misunderstood, unresolved callings of the heart. The cracks are there. Too wide to be missed. Yet when the heart takes over the mind, the outcome is a mindless tragedy.Crime Patrol- Dastak will attempt to look at the signs, the signals that are always there before these mindless crimes are committed. Instincts/Feelings/Signals that so often tell us that not everything is normal. May be, that signal/feeling/instinct is just not enough to believe it could result in a crime. Unfortunately after the crime is committed, those same signals come haunting.
