Loading a short program into one of our PDP8 computers.
This is a video of my 1971 DEC LAB-8/e minicomputer playing music. In this video it is revealed where the music comes from:
The music is generated by generating noise induced into an AM radio receiver near the CPU.
The software is Richard Wilson's "Music Compiler" written back in 1975. It runs under OS/8, one of Digital's operating systems for the PDP-8 series of computers.

Shown is a mid 1960's DEC PDP-8S minicomputer. It's a slow, serial, version of the original PDP-8 that was introduced in 1965. This one came from the Bugbook Historical Microcomputer Museum in Floyd, VA. Here's Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag on the PDP-8/E. The music is coming from the Coke bottle radio in front, tuned optimally to somewhere around 620 kHz. The Richard Wilson Music Compiler/Player on a PDP-8/E is capable of playing many songs with up to four notes at once. This computer *does* take requests, so long as you provide the music file! For more info on the syntax for the music programs, Google "DECUS pdp-8 music program" and view the PDF.

A simple test program for the PDP-8/E that I wrote. I'm sure it exists elsewhere, but as one person suggested to me, it'd be a good exercise in learning the PDP-8 instruction set. It can certainly be further optimized and also slowed down a bit. Here's my (hand-compiled) listing:

On July 12th, 1996, an intrepid group from Dallas drove to St. Louis on a mission. The mission was to save a collection of PDP-8 systems and associated artifacts from being scrapped. Armed with more technology than common sense, we rented a van and sought to recover this collection of Digital Equipment Corporation history.
It was quite an adventure to make this trip and recover 4 different PDP-8's, TU58 tape drives, a couple of ASR-33 teletype consoles, and lots of paper tape of software, tools, documentation, and other artifacts.
The crew was comprised of John R. Wisniewski, Pat Jankowiak, and David Cathey.

On July 12th, 1996, an intrepid group from Dallas drove to St. Louis on a mission. The mission was to save a collection of PDP-8 systems and associated artifacts from being scrapped. Armed with more technology than common sense, we rented a van and sought to recover this collection of Digital Equipment Corporation history.
