Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung (Nepali: प्रबल गुरुङ) (born 1979) is a Singapore-born Nepali fashion designer based in New York City.

Early life and education

Gurung was born on March 31, 1979 in Singapore to Nepali parents and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. He went to St. Xavier's School, a reputed Catholic Jesuit school in Kathmandu, where he finished his high school education. Prabal then went and did his Hotel Management from the National Council of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Dadar, Mumbai. Post his Hotel Management, Prabal began his designing career in New Delhi, India. While studying at New Delhi’s National Institute of Fashion Technology, he apprenticed at several local production and fashion houses and designed with Manish Arora. In Melbourne and London Gurung assisted stylists for fashion shows and international publications.

Career

in 1999, Gurung moved to New York City, where he interned for Donna Karan while attending Parsons School of Design. In his first year he was awarded the “Best Designer” title at the annual Parsons/FIT design competition. After Parsons, Gurung spent two years with Cynthia Rowley’s design team. Soon after, he became the design director at Bill Blass. Following five successful years at Blass, Gurung launched his own collection, PRABAL GURUNG, during New York Fashion Week in February 2009 at the FLAG Art Foundation in Chelsea. For Fall 2010, he staged his first runway show in the Tents at Bryant Park.

Gurung people

The Gurung people, also called Tamu, are an ethnic group from different parts of Nepal.

Religion

They are Buddhists and large minority of Hindus. Centuries of cultural influence from Tibet and its northern neighbours – which adopted the Tibetan culture to a heavy extent resulted in many Gurungs gradually embracing Tibetan Buddhism–particularly among Gurungs in the Manang region – over the centuries, particularly the Nyingma school.

Priestly practitioners of Gurung Dharma include lamas, ghyabri (klehpri), and pachyu (paju). Shamanistic elements among the Gurungs remain strong and most Gurungs often embrace Buddhist and Bön rituals in all communal activities.

Traditions

Gurung music is one of the traditional form of music from the indigenous Gurung community of Nepal. Gurung society is very rich in its cultural heritage and music plays an important role in their everyday life. Whather it is a child's birth, a marriage ceremony or a funeral, music plays a vital role in the process.

Fashion show

A fashion show is an event put on by a fashion designer to showcase his or her upcoming line of clothing during Fashion Week. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. This is where the latest fashion trends are made. The two most influential fashion weeks are Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, which are both semiannual events. Also, the Milan, London and Berlin are of global importance.

In a typical fashion show, models walk the catwalk dressed in the clothing created by the designer. The clothing is illuminated on the runway by the fashion show lighting. The order in which each model walks out wearing a specific outfit is usually planned in accordance to the statement that the designer wants to make about his or her collection. It is then up to the audience to not only try to understand what the designer is trying to say by the way the collection is being presented, but to also visually deconstruct each outfit and try to appreciate the detail and craftsmanship of every single piece.

Bipul Chettri

Bipul Chettri (Nepali: विपुल क्षत्री) is a Nepali singer/songwriter from Kalimpong, a small town in West Bengal of India. He sings folk music from the Eastern Himalayas with a contemporary indie touch. His debut album, Sketches of Darjeeling, was released in July 2014. He is currently the head of the Arts Department in Vasant Valley School, a leading school in India.

Early life

Chettri was born in Kalimpong, West bengal, India to late Narendra Mohan Chettri. He attended St. Augustine's School, Kalimpong, before graduating from Delhi University. Chettri later attended Trinity College, London to study classical guitar.

Musical career

His debut album Sketches of Darjeeling was released on July 25, 2014, and has been very well received in Nepal, North Bengal, Sikkim, as well as around the world by the Nepali diaspora. He currently heads the art department at Vasant Valley School, Delhi.
