At first things go badly for the Romans, complicated by the fact that Vercingetorix has captured and tortured a centurion named Claudius Valerius who's in love with Caesar's ward, Publia, who has also fallen into the hands of Vercingetorix. Eventually a great battle pitting Caesar against the rebellious Gaul decides the fate of all concerned.

The Roman Empire. Or Republic. Or...Which Was It?: Crash Course World History #10
In which
John Green explores exactly when
Rome went from being the
Roman Republic to the
Roman Empire. Here's a hint: it had something to do with
Julius Caesar, but maybe less than you think.
Find out how
Caesar came to rule the empire, what led to him getting stabbed 23 times on the floor of the senate, and what happened in the scramble for power after his assassination.
John covers Rome's transition from city-state to dominant force in the
Mediterranean in less than 12 minutes. Well, Rome's expansion took hundreds of years, he just explains it in under 12 minutes. The senate, the people, Rome, the caesarian section, the
Julian calendar and our old friend
Pompey all make appearances, but NOT the
Caesar Salad, as
Julius had nothing to do with it.

see what tomorrow brings - cicero blake - success 1963
it sounds like early soul, moody atmosphere
"mod-jazz" for us, isn't a label to define a genre, rather an approach to our lifestyle: we intend it with wider meaning, so we refer to many different moods with jazzy or bluesy roots (strong or weak that they are)
This channel is up on the tree of black music, span from cool vibes to rockin' rhythms.
Some styles we dig may appeal to mods, or may not.
Honestly our first aim is to spread sounds (and promote vinyl) all around jazz, with a focus on mid-50s to early 60s, that for coincidence is the mod golden era too.
We aren't connoisseurs at all, neither serious collectors, but deeply in love with this tunes for sure.
Enjoy our records.

Has history been tampered with? We shall never know just how many historical documents are in fact counterfeit.
History in general goes hand in hand with the history of forgeries; countless chronicles as well as works of art and literature have been considered authentic for centuries before becoming denounced as counterfeit.

A presumed fragment of

TURN ON CC to read an
English translation that I have tried to sync to the video. (enable CC on your tablet/mobile by tapping the "3 dots" in the upper right of the screen :)
First, let me apologize for the
American accent. I DO know how to pronounce consonants properly, but it's too much effort to keep up for a reading this long so I didnt even try ;)
"In
Defense of
Marcus Caelius" read/acted-out (as best I can) in
Latin.
THIS IS NOT A QUANTITATIVE READING.
All of my Latin videos I record reading directly from thelatinlibrary.com without macron or translation aids
..
ITAQUE, some parts of this speech go much smoother than others.. there are parts I am much more familiar with than others, and there is A
LOT of repetition throughout; & certainly there are mistakes in both reading and pronunciation-- HOWEVER, please keep in mind that this is a single continuous take of the entire speech, and
I've yet to find a full recording of it anywhere else! I am also working on an english version which I will post soon.
Cicero needs no introduction. We know that he loathed
Catullus, Clodia, Clodius, and all the other 'neoteric' hip-bohemian
Romans (which would also include Marcus Caelius..)
M. Caelius Rufus (defendant) = "
Caelius/ Rufus" (see Catullus. 58, 69, 77)
Clodia Metelli (chief complainant/harlot) = "Lesbia" most people are pretty convinced of it..
maybe a tenuous link, but I think a good piece of evidence for her identity is Cat. 49- addressed to Cicero: Catullus is (sarcastically) "thanking" (i.e. insulting) Cicero for WHAT? (----- I think for outing her identity in the
Pro Caelio!)
P. Clodius Pulcher (Clodia's brother/one of the jr. prosecutors) = "Lesbius
Pulcher" to catullus!
THE
KEY POEM is
CAT.79! the first 2 lines go something like. "Lesbius (i.e. Lesbia's brother) is PRETTY (PULCHER)..and what if he weren't-- Would then Lesbia despise him as she does you and all yours, Catullus?"
... the next two lines imply incest between the brother and sister, and also homosexual tendencies on Lesbius' part ('vendat' is a pun, and then the fact that people won't kiss him (socially) speaks to the cleanliness of his face/mouth...)
Basically in this speech all Cicero does is talk some serious shit about everybody and it's seriously awesome.
He was clearly less-concerned with actually defending Caelius than he was with advancing his own ego/reputation by using the opportunity to publicly humiliate a well-known brother/sister pair of
Patrician debaucherers-- Clodius/Clodia And humiliate them he does..
These two were like the Hiltons or Kardashians of the time... think over-privileged, junkie yuppy nitwits and picture them in the time of the late republic. Their names were originally
Claudius/
Claudia, but they had them changed so they would actually sound Plebian (
I'M NOT JOKING)
P. Clodius Pulcher, a prosecutor in the case, Clodia's younger brother and Caelius' former landlord, was known for being rather effeminate, as well as doing things like cross-dressing as a vestal virgin to infiltrate
Saturnalia festivals (
YES, THIS HAPPENED);
"Clodia Metelli"
Originally "Claudia Claudii" known for being a rather loose woman, since the death of her husband (Quintus
Metellus, murdered by poison, no less).
She was particularly known for entertaining her lovers at the bathes..
Cicero subtly-outs Clodia's identity as Catullus' Lesbia at several times in the speech, calling her a 'songbird', 'poetress' and 'inventress of fables' between repeatedly calling her a profligate whore/prostitute/harlot.
Actually,
I believe (no textual evidence, just an idea) that Catullus might have been involved somehow in this case-- though not mentioned by Cicero by-name, I believe he may have been Clodia's friends waiting in the baths to capture
Licinius?
Caelius, the defendant, was pretty much your typical 'man-child,' probably in his mid-late twenties (although still under his father's pecuniary authority,) and also probably mostly-guilty of the charges (as well as 'slander and abuse',) although Cicero was successful in getting him acquitted*. relies on attacking/humiliating Clodia. But Cicero doesn't stop with her, he also makes fun of his own client, the prosecution, the witnesses, and even the judges throughout the oration.
*
Free to pursue his civic life, at this
point Caelius makes the unfortunate decision of joining
Julius Caesar's side of the ensuing civil war and is killed.
Bottom line--
From the very onset of the speech, Cicero frames the whole circumstances of the trial as a comedy/farce being put on for the judges, who are forced to sit watch while the rest of the city is on holiday; using dramatic personification of both real and imaginary characters as a means within itself to make his points. This is some really entertaining stuff I've really enjoyed translating/geeking out on for the past year or so.

