Rocky Marciano was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano, on September 1, 1923, in Brockton, Massachusetts. During his career, Marciano held the heavyweight boxing title for four years in the 1950s, and he is the only boxing champion to ever retire undefeated.
His father, Pierino, worked at a shoe factory. His mother's name was Pasqualena, and Rocky would spend much of his life making sure she didn't have to live in the poverty that Rocky knew growing up. Marciano was a typical American kid, playing baseball and football and dreaming of a professional career in one of those sports. He didn't take up boxing until after 1943, when he was drafted into the Army. He took up the sport mainly as a way to avoid KP (assisting the cooks) and other less desirable activities, but he showed a natural ability and fought as an amateur following his discharge in 1946.
In 1947, Marciano had a tryout with the Chicago Cubs as a catcher, but was let go because he couldn't make the throw from home plate to second base with accuracy. It was the end of his baseball dreams, and the following year he turned professional in the ring. By the spring of 1949, his boxing skills had garnered some attention, as he knocked out his first 16 opponents. The quality of his opponents improved over the latter half of 1949 and 1950, but Marciano continued to beat challengers, knocking out most of them.
There were those who didn/'t think much would become of the 190-pound heavyweight from Brockton in the early days. Goody Petronelli, noted fight trainer, caught one of his early fights and recalled for Sports Illustrated, "I never thought he'd make it. He was too old, almost 25. He was too short, he was too light. He had no reach. Rough and tough, but no finesse." The hometown folks became believers, though, traveling in groups to Marciano's fights in nearby Providence, Rhode Island, and yelling "Timmmmberrr" when Rocky had an opponent ready to go down.
Trainer Charley Goldman taught Marciano his trademark technique, which would serve him well as champion. On October 26, 1951, with 37 wins and 32 knockouts under his belt, Marciano faced his most formidable opponent in former heavyweight champion Joe Louis. Louis was past his prime and when Marciano knocked him out in the eighth round, he had such mixed feelings at beating his hero that he cried in Louis' dressing room after the fight. Sentiment aside, however, the fight established Marciano as one of the marquee fighters in the heavyweight division, and assured him of a title shot before too long. Regarding Muhammad Ali being referred to as Cassius Clay throughout the interview, I believe it is important to consider this exchange in its proper historical context.
Australia in the 1960's was, for the most part, a conservative, Anglo-Celtic Christian nation. Islamic religion and culture were virtually unknown to most people. It is fair to say this ignorance extended to Ron Casey and the team at World of Sport.
It is true that Ali changed his name years before this interview was conducted, but we must allow Ron Casey and Rocky Marciano some latitude. When a "young loudmouth" boxer with a history of self promotion changes his name, it is not difficult to understand why conservative white society may assume this to be a publicity stunt. Better to refer to him by his old, easy-to-pronounce name than his exotic, foreign moniker.
To modern-day sensibilities, referring to Muhammad Ali as Cassius Clay seems disrespectful. But peeling back 50 years of social and political progress makes this reference easier to understand.
Insensitive? Perhaps. Malicious? I don't think so. I cannot comment on the American experience, but Australian society simply wasn't culturally diverse enough to accept Ali's change of name without some level of skepticism.

`The Super Fight` was a fictional 1969 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano. At the time, Ali and Marciano were the only undefeated heavyweight champions in history and fans often debated who would win had they met in their primes. Ali and Marciano were filmed acting out every possible scenario in a fight and the result was then determined using probability formulas entered into a computer. The final fight was only shown once in selected cinemas around the world and later released as a DVD.
In 1967, radio producer Murray Woroner had the idea of determining the all-time great heavyweight champion of the world in a series of fantasy fights between boxing champions of different eras. Woroner sent out a survey to 250 boxing experts and writers to help determine which boxers would be used in the imaginary fights. Woroner picked the first round of fantasy matches to be:

