Join me for a winter ascent of Mt Washington, followed by some snowy hammock camping. GPS data at http://www.sintax77.com .
For this trip, I'll be heading up to the White Mountains for one more winter backpacking trip before the season ends. This will
also be my first attempt to climb Mt Washington in winter. Okay, climb may be a bit overzealous of a term, but it will be pretty
aggressive compared to my other winter hikes. Which brings up an important topic - additional gear needed. I'll get to that a
little later, but first lets take a look at where exactly I started off from and the general route I took. Full GPS track data

Parking Location: Pinkham Notch Visitor Center near Jackson, New Hampshire in the White Mountains.
List of Trails Used, in Order:
Start at Tuckerman Ravine Trailhead (located right behind visitor center)
Follow the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Stop at the Fire Road Junction. Do not continue up Tuckerman Ravine! You should see a sign stating that it is closed in winter due to avalanche danger.
Take Huntington Ravine Fire Road towards Harvard Cabin.
Arrive at Harvard Cabin to setup camp and get organized.
Once setup and geared appropriately, backtrack a bit down the Fire Road.
Before getting back to the junction, take the Lion's Head Winter Route on your right.
Follow Lion's Head Winter Route. This is a very steep trail opened as a safer alternative to Tuckerman Ravine Trail during avalanche season. Be prepared to use both
hands as well as your ice axe for support. While I did not carry one, a rope could be quite useful and convenient on the way back down.
Rejoin the Tuckerman Ravine Trail (you're above of the avalanche zone now).
Continue on Tuckerman Ravine Trail, crossing the summer Auto Road and on to the summit.
Follow course in reverse to return to Harvard Cabin to camp for the night.
On day two, hike back out via Huntington Ravine Fire Road and Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Extra Gear used for my Mt Washington Winter Ascent:
There were two pieces of gear that I brought on this trip, that I've never previously felt the need for on other White Mountains winter trips - Crampons and an ice axe.
The ice axe is not to be confused with an ice tool, specialized for actual ice climbing, supported by ropes and typically headed straight up a wall of ice. The ice as,
or mountaineering axe as it's also often called, is longer and straight with a pick for self arresting on one side (this is the primary reason to bring it out on the ice
fields of Mt Washington), and an adze on the other side for digging and chopping tasks. The adze is mostly used for more advanced mountaineering techniques than may be
required on a Mt Washington attempt, but it does come in handy around camp for setting up a home for the night.
The crampons I chose were universal strap-on crampons, so that I could use them with my regular, flexible winter hiking boots, as opposed to the typical Automatic or
semi-auto crampons that require a traditional hard plastic climbing boot, which I do not own.

Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington will house 2,500 rare 18th and 19th century books, including 80 books that were owned by Washington, in addition to 500 letters, ledgers and account books that bear George Washington's writing or signature. Official snowfall records for Washington date back to eighteen eighty-four. By early February, this winter had already broken them with one hundred forty-two centimeters of snow measured.
But the storms that buried the city broke more than seasonal records. Heavy snow and high winds damaged some of Washington's famous cherry trees.
In the spring, crowds expect a beautiful show as the trees blossom along the edge of the Tidal Basin next to the Jefferson Memorial.
Workers picked up broken branches, some as thick as fifteen centimeters. A few trees have lost their canopies.
Peak blooming, when the trees are in full flower, may be delayed a little. But the National Park Service says people can expect the usual show of pink and white flowers. This year's National Cherry Blossom Festival is set for March twenty-seventh through April fourth.
Twelve kinds of cherry trees grow around the Tidal Basin. The first trees were a gift from Japan in nineteen twelve. The Japanese later sent two more gifts of cherry trees.
Cherry trees are valued for their flowers but also for their wood and their fruit. The United States and Turkey are leading producers of cherries, though not all cherry trees produce fruit.
The two major kinds of cherries are sweet and sour. Sour cherries, sometimes called tart cherries, are used in foods and drinks.
The state of Michigan is the nation's top producer of sour cherries. Washington -- not the city, but the state in the Pacific Northwest -- is the top producer of sweet cherries.
Now speaking of Washington and cherry trees, maybe you have heard the story about America's first president. As a boy George Washington supposedly told his father: "I cannot tell a lie. I chopped down the cherry tree." Is the story true? "Probably not," says the Web site for Washingtons home at Mount Vernon, Virginia.
February twenty-second was George Washington's birthday. But not much is known about his childhood. So it seems that a biography written shortly after his death included several invented stories about his early life. These were meant to show where he got his heroic qualities. Children then learned the story of the cherry tree in a school book, and it became rooted in popular history.

