President Uhuru Kenyatta has re-affirmed that the Kenya Defence Forces in Somalia will pursue Al Shabaab insurgents who attacked an AMISOM camp occupied by Kenyan troops inflicting several casualties. Speaking in Mombasa, the head of state condoled the families of the soldiers who lost their lives during Friday early morning attack and re-affirmed that Kenya will not shy away from protecting its territorial security and will not withdraw its forces from Somalia until the terror group is vanguished. And as Yussuf Ibrahim now reports, police have issued an alert calling on the public to remain vigilant in the wake of the Somali attack.
Last weeks attack on the Kenyan military base in Somalia will go down as the worst in the history of the Kenya Defense Forces.
So far, there have been no official figures on how many soldiers were killed, though unconfirmed reports indicate the casualty numbers could be in double or triple figures.
Details of the attack reveal a shift in how the militants engaged the Kenya Defence Forces, in both numbers and tactics.
Today, the Kenya Defence Forces gave a detailed account of what happened on that fateful day, as search and rescue operations continue, 6 days after the attack. Dennis Okari takes up that story.

Details have now emerged on how Al Shabaab militants orchestrated the 5:30 AM attack on two camps in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) base camp at El Adde in Somalia on Friday.
According to Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe, vehicles that had been commandeered by suicide bombers were driven into the camp, followed by a number of suicide attacks.
“We resisted and we have casualties and they have casualties,” said General Mwathethe.
The Kenya Defence Forces camp had a company of not more than 120 soldiers of which an unknown number was killed in the attack, others injured while others are missing.
Earlier, Al Shabaab said that it had captured some KDF soldiers during the attack on Friday.

Al Shabaab and Kenya Defence Forces battled for hours in a remote army base at El–Adde, South Somalia, after the militants attacked the compound of the Somali National Army.
The dawn attack prompted the Kenya Defence Forces to engage the militants from the ground to aerial bombardment.
KDF suffered fatalities though the official number was not yet out. President Uhuru Kenyatta released a statement condoling with the families of the soldiers saying their blood would not be shed in vain.

The Kenya Defence Forces have today renewed their resolve to crash the rag tag Al Shabaab militia they are currently battling inside Somalia under the AMISOM mandate. Speaking at a colourful ceremony organized to welcome back over 400 Kenyan troops who had served in Somalia, Army Commander Lt General Joseph Kasaon said KDF was committed to the pacification of Somalia and elimination of the Al Shabaab. The common perception of a soldier's life is that of an easy, fun-filled career of cheap afco-bought goods. But as the deployment of Kenyan Defence Force in Somali proves, being far away from home and for long periods in an environment where death from an enemy bullet is a constant threat is a harsh reality in a soldier's life. For combat forces, that means separation from loved ones and the agony of not knowing if you will return alive to see them again. Judy Kosgei spent time with KDF in Somalia and found out that behind the tough, battle-hardened faces are spouses, parents, children and siblings with nostalgia for home and family.

Details have now emerged on how Al Shabaab militants orchestrated the 5:30 AM attack on two camps in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) base camp at El Adde in Somalia on Friday.
According to Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe, vehicles that had been commandeered by suicide bombers were driven into the camp, followed by a number of suicide attacks.
“We resisted and we have casualties and they have casualties,” said General Mwathethe.
The Kenya Defence Forces camp had a company of not more than 120 soldiers of which an unknown number was killed in the attack, others injured while others are missing.
Earlier, Al Shabaab said that it had captured some KDF soldiers during the attack on Friday.

The common perception of a soldier's life is that of an easy, fun-filled career of cheap afco-bought goods. But as the deployment of Kenyan Defence Force in Somali proves, being far away from home and for long periods in an environment where death from an enemy bullet is a constant threat is a harsh reality in a soldier's life. For combat forces, that means separation from loved ones and the agony of not knowing if you will return alive to see them again. Judy Kosgei spent time with KDF in Somalia and found out that behind the tough, battle-hardened faces are spouses, parents, children and siblings with nostalgia for home and family.

KDF has denied the Somalia President's report that 180-200 Kenyan troops were killed in the attack in El Adde, Somalia on January 15. The country's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud was quoted by the BBC as saying it was difficult to lose that number of soldier in a single day. KDF spokesman David Obonyo told the Star on phone on Thursday that the matter of the number of casualties in the ambush by al Shabaab should not be trivialised ... ....