John L. Sullivan vs. Jim Braddock
Bob Fitzsimmons vs. Jack Sharkey
Jim Jeffries vs. Jersey Joe Walcott
Joe Louis vs. Jess Willard

Punch-by-punch details of the boxer's records during their prime were entered into an NCR 315 computer. Also their strengths, weaknesses, fighting styles and patterns and other factors and scenarios that the boxers could go through were converted into formulas. The NCR-315 with 20K of memory was supplied by SPS (Systems Programming Services), an independent service bureau in Miami Fla. The algorithms was supplied by an NCR mathematician, and programming was done in Fortran by an employee of SPS. Hank Meyer, President and salesman with a one other partner in SPS, was instrumental in setting this competition up, and contended at the time that it was his idea. The actual running of the software was done the night before each broadcast round of the 'computer championship' and took approximately 45 minutes to run, the ouptut was a formatted report containing a series of codes describing each punch. This was then written to magnetic tape, the tape was then manually transferred to a Univac 1005 and printed. This early form of "foot-powered" networking was referred to as sneakernet, the reason for doing this was cost, it was cheaper to print on a 1005 than the 315. This took place in early 1968; the NCR 315 was a state-of-the-art computer at the time.
The outcomes were then staged as radio plays with Woroner and radio announcer Guy LeBow as the commentators. The fantasy fights were broadcast worldwide. Even the boxers who were still alive at the time listened to the programs and some of them participated as commentators. After the series of elimination rounds, the final fight was between Dempsey and Marciano. Marciano defeated Dempsey and was considered to be the all-time greatest heavyweight champion by the computer. Woroner awarded the real Marciano a gold and diamond championship belt worth $10,000.
Ali was angered over his loss to Jim Jeffries in the fantasy fights and sued Woroner for $1 million for defamation of character. The lawsuit was settled when Woroner offered to pay Ali $10,000 to participate in a filmed version of his radio fantasy fights in which Ali would fight Marciano. Ali, who had been stripped of his heavyweight title and American boxing license three years prior, agreed on the condition that he would also receive a cut of the film's profits. Marciano also agreed to participate with a similar deal. The same formulas were used again and entered into the NCR 315. In 1969, filming began in a Miami studio.
Marciano, who had been retired for almost 13 years, lost over 50 pounds and wore a toupee in order to look as he did in his prime. Even for a "fake" fight, Marciano and Ali really looked forward to meeting each other and getting back in the ring.
The two fighters sparred for about 70 to 75 rounds, which were later spliced together according to the computer's findings which had not yet been determined. Every probable scenario was filmed. The final outcome would not be revealed to anyone until the release of the film. Braddock, Louis, Schmeling, Sharkey and Walcott also recorded commentary to be used in the film. Marciano died in a plane crash three weeks after filming wrapped [1].
On January 20, 1970, the fight was shown only once in 1500 theaters over closed-circuit television in the United States, Canada, and throughout Europe. It grossed $5 million. The computer had determined that Marciano would knock Ali out in the 13th round and the film was edited to present that outcome. All prints of the fight except one were supposed to be immediately destroyed, per Woroner's stipulation. However, many theaters played the show long after January 20th.
After watching the film, Ali reportedly said "That computer was made in Alabama," joking that Marciano was favored because he was white.

Marciano was born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts to Pierino Marchegiano and Pasqualina Picciuto. Both of his parents were immigrants from Italy: his father was from Ripa Teatina, Abruzzo, while his mother was from San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Campania. Rocky had three sisters—Alice, Concetta and Elizabeth—and two brothers—Sonny and Peter. When he was about eighteen months old, he got pneumonia, from which he almost died.
In his youth, he played baseball, worked out on homemade weightlifting equipment (later in his life, Marciano was also a client of Charles Atlas) and used a stuffed mail bag that hung from a tree in his back yard as a heavy bag. He attended Brockton High School, where he played both baseball and football. However, he was cut from the school baseball team because he had joined a church league, violating a school rule forbidding players from joining other teams. He dropped out of school after finishing tenth grade.

