Kwon So-a has more.
Asia's biggest sporting event, the Asian Games finally get started on Friday in Korea's northwestern port city of Incheon.
The history of the Asian Games dates back to 1951, when it was first hosted in New Delhi.
Thirty-five years later, the event came to South Korea for the first time... when it was hosted by Seoul,... followed by Busan in 2002.
Incheon now becomes the third Korean city to have the honors.
South Korea first participated in the Asian Games in 1954 in Manila, when it placed third in the overall medal count, and has sent athletes to every event since.
In 1970 in Bangkok, Korean swimmer Cho Oh-ryun began his rise to legendary status, winning gold in the 400- and 15-hundred-meter freestyles.
At the eighth games in Bangkok, Korea's won gold in archery, while came out on top in wrestling.
In 1981, Korea started preparing to host the 10th Asian Games in Seoul.
Stadiums, accommodations and new road were built leading up to the event in 1986.
"To promise common prosperity and friendship among 3 billion Asians, we open this celebration, pledging for a continuously progressing Asia."
Team Korea thrived that year, breaking various world records and finishing second overall.
Korea showed its superiority in male and female hockey, defeated China in table tennis, and swept up medals in all twelve weight classes of boxing.
"The torch has gone out. We made it."
Korea has grown into a powerful sports nation throughout the years, and aims to prove it once again at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games,... where the goal is to win at least 90 gold medals.

It is difficult to consider that Games are just for Sports. Since very early days Games have been occasion to uplift National prestige and power. But what is doubtful is whether these Games will at all raise nation's prestige? The problem is Corruption. None of these politicians or others in the organizing Committee are there for love of Sports but to make money. It is indeed sad that those who hold power in this country have closed their eyes to this blasphemy.
Let us wish best for India and her prestige in these games and hope those who attempted to tarnish her image are in the best place they should be -- JAIL!

England's Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant win Squash Men's Doubles during Commonwealth games Delhi 2010.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XIX Commonwealth Games, were held in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010. A total of 6,081 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events, making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date. It was also the largest international multi-sport event to be staged in Delhi and India, eclipsing the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main stadium of the event. It was the first time that the Commonwealth Games were held in India and the second time it was held in Asia after Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1998. This also marked the first time a Commonwealth Republic hosted the games. The official mascot of the Games was Shera and the official song of the Games, "Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto", was composed by celebrated Indian musician A.R. Rahman.
Preparation for the Games received widespread international media attention, with criticism being levelled against the organisers for the slow pace of work, as well as issues related to security and hygiene. However, all member nations of the Commonwealth of Nations participated in the event, except Fiji, which is suspended from the Commonwealth, and Tokelau, which didn't send a team, in spite of threats of boycotts and athlete withdrawals. The internationally acclaimed opening ceremony improved the image of the Games, and dispelled negative notions surrounding them, with many observers remarking that they began on an apprehensive note, but were an exceptional experience with a largely positive ending. The President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, said that India had made a good foundation for a future Olympics bid, which was reiterated by the Australian Ministry of Sports. Commonwealth games Federation chief Mike Fennell stated that "Delhi delivered a fantastic Games". Some observers accused sections of the media of bias, unfair expectations, and negative reporting.
The final medal tally was led by Australia. The host nation India achieved its best performance ever at the Games, finishing second overall.

Josiah NG wins gold medal Men's Keirin during Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010. Cycling is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It has been a Commonwealth Games sport since the second edition of the event's precursor, the 1934 British Empire Games. It is an optional sport and may, or may not, be included in the sporting programme of each edition of the Games.

Jarrod Bannister wins Mens' Javelin throw final at Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010.
The host nation India achieved its best performance ever at the Games, finishing second overall.

wn.com/Women's 48Kg Weightlifting At Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010
Women participate in 48kg Weightlifting event during Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010.
Weightlifting was included in the Commonwealth Games Programme in 1990 Auckland Games. Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 had 8 weight categories for Men and 7 weight categories for women at the J.N. Sports Complex.
