Over 200 delegates from 57 universities made the journey to Plymouth University for the third annual British Conference of Undergraduate Research to see posters and presentations from up and coming undergraduate researchers. As ever, the quality of the work was outstanding. Many congratulations to everyone who took part!
The British Conference of Undergraduate Research promotes undergraduate research in all disciplines. The Conference meets annually every Spring in a different British university. Undergraduates of all levels are invited to submit papers, posters, workshops and performances to the Conference. Abstracts are peer-reviewed and those accepted will be invited to attend the conference. Conference fees are usually paid by the student's own university. BCUR also accepts submissions from students outside of the UK.
BCUR was founded in 2010 and held its first conference in 2011 at the University of Central Lancashire. The conference doubled in size for the second conference, held in 2012 at the University of Warwick. The 2013 Plymouth conference was bigger still!
BCUR14 will be at the University of Nottingham, 14th-15th April 2014. Call for papers will be out shortly.

Dr Sanjay Sinha, BHF Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Dr Johannes Bargehr, BHF-Funded PhD student are working on a ‘heart muscle patch’, which, when transplanted on a heart with impaired function, could help repair the damaged heart muscle.
“We have the great opportunity to make a big difference; a real difference to heart disease” says Dr Sanjay Sinha.
Will Bernard’s (BHF-Funded PhD student) research focuses on the mechanism in which cells within blood vessel cells communicate with each other and how this goes wrong in cardiovascular disease.
“This money has allowed us to do a wealth of research, that’s starting to really underpin some of the genetic causes, and the developmental causes, of cardiovascular disease.
Dr Alex Granata’s (BHF-Funded Post-Doc) breakthrough research into the causes of Marfan Syndrome is “giving the opportunity to do a clinical trial in a dish”.

Improvements in research have seen Cambridge University and Imperial College London surpass Harvard University in the latest authoritative annual ranking of the world's top universities, published on Tuesday, with four British institutions in the top six. The QS ranking of world universities, regarded as the most rigorous of its type, places Imperial and Cambridge as second equal, behind only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the international stage in 2014, thanks to a year of impressive citations measured by QS's survey of academic output.

UCLan has hosted the UK's first ever undergraduate research conference. Held at the University's Preston Campus between the 19 and 20 April, the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) brought together over 150 students from 40 universities from across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Commenting on the future of undergraduate research, Professor Stuart Hampton-Reeves added: "This conference marks the start of an exciting time for undergraduate research. It has played an increasingly significant role in American Higher Education for 25 years, and we really think it can play a fundamental role here in the UK contributing to the future development of our students."

Universities in the United Kingdom
Universities in the United Kingdom have generally been instituted by Royal Charter, Papal Bull, Act of Parliament or an instrument of government under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. For new public universities, approval is required from the Privy Council, while private universities may be granted the right to use the title by Companies House. The exact criteria for University title vary between the four countries of the United Kingdom. Degree awarding powers, which are three-tiered and allow the granting of foundation degrees, taught degrees, and research degree, are granted by the Privy Council on the advice of the Quality Assurance Agency.
Institutions that hold degree awarding powers are termed Recognised Bodies, this list includes universities, university colleges, colleges of the University of London, higher education colleges, and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Listed Bodies offer courses leading to degrees of a Recognised Body, this includes institutions whose degrees are validated by a recognised body, and the colleges of the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Durham. Undergraduate applications to almost all UK universities are managed by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS)

