Agnes is one of the "Five Great Asian Divas" of the 1970s and 1980s, along with Teresa Teng, Judy Ongg , Yu Ya, and Ouyang Feifei. As well as being a singer, Agnes is a television personality, a Doctor of Education, a professor at Japanese universities, an essayist, and a novelist. Since 1988, she has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and also supports the Japan Committee for UNICEF, a private corporation. Agnes was born in Hong Kong on August 20, 1955, the 5th born of 7 children. She received her Christian name "Agnes" when she was two years old. When she was 6, she enrolled in Maryknoll Sisters School, a Catholic missionary school in Hong Kong. In 1969, she met sister Rosalie, a nun from United States, and an adviser of her school's folk song club. Agnes was impressed with her singing, and asked sister Rosalie if she could join the club. After giving an audition, sister Rosalie accepted Agnes into the club. In 1970, she sang a song "A place in the sun" at the folk song concert and got an ovation from the audience. Word spread around about her singing and she was invited to concerts and parties in other schools in Hong Kong. A director of a TV station spotted Agnes' talent and featured her in his TV program as sister of Irene, a Hong Kong actress. She received an explosive reaction from the TV viewing audience, who requested her to appear again. She recorded Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game" in 1971 with Irene , and it became a hit song in Hong Kong. So at 16, she was a star. She became famous throughout southeast Asia, appearing in several of Chang Cheh's movies, including Young People and The Generation Gap. She was brought to Japan by Japanese singer/songwriter Masaaki Hirao. In 1972 she recorded her first Japanese pop hit, "Poppy Flower." Her clear voice, pretty looks, and imperfect Japanese made her a teenage idol. In 1973, her 3rd single, "Splendor in the Grass" earned her the Japan Record Grand Prix "Rookie of the Year" award. She graduated from The American School in Japan in 1973. She studied for two years at Tokyo's Sophia University, and then social child psychology at the University of Toronto in Canada. After graduating in 1978, she returned to Japan to resume her singing career. Her first Cantonese album was released in Hong Kong in 1979. She won a prize for her peace thesis for International Youth Year, 1984. Her first concert in China, a benefit for Soong Ching-ling's child fund, was held in 1985 at Beijing's capital gym for an audience of 54,000. Agnes' 1984 visit to Ethiopia during a drastic drought and food shortage was covered for the Nippon Television Network's annual "24-Hour TV" charity special. She began volunteer work once again, aside from continuing her entertainment career. In 1986, she married her former manager, Tsutomu Kaneko, and gave birth to her eldest son in Canada. After returning to Japan the following year, she began bringing her infant son to the workplace. This was seen as highly controversial ("Agnes" became something of a buzzword in Japan) and raised the question of a mother's place in the working world. She has had two more sons, and has continued to live a full and active life to this day, overcoming breast cancer in 2007.