it sounds like early soul, moody atmosphere

A presumed fragment of
Cicero's "De Consolatione" discovered by the famous humanist scholar Sigonius only became identified as a work of the latter two centuries after the death of the author -- we would probably still believe in Cicero's authorship of said fragment if it hadn't been for the discovery of Sigonius' written confession.
Similar examples are rather abundant -- the "Thespian poet
Lucius Varus" who turned out to be a
18th century Dutch scientist by the name of Heerkens plagiarizing from the
16th century Venetian author Corrario, the
German "translation" of a
Phoenician history tractate by a student named Wagenfeld in the
19th century, "classical" texts sold to the
Leipzig library by a certain Schennis in the
1920's and so forth.
Think of just how many remain undiscovered -- after all, the larger part of the iceberg always remains underwater.
However, there may be an equal amount of valid historical documents in existence that were declared forgeries due to their being at odds with the official history.
Anatoly Fomenko, the prominent mathematician, was the first to apply natural scientific methods to historical data, coming up with a revolutionary theory which implies a radical revision of history as we know it. This theory finally explains such historical oddities as the existence of
Christian tabernacles in the pagan town of
Pompeii and the
Ottoman Turks referred to as "Persians" in mediaeval documents. It is rendered in Fomenko's fundamental work entitled: "History:
Fiction or
Science" which is finally out in
English. "
Sensational" is a very mild term -- this book is heretical, controversial and clearly subversive -- but even the most uncanny ideas it contains are all backed up by statistics, astronomy, and brilliant logic. Fomenko's book may infuriate you since it contradicts everything you were taught in school, but once you're through with it, your view of history shall never be the same again!
Dan Brown beats
Martin Luther with "
Da Vinci code"
Popular fiction dealing with conspiracies of one sort or another is actually quite tame as compared to reality. Dan Brown pens a possible conspiracy of the church against the memory of its originator
Jesus. He follows unknowingly in the steps of Martin Luther who started his protestant revolution with accusation of
Papal conspiracy in the matter of
Constantine's testament, take good note that Martin Luther was right and the testament was false . Well he had as media outlet nothing better than the doors of the
Wittenberg's cathedral. Dan Brown has mass media at his disposal.
The Roman Catholic Church, for instance, is involved in a much greater hoax than the most daring writer could possibly conceive of - one that deals with the very foundations of history itself. The above statement is neither an exaggeration, nor a metaphor - very few people are aware that the
B C A D chronology as we know it was created by a handful of
Jesuits in the
16th 17th century -
Joseph Scaliger,
Dionysius Petavius and their successors. We have grown so accustomed to a timeline that runs through many millennia, from the
Egyptian pyramids to the present day, that the mere thought of questioning its veracity seems perfectly preposterous - just like the notion of a rotating earth must have seemed in the epoch of
Galileo Galilei, and just as heretical. But nevertheless - the entire conception of ancient and mediaeval history know to us today owes its existence to a
XVI century Jesuit hoax. A hoax that has finally been exposed with the aid of astronomy, mathematical statistics and modern computational facilities by one of the world's leading mathematicians - the
Russian Academician
A. T. Fomenko. His fundamental work on chronology, now available in English, is more fascinating than Dan Brown at his wildest. Yet it is truly a non-fiction work - that goes to say, everything else you have read about history should probably classify as fiction. And, let's face it, much duller fiction than "
The Da Vinci Code" barnburner.