So what I want to do today is give you a good understanding of what to expect on a driver's road test, and give you some tips on how to pass the test.
And the test is basically a series of turns, some rights, and some lefts, and then two maneuvers, a broken U-turn, and parallel parking.
So for the right turn, where we'll start, the basic idea for the right turn is that you're going to have your car over to the right side of the lane that you're on and you're going to make sure you make the turn into the right lane of the street that you're going onto. Pretty much no guesswork in a right turn. It's always the same, from right to right at all times. Right lane to right lane.
The left turn is a lot trickier. And the left turn is the one that may get you on that road test. And the reason for the left turn being trickier is because you've got some decisions to make on the left. Do I make the turn into this lane or that lane? That will be determined whether or not that's a one-way or a two-way street. So you're ability to recognize that will be crucial on your road test.
What are some of the ways you can tell? A one-way street typically will have a sign on either corner. If you see a sign it's usually a one-way. It'll have an arrow on it. Therefore, the rule of thumb on the turns being closest to the available lane, if you see the one-way sign, the turn has to go into the left lane. If the street doesn't have a sign and it has a line down the middle, you can tell by the color of the line whether or not it's a one-way or a two-way. A white line would indicate one-way street. Again, you'll make your turn onto the left side. A yellow line indicates a two-way street, which means that you've got to make the turn out to the right side of the street.
The most difficult one will be the street that doesn't have the line on it. The way you can tell on a street like that, look for the direction of the parked cars. If they're parked in opposite directions, that's going to indicate a two-way street. Remember your rule of thumb, you choose the closest available lane, and you're going to swing out to the right. This is the turn that typically tricks people the most on the road test.
Your two maneuvers are a parking, and a broken U-turn. Broken U-turn real simple, you just pull over against the curb on the right, put your indicator on. The whole idea is to take your car from the right side here, bring it across to the other side, then you're going to back up, and then you're going to go back the same way you came on that roadway.
My tip for this is when you're doing the backing part, you don't want to back up all the way to the other curb, because usually when you do that you come out on the wrong side of the street.
The other maneuver is the parallel parking. Don't worry so much about it. You get a big space to park, and as long as you look back and go back slowly, it shouldn't be a problem for you.
And that's it. That's your road test. Usually six turns, three rights, three lefts, a park, a broken U-turn, and it's over in about 10 minutes.

George Washington
George Washington (February 22, 1732 [O.S. February 11, 1731] – December 14, 1799) was the first President of the United States (1789–97), the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He presided over the convention that drafted the current United States Constitution and during his lifetime was called the "father of his country".
Widely admired for his strong leadership qualities, Washington was unanimously elected president in the first two national elections. He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the French Revolutionary Wars, suppressed the Whiskey Rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all types. Washington's incumbency established many precedents, still in use today, such as the cabinet system, the inaugural address, and the title Mr. President. His retirement from office after two terms established a tradition that lasted until 1940, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term. The 22nd Amendment (1951) now limits the president to eight years in office.

Tuckerman Ravine
Tuckerman Ravine is a glacial cirque sloping eastward on the southeast face of Mt. Washington, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Although it draws hikers throughout the year, and skiers throughout the winter, it is best known for the many "spring skiers" who ascend it on foot and ski down the steep slope from early April into July. In this period, the temperatures are relatively mild but the natural snowpack — which averages up to 55 feet (17 m) in a typical winter — is still adequate to ski most seasons. The record-setting high winds atop Mount Washington scour a massive amount of snow from the surrounding highlands and drop it here or in the adjacent Huntington Ravine.
Thousands of people have been known to ski Tuckerman in a single spring weekend. Skiing is not limited to this time, but the avalanche danger, peaking from late December to early March, requires special training and experience to assess and navigate the ravine safely during the winter. Avalanches have killed at least 10 people in the ravine since the 1960s. During a daring rescue in the winter of 1982, Albert Dow, a professional mountaineer, died near Tuckerman Ravine on Lion Head trail. An avalanche buried him, as he was looking for lost climbers. Albert Dow knowingly risked his life to search for the fellow climbers. Memorials can be found for Albert around the mountain. Plaques with his name can be found near trail signs, and more importantly on rescue caches. These rescue caches can be found in avalanche terrain on the east side of the mountain(Tuckerman and Huntington Ravine). These caches contain life saving equipment for mountain rescues.