Michael Gerard "Mike" Tyson (born June 30, 1966) is a retired American professional boxer. Tyson is a former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles at 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old. Tyson won his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, with 12 of them occurring in the first round. He won the WBC title in 1986 after defeating Trevor Berbick by a TKO in the second round. In 1987, Tyson added the WBA and IBF titles after defeating James Smith and Tony Tucker. He was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles, and the only heavyweight to individually unify them.
In 1988, Tyson became the lineal champion when he knocked out Michael Spinks in the first 91 seconds of the fight. Tyson successfully defended the world heavyweight championship nine times, including victories over Larry Holmes and Frank Bruno. Tyson lost his titles to 42-to-1 underdog James "Buster" Douglas on February 11, 1990, in Tokyo, Japan, by a knockout in round 10. Tyson continued in his quest to regain the titles, defeating Donovan Ruddock twice in 1991. Tyson was then scheduled to take on the undisputed heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield but pulled out due to injury.

At the time, Ali and Marciano were the only undefeated heavyweight champions in history and fans often debated who would win had they met in their primes. Ali and Marciano were filmed acting out every possible scenario in a fight and the result was then determined using probability formulas entered into a computer. The final fight was only shown once in selected cinemas around the world and later released as a DVD. In 1967, radio producer Murray Woroner had the idea of determining the all-time great heavyweight champion of the world in a series of fantasy fights between boxing champions of different eras. Woroner sent out a survey to 250 boxing experts and writers to help determine which boxers would be used in the imaginary fights. Woroner picked the first round of fantasy matches to be: Jack Dempsey vs. Gentleman Jim Corbett John L. Sullivan vs. Jim Braddock Bob Fitzsimmons vs. Jack Sharkey Jim Jeffries vs. Jersey Joe Walcott Joe Louis vs. Jess Willard Max Baer vs. Jack Johnson Rocky Marciano vs. Gene Tunney Muhammad Ali vs. Max Schmeling Punch-by-punch details of the boxer's records during their prime were entered into an NCR 315 computer. Also their strengths, weaknesses, fighting styles and patterns and other factors and scenarios that the boxers could go through were converted into formulas. The NCR-315 with 20K of memory was supplied by SPS (Systems Programming Services), an independent service bureau in Miami Fla. The algorithms was supplied by an NCR mathematician, and programming was done in Fortran by an employee of SPS. Hank Meyer, President and salesman with a one other partner in SPS, was instrumental in setting this competition up, and contended at the time that it was his idea. The actual running of the software was done the night before each broadcast round of the 'computer championship' and took approximately 45 minutes to run, the ouptut was a formatted report containing a series of codes describing each punch. This was then written to magnetic tape, the tape was then manually transferred to a Univac 1005 and printed. This early form of "foot-powered" networking was referred to as sneakernet, the reason for doing this was cost, it was cheaper to print on a 1005 than the 315. This took place in early 1968; the NCR 315 was a state-of-the-art computer at the time. The outcomes were then staged as radio plays with Woroner and radio announcer Guy LeBow as the commentators. The fantasy fights were broadcast worldwide. Even the boxers who were still alive at the time listened to the programs and some of them participated as commentators. After the series of elimination rounds, the final fight was between Dempsey and Marciano. Marciano defeated Dempsey and was considered to be the all-time greatest heavyweight champion by the computer. Woroner awarded the real Marciano a gold and diamond championship belt worth $10,000. Ali was angered over his loss to Jim Jeffries in the fantasy fights and sued Woroner for $1 million for defamation of character. The lawsuit was settled when Woroner offered to pay Ali $10,000 to participate in a filmed version of his radio fantasy fights in which Ali would fight Marciano. Ali, who had been stripped of his heavyweight title and American boxing license three years prior, agreed on the condition that he would also receive a cut of the film's profits. Marciano also agreed to participate with a similar deal. The same formulas were used again and entered into the NCR 315. In 1969, filming began in a Miami studio. Marciano, who had been retired for almost 13 years, lost over 50 pounds and wore a toupee in order to look as he did in his prime. Even for a "fake" fight, Marciano and Ali really looked forward to meeting each other and getting back in the ring. The two fighters sparred for about 70 to 75 rounds, which were later spliced together according to the computer's findings which had not yet been determined. Every probable scenario was filmed. The final outcome would not be revealed to anyone until the release of the film. Braddock, Louis, Schmeling, Sharkey and Walcott also recorded commentary to be used in the film. Marciano died in a plane crash three weeks after filming wrapped [1]. On January 20, 1970, the fight was shown only once in 1500 theaters over closed-circuit television in the United States, Canada, and throughout Europe. It grossed $5 million. The computer had determined that Marciano would knock Ali out in the 13th round and the film was edited to present that outcome. All prints of the fight except one were supposed to be immediately destroyed, per Woroner's stipulation. However, many theaters played the show long after January 20th. After watching the film, Ali reportedly said "That computer was made in Alabama," joking that Marciano was favored because he was white. -