British Council of Undergraduate Research Conference 2011
UCLan has hosted the UK's first ever undergraduate research conference. Held at the University's Preston Campus between the 19 and 20 April, the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) brought together over 150 students from 40 universities from across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Commenting on the future of undergraduate research, Professor Stuart Hampton-Reeves added: "This conference marks the start of an exciting time for undergraduate research. It has played an increasingly significant role in American Higher Education for 25 years, and we really think it can play a fundamental role here in the UK contributing to the future development of our students." Over 200 delegates from 57 universities made the journey to Plymouth University for the third annual British Conference of Undergraduate Research to see posters and presentations from up and coming undergraduate researchers. As ever, the quality of the work was outstanding. Many congratulations to everyone who took part!
The British Conference of Undergraduate Research promotes undergraduate research in all disciplines. The Conference meets annually every Spring in a different British university. Undergraduates of all levels are invited to submit papers, posters, workshops and performances to the Conference. Abstracts are peer-reviewed and those accepted will be invited to attend the conference. Conference fees are usually paid by the student's own university. BCUR also accepts submissions from students outside of the UK.
BCUR was founded in 2010 and held its first conference in 2011 at the University of Central Lancashire. The conference doubled in size for the second conference, held in 2012 at the University of Warwick. The 2013 Plymouth conference was bigger still!
BCUR14 will be at the University of Nottingham, 14th-15th April 2014. Call for papers will be out shortly.

Dr Sanjay Sinha, BHF Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Dr Johannes Bargehr, BHF-Funded PhD student are working on a ‘heart muscle patch’, which, when transplanted on a heart with impaired function, could help repair the damaged heart muscle.
“We have the great opportunity to make a big difference; a real difference to heart disease” says Dr Sanjay Sinha.
Will Bernard’s (BHF-Funded PhD student) research focuses on the mechanism in which cells within blood vessel cells communicate with each other and how this goes wrong in cardiovascular disease.
“This money has allowed us to do a wealth of research, that’s starting to really underpin some of the genetic causes, and the developmental causes, of cardiovascular disease.

Allen Ginsberg once declared that "the best teaching is done in bed," but most university administrators would presumably disagree. Many universities prohibit romantic relationships between faculty members and students, and professors who transgress are usually out of a job. In Romance in the Ivory Tower, Paul Abramson takes aim at university policies that forbid relationships between faculty members and students. He argues provocatively that the issue of faculty-student romances transcends the seemingly trivial matter of who sleeps with whom and engages our fundamental constitutional rights. By what authority, Abramson asks, did the university become the arbiter of romantic etiquette among consenting adults? Do we, as consenting adults, have a constitutional right to make intimate choices as long as they do not cause harm? Abramson contends that we do, and bases this claim on two arguments. He suggests that the Ninth Amendment (which states that the Constitution's enumeration of certain rights should not be construed to deny others) protects the "right to romance." And, more provocatively, he argues that the "right to romance" is a fundamental right of conscienceas are freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Campus romances happen. The important question is not whether they should be encouraged or prohibited but whether the choice to engage in such a relationship should be protected or precluded. Abramson argues ringingly that our freedom to make choicesto worship, make a political speech, or fall in loveis fundamental. Rules forbidding faculty-student romances are not only unconstitutional but set dangerous precedents for further intrusion into rights of privacy and conscience.

Universities can teach and demonstrate environmental principles and stewardship by taking action to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of their own activities. Greening the Ivory Tower, a motivational and how-to guide for staff, faculty, and students, offers detailed "greening" strategies for those who may have little experience with institutional change or with the latest environmentally friendly technologies.the author was project manager of Tufts Clean!, a program whose mission was to reduce Tufts University's environmental impact. After analyzing the campus's overall environmental impact (each year the main campus serves 5 million meals; makes 14 million photocopies; uses 65 tons of paper towels, 110 million gallons of water, and 23 million kwh of electricity; and generates over 2,000 tons of solid waste), the team decided to focus on food waste, transportation, energy efficiency, and procurement practices. An essential discovery was that to change practices requires the personal commitment and direct involvement of those who have the responsibility for operating the institution on a daily basis. Although the Tufts experience forms the basis for many of the proposals in the book, the story goes well beyond Tufts; the author includes examples of successful practices from many other institutions.

Transforming the Ivory Tower builds on the rich legacy of historical struggles to open universities to dissenting voices and oppressed groups. Each chapter is guided by a commitment to praxisthe idea that theoretical understandings of inequality must be applied to concrete strategies for change.the common misconception that racism, sexism, and homophobia no longer plague university life heightens the difficulty to dismantle the interlocking forms of oppression that undergird the ivory tower.