In addition to housing Washington's books and manuscripts, the five-acre facility will serve as a scholarly retreat, create educational outreach programs on Washington and provide seminars and training programs with a special focus on Washington's leadership.The 45,000-square-foot library was designed by Ayers Saint Gross, an architectural design and planning firm in D.C. This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com Official snowfall records for Washington date back to eighteen eighty-four. By early February, this winter had already broken them with one hundred forty-two centimeters of snow measured. But the storms that buried the city broke more than seasonal records. Heavy snow and high winds damaged some of Washington's famous cherry trees. In the spring, crowds expect a beautiful show as the trees blossom along the edge of the Tidal Basin next to the Jefferson Memorial. Workers picked up broken branches, some as thick as fifteen centimeters. A few trees have lost their canopies. Peak blooming, when the trees are in full flower, may be delayed a little. But the National Park Service says people can expect the usual show of pink and white flowers. This year's National Cherry Blossom Festival is set for March twenty-seventh through April fourth. Twelve kinds of cherry trees grow around the Tidal Basin. The first trees were a gift from Japan in nineteen twelve. The Japanese later sent two more gifts of cherry trees. Cherry trees are valued for their flowers but also for their wood and their fruit. The United States and Turkey are leading producers of cherries, though not all cherry trees produce fruit. The two major kinds of cherries are sweet and sour. Sour cherries, sometimes called tart cherries, are used in foods and drinks. The state of Michigan is the nation's top producer of sour cherries. Washington -- not the city, but the state in the Pacific Northwest -- is the top producer of sweet cherries. Now speaking of Washington and cherry trees, maybe you have heard the story about America's first president. As a boy George Washington supposedly told his father: "I cannot tell a lie. I chopped down the cherry tree." Is the story true? "Probably not," says the Web site for Washingtons home at Mount Vernon, Virginia. February twenty-second was George Washington's birthday. But not much is known about his childhood. So it seems that a biography written shortly after his death included several invented stories about his early life. These were meant to show where he got his heroic qualities. Children then learned the story of the cherry tree in a school book, and it became rooted in popular history. And the test is basically a series of turns, some rights, and some lefts, and then two maneuvers, a broken U-turn, and parallel parking. So for the right turn, where we'll start, the basic idea for the right turn is that you're going to have your car over to the right side of the lane that you're on and you're going to make sure you make the turn into the right lane of the street that you're going onto. Pretty much no guesswork in a right turn. It's always the same, from right to right at all times. Right lane to right lane. The left turn is a lot trickier. And the left turn is the one that may get you on that road test. And the reason for the left turn being trickier is because you've got some decisions to make on the left. Do I make the turn into this lane or that lane? That will be determined whether or not that's a one-way or a two-way street. So you're ability to recognize that will be crucial on your road test. What are some of the ways you can tell? A one-way street typically will have a sign on either corner. If you see a sign it's usually a one-way. It'll have an arrow on it. Therefore, the rule of thumb on the turns being closest to the available lane, if you see the one-way sign, the turn has to go into the left lane. If the street doesn't have a sign and it has a line down the middle, you can tell by the color of the line whether or not it's a one-way or a two-way. A white line would indicate one-way street. Again, you'll make your turn onto the left side. A yellow line indicates a two-way street, which means that you've got to make the turn out to the right side of the street. The most difficult one will be the street that doesn't have the line on it. The way you can tell on a street like that, look for the direction of the parked cars. If they're parked in opposite directions, that's going to indicate a two-way street. Remember your rule of thumb, you choose the closest available lane, and you're going to swing out to the right. This is the turn that typically tricks people the most on the road test. Your two maneuvers are a parking, and a broken U-turn. Broken U-turn real simple, you just pull over against the curb on the right, put your indicator on. The whole idea is to take your car from the right side here, bring it across to the other side, then you're going to back up, and then you're going to go back the same way you came on that roadway. My tip for this is when you're doing the backing part, you don't want to back up all the way to the other curb, because usually when you do that you come out on the wrong side of the street. The other maneuver is the parallel parking. Don't worry so much about it. You get a big space to park, and as long as you look back and go back slowly, it shouldn't be a problem for you. And that's it. That's your road test. Usually six turns, three rights, three lefts, a park, a broken U-turn, and it's over in about 10 minutes. Good Luck. -