During his career, Marciano held the heavyweight boxing title for four years in the 1950s, and he is the only boxing champion to ever retire undefeated. His father, Pierino, worked at a shoe factory. His mother's name was Pasqualena, and Rocky would spend much of his life making sure she didn't have to live in the poverty that Rocky knew growing up. Marciano was a typical American kid, playing baseball and football and dreaming of a professional career in one of those sports. His father, Pierino, worked at a shoe factory. His mother's name was Pasqualena, and Rocky would spend much of his life making sure she didn't have to live in the poverty that Rocky knew growing up. Marciano was a typical American kid, playing baseball and football and dreaming of a professional career in one of those sports. He didn't take up boxing until after 1943, when he was drafted into the Army. He took up the sport mainly as a way to avoid KP (assisting the cooks) and other less desirable activities, but he showed a natural ability and fought as an amateur following his discharge in 1946.
In 1947, Marciano had a tryout with the Chicago Cubs as a catcher, but was let go because he couldn't make the throw from home plate to second base with accuracy. It was the end of his baseball dreams, and the following year he turned professional in the ring. By the spring of 1949, his boxing skills had garnered some attention, as he knocked out his first 16 opponents. The quality of his opponents improved over the latter half of 1949 and 1950, but Marciano continued to beat challengers, knocking out most of them.
There were those who didn/'t think much would become of the 190-pound heavyweight from Brockton in the early days. Goody Petronelli, noted fight trainer, caught one of his early fights and recalled for Sports Illustrated, "I never thought he'd make it. He was too old, almost 25. He was too short, he was too light. He had no reach. Rough and tough, but no finesse." The hometown folks became believers, though, traveling in groups to Marciano's fights in nearby Providence, Rhode Island, and yelling "Timmmmberrr" when Rocky had an opponent ready to go down.
Trainer Charley Goldman taught Marciano his trademark technique, which would serve him well as champion. On October 26, 1951, with 37 wins and 32 knockouts under his belt, Marciano faced his most formidable opponent in former heavyweight champion Joe Louis. Louis was past his prime and when Marciano knocked him out in the eighth round, he had such mixed feelings at beating his hero that he cried in Louis' dressing room after the fight. Sentiment aside, however, the fight established Marciano as one of the marquee fighters in the heavyweight division, and assured him of a title shot before too long. Regarding Muhammad Ali being referred to as Cassius Clay throughout the interview, I believe it is important to consider this exchange in its proper historical context.
Australia in the 1960's was, for the most part, a conservative, Anglo-Celtic Christian nation. Islamic religion and culture were virtually unknown to most people. It is fair to say this ignorance extended to Ron Casey and the team at World of Sport.
It is true that Ali changed his name years before this interview was conducted, but we must allow Ron Casey and Rocky Marciano some latitude. When a "young loudmouth" boxer with a history of self promotion changes his name, it is not difficult to understand why conservative white society may assume this to be a publicity stunt. Better to refer to him by his old, easy-to-pronounce name than his exotic, foreign moniker.
To modern-day sensibilities, referring to Muhammad Ali as Cassius Clay seems disrespectful. But peeling back 50 years of social and political progress makes this reference easier to understand.
Insensitive? Perhaps. Malicious? I don't think so. I cannot comment on the American experience, but Australian society simply wasn't culturally diverse enough to accept Ali's change of name without some level of skepticism.

