A safety bicycle is a type of bicycle that became very popular beginning in the late 1880s as an alternative to the penny-farthing or ordinary and is now the most common type of bicycle. Early bicycles of this style were known as safety bicycles because they were noted for, and marketed as, being safer than the high wheelers they were replacing. Even though modern bicycles use a similar design, the term is rarely used today, and may be considered obsolete.
The term safety bicycle was used in the 1880s for any alternative to the penny-farthing. The front and rear wheel were not necessarily the same size. Later historians began to use the term in a more restricted way, for the design that was a direct ancestor to most modern bicycles.
"Diamond frame" is also sometimes used as a term for safety bicycles, even though this technically only refers to a certain type of safety bicycle. The retronym "upright bicycle" is used to distinguish the style from recumbent bicycles.
Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational, or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm, or any other event that could be considered non-desirable. Safety can also be defined to be the control of recognized hazards to achieve an acceptable level of risk. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions.
There are two slightly different meanings of safety. For example, home safety may indicate a building's ability to protect against external harm events (such as weather, home invasion, etc.), or may indicate that its internal installations (such as appliances, stairs, etc.) are safe (not dangerous or harmful) for its inhabitants.
Discussions of safety often include mention of related terms. Security is such a term. With time the definitions between these two have often become interchanged, equated, and frequently appear juxtaposed in the same sentence. Readers unfortunately are left to conclude whether they comprise a redundancy. This confuses the uniqueness that should be reserved for each by itself. When seen as unique, as we intend here, each term will assume its rightful place in influencing and being influenced by the other.
Bike may refer to:
Bicycle safety is the use of practices designed to reduce risk associated with cycling. The risk can be defined as the number of incidents occurring for a given amount of cycling. In many countries both the number of incidents and the amount of cycling (expressed in kilometers, hours or trips) are not well known. Non-fatal accidents often go unreported and bicycle use is only occasionally monitored. Some of this subject matter is hotly debated: for example, the discussions as to whether bicycle helmets or cyclepaths really deliver improved safety. The merits of obeying the rules of the road including the use of bicycle lighting at night are less controversial.
The first recorded bicycle crash occurred in 1842, reportedly between Kirkpatrick McMillan, an early rider of the velocipede, and a young girl in Glasgow. The report, however, is vague and the identification disputed.
Causes of crashes vary according to local conditions. A study conducted in 2000 by the Institute for Road Safety Research in the Netherlands found that single bicycle crashes accounted for 47% of all bicycle crashes, collisions with obstacles and animals accounted for 12%, and collisions with other road users accounted for 40%, with the remaining 1% having unknown or unclassified cause. Many bicycle crashes are unreported and therefore not included in official statistics. Prospective studies estimate that less than 10% of bicycle crashes are officially reported.

While safe roads matter to everyone on a bike, professional cyclists spend more time on them than almost anyone. It's how they make a living. These talented, world-class athletes may seem super-human at times, but they are humans like any of us—vulnerable on the open road. In this video, five professional U.S. cyclists reflect on their experiences with bicycle safety. Some riders, like Lucas Euser and Craig Lewis, have seen their careers nearly end after severe crashes with people driving cars. Others, like current National Road Race Champion Timmy Duggan, haven't faced such extreme incidents, but still have a vision for better bicycling conditions and motorist-bicyclist interactions. All riders share their lessons and ideas for how our communities can become more bike-friendly and safer ...

I dropped into see Raoul Luescher from Luescher Teknik to see what we could do with the noisey seatpost on my Giant TCR build. While I was there I had Raoul tell us about his recent Instagram posts that had me intrigued. He's cutting a LOT of carbon bikes in half and sharing the results. *Yes the camera focus is disappointing. Daily emails about it were flowing in. I know. Canon G7X Mark II. Heading towards the bin* In this video Raoul shows us a LOT of expensive things cut in half, discusses the build quality, talks about how to safely cut carbon fibre components, and a lot more. He's an encyclopedia of knowledge and can explain the technical concepts of carbon in ways that's easy to undertand for us not-so-composite savvy people. Some background on Raoul: Raoul has also been involv...
On my bicycle commute home I discussed my past bicycle accidents. The majority of my early accidents involved riding too fast on turns with loose gravel in the road. Make sure to have your outer crank arm down and put as much body weight over that outer crank arm on the turns to increase your traction, and keeping your center of mass lower to the ground can also help. The majority of my more recent accidents involved unclipping too late from my clipless pedals when learning to ride clipless. Whenever you come to an intersection I recommend unclipping early to avoid a fall. I generally only unclip one foot. The majority of my most recent accidents involved falling on the ice due to riding too fast and without studded tires in the winter. I recommend studded tires whenever the temperature...

People will start seeing bicyclers and motorcyclers if the riders use thier brains and wear BRIGHT REFLECTIVE vests! This is the more legitimate way to be seen for bicycle and motorcycle safety. Bicycle riders and motorcycle riders need to lose the ego and start wearing orange, green or yellow reflective clothing if they really want to avoid an accident. Yes, it's fine to create mental awareness but the visual aspect is far more important here! In this video I also explain other hazards for bicyclists and motorcyclists like pollution and electricity from the power lines. It's best to ride on windy days for instance and it's best not to ride under the power lines if possible. Sometimes it's best to ride against traffic too. Look out for cars! Drivers cannot see bicycle riders very ...
This bike has been a long time in the making. I actually started making this video towards the end of last year but for one reason or another it got pushed to the back of the queue. Cycling is catching on as a viable alternative to the automobile. Bicycle commuting increased by more than 60% between 2000 and 2010 in the 70 largest cities in the U.S.. Nonetheless, cycling can be deadly, particularly in Florida, which is home to the four most dangerous cities for pedestrians and cyclists. While New Urbanists have been at the forefront of efforts to promote bicycle infrastructure, simply building bike lanes is not enough to reduce cycling-related deaths and injuries. In this session we will hear from leaders at the forefront of Florida's bicycle safety movement and discuss strategies for combining infrastructure, programming, advocacy, and policy to create a broader culture of bicycle safety. Keri Caffrey, Co-founder, CyclingSavvy DeWayne Carver, Senior Project Manager,...