For this trip, I'll be heading up to the White Mountains for one more winter backpacking trip before the season ends. This will
also be my first attempt to climb Mt Washington in winter. Okay, climb may be a bit overzealous of a term, but it will be pretty
aggressive compared to my other winter hikes. Which brings up an important topic - additional gear needed. I'll get to that a

Parking Location: Pinkham Notch Visitor Center near Jackson, New Hampshire in the White Mountains.
List of Trails Used, in Order:
Start at Tuckerman Ravine Trailhead (located right behind visitor center)
Follow the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Stop at the Fire Road Junction. Do not continue up Tuckerman Ravine! You should see a sign stating that it is closed in winter due to avalanche danger.
Take Huntington Ravine Fire Road towards Harvard Cabin.
Arrive at Harvard Cabin to setup camp and get organized.
Once setup and geared appropriately, backtrack a bit down the Fire Road.
Before getting back to the junction, take the Lion's Head Winter Route on your right.
Follow Lion's Head Winter Route. This is a very steep trail opened as a safer alternative to Tuckerman Ravine Trail during avalanche season. Be prepared to use both
hands as well as your ice axe for support. While I did not carry one, a rope could be quite useful and convenient on the way back down.
Rejoin the Tuckerman Ravine Trail (you're above of the avalanche zone now).
Continue on Tuckerman Ravine Trail, crossing the summer Auto Road and on to the summit.
Follow course in reverse to return to Harvard Cabin to camp for the night.
On day two, hike back out via Huntington Ravine Fire Road and Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Extra Gear used for my Mt Washington Winter Ascent:
There were two pieces of gear that I brought on this trip, that I've never previously felt the need for on other White Mountains winter trips - Crampons and an ice axe.
The ice axe is not to be confused with an ice tool, specialized for actual ice climbing, supported by ropes and typically headed straight up a wall of ice. The ice as,
or mountaineering axe as it's also often called, is longer and straight with a pick for self arresting on one side (this is the primary reason to bring it out on the ice
fields of Mt Washington), and an adze on the other side for digging and chopping tasks. The adze is mostly used for more advanced mountaineering techniques than may be
required on a Mt Washington attempt, but it does come in handy around camp for setting up a home for the night.
The crampons I chose were universal strap-on crampons, so that I could use them with my regular, flexible winter hiking boots, as opposed to the typical Automatic or
semi-auto crampons that require a traditional hard plastic climbing boot, which I do not own.

Take Huntington Ravine Fire Road towards Harvard Cabin.
Arrive at Harvard Cabin to setup camp and get organized.
Once setup and geared appropriately, backtrack a bit down the Fire Road.
Before getting back to the junction, take the Lion's Head Winter Route on your right.
Follow Lion's Head Winter Route. This is a very steep trail opened as a safer alternative to Tuckerman Ravine Trail during avalanche season. Be prepared to use both
hands as well as your ice axe for support. While I did not carry one, a rope could be quite useful and convenient on the way back down.
Rejoin the Tuckerman Ravine Trail (you're above of the avalanche zone now).
Continue on Tuckerman Ravine Trail, crossing the summer Auto Road and on to the summit.
Follow course in reverse to return to Harvard Cabin to camp for the night.
On day two, hike back out via Huntington Ravine Fire Road and Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Extra Gear used for my Mt Washington Winter Ascent:
There were two pieces of gear that I brought on this trip, that I've never previously felt the need for on other White Mountains winter trips - Crampons and an ice axe.
The ice axe is not to be confused with an ice tool, specialized for actual ice climbing, supported by ropes and typically headed straight up a wall of ice. The ice as,
or mountaineering axe as it's also often called, is longer and straight with a pick for self arresting on one side (this is the primary reason to bring it out on the ice
fields of Mt Washington), and an adze on the other side for digging and chopping tasks. The adze is mostly used for more advanced mountaineering techniques than may be
required on a Mt Washington attempt, but it does come in handy around camp for setting up a home for the night.
The crampons I chose were universal strap-on crampons, so that I could use them with my regular, flexible winter hiking boots, as opposed to the typical Automatic or
semi-auto crampons that require a traditional hard plastic climbing boot, which I do not own.