Australian sports broadcaster Ron Casey interviews boxing legend, Rocky Marciano. Marciano discusses Muhammad Ali (referred to as Cassius Clay) and his most recent defence of the World Heavyweight Title against Brian London. Marciano also discusses Ali's impact on the world of boxing.

Regarding Muhammad Ali being referred to as Cassius Clay throughout the interview, I believe it is important to consider this exchange in its proper historical context.
Australia in the 1960's was, for the most part, a conservative, Anglo-Celtic Christian nation. Islamic religion and culture were virtually unknown to most people. It is fair to say this ignorance extended to Ron Casey and the team at World of Sport.
It is true that Ali changed his name years before this interview was conducted, but we must allow Ron Casey and Rocky Marciano some latitude. When a "young loudmouth" boxer with a history of self promotion changes his name, it is not difficult to understand why conservative white society may assume this to be a publicity stunt. Better to refer to him by his old, easy-to-pronounce name than his exotic, foreign moniker.
To modern-day sensibilities, referring to Muhammad Ali as Cassius Clay seems disrespectful. But peeling back 50 years of social and political progress makes this reference easier to understand.
Insensitive? Perhaps. Malicious? I don't think so. I cannot comment on the American experience, but Australian society simply wasn't culturally diverse enough to accept Ali's change of name without some level of skepticism.

At the time, Ali and Marciano were the only undefeated heavyweight champions in history and fans often debated who would win had they met in their primes. Ali and Marciano were filmed acting out every possible scenario in a fight and the result was then determined using probability formulas entered into a computer. The final fight was only shown once in selected cinemas around the world and later released as a DVD.
In 1967, radio producer Murray Woroner had the idea of determining the all-time great heavyweight champion of the world in a series of fantasy fights between boxing champions of different eras. Woroner sent out a survey to 250 boxing experts and writers to help determine which boxers would be used in the imaginary fights. Woroner picked the first round of fantasy matches to be:
Jack Dempsey vs. Gentleman Jim Corbett
John L. Sullivan vs. Jim Braddock
Bob Fitzsimmons vs. Jack Sharkey
Jim Jeffries vs. Jersey Joe Walcott
Joe Louis vs. Jess Willard
Max Baer vs. Jack Johnson
Rocky Marciano vs. Gene Tunney
Muhammad Ali vs. Max Schmeling
Punch-by-punch details of the boxer's records during their prime were entered into an NCR 315 computer. Also their strengths, weaknesses, fighting styles and patterns and other factors and scenarios that the boxers could go through were converted into formulas. The NCR-315 with 20K of memory was supplied by SPS (Systems Programming Services), an independent service bureau in Miami Fla. The algorithms was supplied by an NCR mathematician, and programming was done in Fortran by an employee of SPS. Hank Meyer, President and salesman with a one other partner in SPS, was instrumental in setting this competition up, and contended at the time that it was his idea. The actual running of the software was done the night before each broadcast round of the 'computer championship' and took approximately 45 minutes to run, the ouptut was a formatted report containing a series of codes describing each punch. This was then written to magnetic tape, the tape was then manually transferred to a Univac 1005 and printed. This early form of "foot-powered" networking was referred to as sneakernet, the reason for doing this was cost, it was cheaper to print on a 1005 than the 315. This took place in early 1968; the NCR 315 was a state-of-the-art computer at the time.
The outcomes were then staged as radio plays with Woroner and radio announcer Guy LeBow as the commentators. The fantasy fights were broadcast worldwide. Even the boxers who were still alive at the time listened to the programs and some of them participated as commentators. After the series of elimination rounds, the final fight was between Dempsey and Marciano. Marciano defeated Dempsey and was considered to be the all-time greatest heavyweight champion by the computer. Woroner awarded the real Marciano a gold and diamond championship belt worth $10,000.
Ali was angered over his loss to Jim Jeffries in the fantasy fights and sued Woroner for $1 million for defamation of character. The lawsuit was settled when Woroner offered to pay Ali $10,000 to participate in a filmed version of his radio fantasy fights in which Ali would fight Marciano. Ali, who had been stripped of his heavyweight title and American boxing license three years prior, agreed on the condition that he would also receive a cut of the film's profits. Marciano also agreed to participate with a similar deal. The same formulas were used again and entered into the NCR 315. In 1969, filming began in a Miami studio.
Marciano, who had been retired for almost 13 years, lost over 50 pounds and wore a toupee in order to look as he did in his prime. Even for a "fake" fight, Marciano and Ali really looked forward to meeting each other and getting back in the ring.
The two fighters sparred for about 70 to 75 rounds, which were later spliced together according to the computer's findings which had not yet been determined. Every probable scenario was filmed. The final outcome would not be revealed to anyone until the release of the film. Braddock, Louis, Schmeling, Sharkey and Walcott also recorded commentary to be used in the film. Marciano died in a plane crash three weeks after filming wrapped [1].
On January 20, 1970, the fight was shown only once in 1500 theaters over closed-circuit television in the United States, Canada, and throughout Europe. It grossed $5 million. The computer had determined that Marciano would knock Ali out in the 13th round and the film was edited to present that outcome. All prints of the fight except one were supposed to be immediately destroyed, per Woroner's stipulation. However, many theaters played the show long after January 20th.
After watching the film, Ali reportedly said "That computer was made in Alabama," joking that Marciano was favored because he was white.

