Russia: Puchkov briefs Putin on EMERCOM's response to Far East wildfires

Head of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) Vladimir Puchkov briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on the developments of the wildfires in Russia’s Far East during a video conference between Sochi and Moscow, Wednesday. SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "I wanted to meet with you today to discuss natural disaster relief efforts, especially fighting wildfires. When I visited the Vostochny Cosmodrome I could see from the helicopter that smoke was rising in some places." SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian): "I would like to hear from you what specific measures are being taken and what plans have you made for the coming period, the summer holiday season." SOT, Vladimir Puchkov, Russian Emergencies Minister (Russian): "Since the beginning of the fire season, the territorial bodies of Emergencies Ministry together with our colleagues organised more than 11,500 operations as part of interdepartmental groups, the decisions were taken that allowed the improvement of fire protection at inhabited localities, economic facilities and social infrastructure. The explanatory work on the behaviour and the threat of wildfires among the population was strengthened, as well as the rules for fire safety and the implementation of preventive measures." SOT, Vladimir Puchkov, Russian Emergencies Minister (Russian): "States of emergency continue in 16 regions of Russia. The system of continuous monitoring from space is being developed, aviation is engaged including unmanned aviation that allows us to build a model [of the situation] and to take the necessary decisions on the transfer of forces, means and equipment in a timely manner." SOT, Vladimir Puchkov, Russian Emergencies Minister (Russian): "The patrolling of the inhabited localities was organized, especially in those areas that are located in the forest zone, in order to minimize the risks of the spread of fire and to ensure the following of fire safety instructions if weather conditions worsens. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry continues to increase the forces and means, as well as to transfer resources to help extinguish wildfires and protect inhabited localities."