Official snowfall records for Washington date back to eighteen eighty-four. By early February, this winter had already broken them with one hundred forty-two centimeters of snow measured.
But the storms that buried the city broke more than seasonal records. Heavy snow and high winds damaged some of Washington's famous cherry trees.
In the spring, crowds expect a beautiful show as the trees blossom along the edge of the Tidal Basin next to the Jefferson Memorial.
Workers picked up broken branches, some as thick as fifteen centimeters. A few trees have lost their canopies.
Peak blooming, when the trees are in full flower, may be delayed a little. But the National Park Service says people can expect the usual show of pink and white flowers. This year's National Cherry Blossom Festival is set for March twenty-seventh through April fourth.
Twelve kinds of cherry trees grow around the Tidal Basin. The first trees were a gift from Japan in nineteen twelve. The Japanese later sent two more gifts of cherry trees.
Cherry trees are valued for their flowers but also for their wood and their fruit. The United States and Turkey are leading producers of cherries, though not all cherry trees produce fruit.
The two major kinds of cherries are sweet and sour. Sour cherries, sometimes called tart cherries, are used in foods and drinks.
The state of Michigan is the nation's top producer of sour cherries. Washington -- not the city, but the state in the Pacific Northwest -- is the top producer of sweet cherries.

So it seems that a biography written shortly after his death included several invented stories about his early life. These were meant to show where he got his heroic qualities. Children then learned the story of the cherry tree in a school book, and it became rooted in popular history.

So what I want to do today is give you a good understanding of what to expect on a driver's road test, and give you some tips on how to pass the test.
And the test is basically a series of turns, some rights, and some lefts, and then two maneuvers, a broken U-turn, and parallel parking.
So for the right turn, where we'll start, the basic idea for the right turn is that you're going to have your car over to the right side of the lane that you're on and you're going to make sure you make the turn into the right lane of the street that you're going onto. Pretty much no guesswork in a right turn. It's always the same, from right to right at all times. Right lane to right lane.
The left turn is a lot trickier. And the left turn is the one that may get you on that road test. And the reason for the left turn being trickier is because you've got some decisions to make on the left. Do I make the turn into this lane or that lane? That will be determined whether or not that's a one-way or a two-way street. So you're ability to recognize that will be crucial on your road test.
What are some of the ways you can tell? A one-way street typically will have a sign on either corner. If you see a sign it's usually a one-way. It'll have an arrow on it. Therefore, the rule of thumb on the turns being closest to the available lane, if you see the one-way sign, the turn has to go into the left lane. If the street doesn't have a sign and it has a line down the middle, you can tell by the color of the line whether or not it's a one-way or a two-way. A white line would indicate one-way street. Again, you'll make your turn onto the left side. A yellow line indicates a two-way street, which means that you've got to make the turn out to the right side of the street.
The most difficult one will be the street that doesn't have the line on it. The way you can tell on a street like that, look for the direction of the parked cars. If they're parked in opposite directions, that's going to indicate a two-way street. Remember your rule of thumb, you choose the closest available lane, and you're going to swing out to the right. This is the turn that typically tricks people the most on the road test.
Your two maneuvers are a parking, and a broken U-turn. Broken U-turn real simple, you just pull over against the curb on the right, put your indicator on. The whole idea is to take your car from the right side here, bring it across to the other side, then you're going to back up, and then you're going to go back the same way you came on that roadway.
My tip for this is when you're doing the backing part, you don't want to back up all the way to the other curb, because usually when you do that you come out on the wrong side of the street.
The other maneuver is the parallel parking. Don't worry so much about it. You get a big space to park, and as long as you look back and go back slowly, it shouldn't be a problem for you.
And that's it. That's your road test. Usually six turns, three rights, three lefts, a park, a broken U-turn, and it's over in about 10 minutes.