Each of the 30 episodes included studio interviews between Rocky and a contemporary celebrity, actor or sports star. One of Rocky's many ventures was to co-produce a TV sports program in 1961 called Main Event. The low budget "Mad-Men" era production was a studio talk show and review of epic fights. The setting was a modest living room arrangement with a sofa where Rocky and his guests would sit and talk. For each episode, Rocky would host a different sports figure, entertainer or celebrity of the day. The shows format was tightly structured and scripted. After introductions and a brief conversation, a featured fight film was shown and then discussed between commercial breaks. The fights were almost all Madison Square Garden films. Some fights were classics, some now obscure. During each fight, Rocky would narrate the voice over. If it was one of his fights, we'd get his perspective on the action. If other fighters were featured, he'd be describing the action and offering his analysis. It was vintage television.

This is the third installment of interviews that Rocky Marciano conducted among the 30 episodes of his 1961 television program, Main Event. Each program would include a brief interview with Marciano and his guest, either an artist, entertainer, sports figure or a celebrity. The program would also feature a period or classic fight, which Rocky would narrate, and then discuss with his guest. In retrospect, the interviews themselves have become classics, which is why I wanted to show them. This footage comes from my collection of 16mm prints.
Two Singers and a Gangster
Of the three guests seen here, only Nat King Cole may be familiar to younger viewers, and mostly due to Cole’s daughter, Natalie. In the early 1990s she showcased old TV footage of her father for a series of famous “duet” music videos where the producers created the illusion of Natalie singing with her father. Nat Cole, a brilliant pianist and singer who crossed between pop and jazz, was still a very popular figure in 1961, charting hits until his death of lung cancer just four years after this program was filmed. I like that all three of the guests here were not only genuine boxing fans, but each had boxed at some point when they were growing up as well. When Nate mentions “signing up” a fighter, it sounds archaic - as if he just bought himself a race horse. It goes to show how popular boxing still was at the time and how fighters were regarded as “investments”. Jimmy Durante was one of the most iconic entertainers of the 20th century. A singer, actor and pianist, his gravelly voice, giant Schnozzola, and trademark vaudeville comic style was uniquely American, and made him instantly recognizable everywhere he performed. George Raft the actor, like Durante, is likely familiar to modern audiences through someone’s impression of him, rather than of the man himself. Raft’s successful work was portraying gangsters in movies during the 1930s and 40s. His associations with real life mob figures however, and the fellow actors whom he influenced, have been his legacy. At the time of his appearance on Rocky’s program, Raft’s career was a decade past its peak, which he alludes to, and his remaining movies were mostly as guest roles.

