The Washington Post Company is an American mass media company, best known for owning the newspaper for which it is named, The Washington Post. The company also owns Kaplan, Inc., a leading international provider of educational and career services for individuals, schools, and businesses. In addition, the company owns The Slate Group, Express, El Tiempo Latino, The Gazette and Southern Maryland newspapers, The Herald (Everett, WA), Post-Newsweek Stations (Detroit, Houston, Miami, Orlando, San Antonio and Jacksonville), Cable ONE—a cable TV and Internet service provider with subscribers in midwestern, western, and southern states—and Avenue100 Media Solutions, an online lead generation provider. Washington Post Co. (NYSE:WPO) is seeking a buyer to purchase Newsweek magazine after several attempts to cut circulation, raise cover prices, end subscription renewal discounts, and refocus the current affairs publication.
Washington Post Co. called investment bank Allen & Co. Wednesday to find a potential buyer.
"Despite heroic efforts on the part of Newsweek's management and staff, we expect it to still lost money in 2010," said company chairman Donald Graham. "Newsweek is a lively, important magazine and website and in the current climate, it might be a better fit elsewhere."
Washington Post Co's magazine division reported a $29.3 million operating loss in 2009 and a $16.1 million loss the year prior.
Newsweek magazine was founded in 1933 and owned by Washington Post Co. since 1961.
Shares of Washington Post Co. are trading down 0.54% at $499.99 on volume of 65,110, versus the average volume of 47,786.

"It’s not news that the Washington Post’s editorial board has been lobbying against Sen. Bernie Sanders since the beginning of his improbable presidential campaign. Sometimes this editorial ethos seems to extend to other parts of the paper, as it did in March, when thePost managed to run 16 negative stories about Sanders in 16 hours (FAIR.org, 3/8/16).
While the Post has published the occasional pro-Sanders piece, the Jeff Bezos–owned publication was back at it yesterday when it pounced on a tax study by the Urban Institute, running four pieces (two by Post writers, one by the editorial board and one by the AP) in one afternoon:

At the Daily News at every major news outlet in America, we have dedicated staff members who obsess over the photos, headlines, and social media descriptions of each story. It's just where we are right now.
That's why what the Washington Post did this week is pretty damn disgusting.
In an article entitled "The Bernie Bros are out in full force harassing female reporters," the photo used to promote it was both jarring and effective. A woman is surrounded by a swarm of angry men. She looks defeated and maybe even afraid. She appears to have egg dripping from her face and hair.
For the past few days reporters from the Washington Post and prominent supporters of Hillary Clinton have shared the article, anchored by this alarming photo, all over Twitter and Facebook.
So that woman must be a journalist and the people harassing her "in full force" must be "Bernie Bros" right?
Wrong.
Six days ago that woman's photo was everywhere. She was a Donald Trump supporter at a rally in San Jose.”*

Edison Military Band plays "Washington Post" on Edison Gold Moulded Record 97 (circa 1904).
During much of his adult life, John Philip Sousa was among the most important figures in American music. He led an incredibly popular band that inspired young people throughout America to take up musical instruments.
At the turn of the twentieth century, he may have been the world's most famous living composer. As the creator of 136 marches, many of them memorable, he earned the nickname "The March King." Some of his non-march compositions enjoyed success, including songs and operettas. Among the latter, El Capitan (1896) was especially popular.
He was the author of a novel, The Fifth String (Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1902), and an autobiography, Marching Along (Hale, Cushman & Flint, 1928).
He was born on November 6, 1854, in Washington, DC, to Antonio and Elizabeth Sousa. His mother lived long enough to see her son achieve great fame, dring in her Washington, DC, home on August 23, 1908. He played violin in a number of orchestras prior to assuming, at age 26, the post of U. S. Marine Band director in 1880, a position he held until 1892.
The first recordings associated with Sousa were made by the U. S. Marine Band in 1890. It was not the full band since recording technology at the time could accommodate little more than a dozen players. It recorded at least 229 titles for Columbia by the summer of 1892.
The conductor left the band on August 1, 1892. He had started forming his own band, which by July had been engaged for the October dedication of Chicago's Columbian Exposition. Patrick Gilmore died on September 24, which created a rare opportunity to hire great musicians. This death also left a void that Sousa could fill. Gilmore's Band had been the nation's most popular band. Another important bandleader, Carlo Alberto Cappa, died in early 1893. Sousa was clearly the most important figure in the band world.
The new band was at first called Sousa's New Marine Band but this name was short-lived due to objections by the U. S. Marine Band. It was renamed Sousa's Grand Concert Band. Records identify the ensemble simply as Sousa's Band.
Sousa recruited more than a dozen musicians, including Herbert L. Clarke, from Gilmore's Band after the bandmaster's death. This was bold. D. W. Reeves, the new leader of Gilmore's Band, denounced the New Marine Band in the Musical Courier of March 15, 1893. Such publicity did not hurt Sousa, who had secured important engagements immediately.
It is understandable if Sousa in the 1890s viewed records with such contempt that he declined to conduct during sessions. Recording and playback technologies were decidedly crude throughout that decade. Brown wax cylinders and Berliner discs hardly did justice to Sousa's Band, whose concerts thrilled audiences. By 1906, technology had advanced significantly, but records still could not deliver the rich sounds of live performances (companies naturally stressed that record buyers could hear Sousa's Band in their homes at any time, which is a worthwhile point never addressed by Sousa).
Sousa mainly worried that mechanical music--records and player pianos--threatened the livelihood of musicians, which was a genuine problem, but that he openly criticized recorded music after taking so much money from various record companies is remarkable. No other famous artist had been so closely linked to the industry for so many years, and he continued his association with companies, the name Sousa's Band being put on many records even after he had coined the phrase "canned music"!
In any case, Sousa did not conduct during a recording session until December 21, 1917, and thereafter attended only three others--on September 6, 1918; March 29, 1923; and September 4, 1926 (during this one session of the electric era, he led the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company Band).
Sousa's attack on mechanical music in Appleton's Magazine alarmed some in the record industry but companies that induced Sousa to sign a contract--Edison's company and later Victor--took advantage of it in advertising.
Sousa remained active as leader of Sousa's Band until his last year though he led his band most often on radio after the stock market crash of 1929, his touring days over. He even completed his 350th composition at age 77 in late 1931.
He died on March 6, 1932, in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Bezos, one of the world's wealthiest men, now controls one of the most powerful newspapers in the country. Some critics of the sale have cited Bezos' close ties to the U.S. government. In 2010, Amazon pulled the plug on hosting the WikiLeaks website under heavy political pressure. Earlier this year, Amazon inked a $600 million cloud computing deal with the CIA. Independent booksellers and publishers have also long complained about Amazon's business practices.
