This is my shared reading of J.D. Smith's 'The Best Mariachi in the World', illustrations by Dani Jones. No copyright infringement is intended. Summary: Gustavo comes from a family of Mariachi players. He sees them play their guitars, trumpets and violins at restaurants and special events. McHenry IL: Raven Tree Press. *********Sample from Lesson Plan************ Pre-reading: The instructor will ask students to identify some things when they talk with their friends, students can demonstrate how they act and explain why. The instructor will identify the objective, the grand conversation reading strategy and model how to contribute effectively and meaningfully. Guided Reading: The class will gather for a shared reading While reading the pages, the instructor will use think alouds to signal to items within the text and illustrations that could be used in the grand conversations. After Reading: After the instructor reads the book, they will prepare for a grand conversation by the following: Responding: Students will create a reading log entry with their reflections about the story [sample on page 3]. This can include illustrations of their favorite part of the book, highlights they like or did not like, questions, etc. Students will then engage in small group (the members of their table) about the book. They will discuss the experience, message and object [the text structure, format, and presentation]. After students have engage in small group, the class will gather in a circle for a grand conversation. The teacher will ask, "Who would like to share their thoughts about the book?" If students are having difficulty getting started in sharing their thoughts, the instructor will share their thoughts, leaving it open for someone to comment. Each contributing member will take turns sharing his or her idea about the book. Exploring: The questions the instructor will ask are used to direct students to story aspects that may have been missed or discussed on a superficial level. The instructor can ask students about.. o Vocabulary: charro suit, sombrero, mariachi. o Instruments that make a mariachi group. o Being in a similar situation as Gustavo. o How to reach your dreams. o What the family members may have been thinking/feeling before and after Gustavos found his voice. o What cues did they use to understand the text. o The authors and illustrators collaboration. Applying: The student will rewrite a reading log to reflect on the ideas discussed in a grand conversation.