I was fading in and out of reality.

I was so far gone I wasn't even sure if Marley said, "Randall," or "Swindle."

I looked up and around the bus. Everyone, including the hot slim brunette in slim to none clothing, that I purposefully sat in front of, was asleep. I closed my eyes and dozed off again. Soon after inertia shoved me an inch or two forward.
We stopped. The doors opened, and the driver announced, "Ft Myers," before running to take a whiz or purchase a delicious refreshment.
The bus stood in the middle of a gas station parking lot, next to an Arby's and an Adult video store.
I sat up and took out my video camera and looked at a few portions of the interview with Dundee.

We were roughly an hour away from West Palm Beach, the comfy leather couch I was crashing on, and my friend's little molesting dog that humped everything in site.

The Journey!
It was dark, quiet, and 11 p.m. at night. Everyone, including myself, was sound asleep. I heard my familiar cell ring tone and fumbled about to turn the thing off. Two seconds, a wrong button pressed later, and there was no choice but to own up and answer the damn thing as best I could.
-Hello?
-Hey Slava where are ya?
I looked up and around. Lampposts whizzed by at blinding speeds and illuminated the interior of the bus only slightly. I had no idea where I was. Of course, as luck would have it fate intervened.
-"Coming up on Ft. Myers, FL."
The driver's voice was thick with indifference.
-Ft. Myers, Mike.
-Listen Slava, I was thinking, we can't have you going back and forth on a bus for a day straight with no sleep for interviews.
I was fading in and out of reality.
-I'd have gone further to meet Angelo, Mike.
-You know, Frankie Randall used to live around Ft. Myers.....
I was so far gone I wasn't even sure if Marley said, "Randall," or "Swindle."
-Oh Yea.....
He could probably tell I was half asleep and barely listening.
-Call me tomorrow Slava. Bye.
I looked up and around the bus. Everyone, including the hot slim brunette in slim to none clothing, that I purposefully sat in front of, was asleep. I closed my eyes and dozed off again. Soon after inertia shoved me an inch or two forward.
We stopped. The doors opened, and the driver announced, "Ft Myers," before running to take a whiz or purchase a delicious refreshment.
The bus stood in the middle of a gas station parking lot, next to an Arby's and an Adult video store.
I sat up and took out my video camera and looked at a few portions of the interview with Dundee.

This is the second installment of interviews that Rocky Marciano conducted for his 1961 television program, Main Event. The 30 episode series featured guest artists, entertainers, sports figures and celebrities. Each program would include a brief interview with Marciano, followed by a classic fight, which Rocky and his guest would discuss between commercial breaks. In retrospect, the interviews have become classic on their own, and I wanted to show them without the accompanying fight films. This footage comes from a personal 16mm collection.
A Singer A Dancer A Comic
Of all the guests to appear on Main Event, there's only one who's still alive and still working today -- Tony Bennett. Here, Rocky and young Mr. Bennett discuss dealing with hecklers and how pre-concert preparation is like warming up for a fight. Gypsy Rose Lee and Marciano discuss seeing Tiger Flowers fight, and working with former champion Max Baer, who had died two years earlier. Finally Zero Mostel cracks up Rocky and the film crew, and gives Rocky a method acting lesson. More to come . . .
