Fort Hays, originally named Fort Fletcher, was a United States Army fort near Hays, Kansas. Active from 1865 to 1889, it was an important frontier post during the American Indian Wars of the late 19th century. Reopened as a historical park in 1929, it is now operated by the Kansas Historical Society as the Fort Hays State Historic Site.
To protect Butterfield Overland Despatch stage and freight wagons traveling the Smoky Hill Trail from Cheyenne and Arapaho attacks, the U.S. Army established Fort Fletcher on October 11, 1865. Named after then governor of Missouri Thomas C. Fletcher, the fort was located on the trail 1⁄4 mile south of the confluence of Big Creek and the North Fork of Big Creek in western Kansas. Lt. Col. William Tamblyn and three companies of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Infantry established the post and were stationed there along with detachments of the 13th Missouri Cavalry. Raids on the stage line continued despite the military presence, and the line soon went bankrupt. Use of the trail ceased, and Fort Fletcher closed on May 5, 1866.

Kansas Jayhawks Basketball 2013. Fort Hays State University versus the University of Kansas. This game wasn't available to the VAST majority of the City of Ottawa, Kansas, which is less than 30 miles from KU. A greedy contract with a couple of cable companies alienated a lot of communities.

Mt Rushmore Tour at Fort Hays is a fantastic full day tour around Mt Rushmore and the Black Hill. I strongly recommend checking it out. Tour drivers like to have a bit of fun, so when we have to drive out 8 foot bus through a tunnel with only two inches or clearing on either side of the bus it was a sign for our driver to have fun. So he did, with both his passengers and the people watching from outside.

The opening of the West is the most colorful and romanticized period in American history, and the forts of the Western frontier were silent witnesses to this history. From the Northern Plains to the Southwest, from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, on the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, they were forerunners of settlement, bastions of refuge, centers of trade, and outposts of diplomatic and martial relations with indigenous peoples and foreign colonial powers. A video I had to do for my Diversity class in my Masters Degree. It was quickly shot on site at the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates ( Dubai ). I actually hope to reshoot this with a tripod in the future since I like how it shows all the different people of the world coming together for a common goal, to watch the fountain show.

(Deb) Welcome back and Frank and I are always encouraging you to get out and see the state and there's so much to see and do of course. And again, following up on a theme of what to get people for Christmas, there are memberships available at the friends' groups that support a lot of our state and national historic sites. But there's a few in particular I wanted to share with you today. And the Parks and Tourism asked me to write a blog for them a while back and we'll share that link for you. They wanted me to name my ten favorite sites and I thought, well that's the way to make enemies, you know, win friends and influence people. So, what I did was preface what I wrote about by saying if it's a state site or if it's a national site, it's so designated for a good reason. And those are plac...
In July 2010 my family and I took a road trip to South Dakota. We stopped in Watertown, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. We saw Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Pactola Lake, Wind Cave, Spearfish Canyon-Bridal Falls and Roughlock Falls, Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, Deadwood, and Sturgis. We ended our trip with a Chuckwagon Dinner and Show at Fort Hays. There were flowers, lots of hills, rocks, animals. It was a beautiful road trip for the family. I loved the part in the cave when they turned out all the lights, and the Wildlife Loop was really fun. Especially when the buffalo were holding up traffic, and the burrows were eating from our hands. The weather was great, too. Would recommend this family trip. Great for all ages. The song is called, My Wish, by Rascal Flatts.
