This fine video, produced by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1995, is one that I have been showing my geology students at Southwestern, MiraCosta, Miramar and Mesa Community Colleges for years now. It is an excellent introduction to physical geology, especially plate tectonics, I'm uploading it to YouTube because the MiraCosta College DSPS Department was able to get this video closed captioned, as I have a hearing-impaired student enrolled in an online course that is about to start - thanks, Robert!
In a recent interview with Daniel McNamara, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey he stated "I don't know what to say frankly. It's incredible. I've never seen anything like it anywhere in the world." With that being said I am still attempting to link a connection from Oklahoma to the New Madrid Fault. The 6.8 earthquake offshore of Taiwan on 2/3/2016 was immediately downgraded by the USGS. There seems to be a concerted effort to eliminate the uptick in volcanic activity and earthquake activity associated with the new grand solar minimum.

An earthquake measuring 5.1 in magnitude hit the US state of Oklahoma in the Midwest on Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The tremor was registered just after 11 am local time (5 pm GMT). A 3.9-magnitude aftershock was reported 10 minutes later.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a scientific agency of the United States government. The scientists of the USGS study the landscape of the United States, its natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten it. The organization has four major science disciplines, concerning biology, geography, geology, and hydrology. The USGS is a fact-finding research organization with no regulatory responsibility.
A bureau of the United States Department of the Interior, it is that department's sole scientific agency. The USGS employs approximately 8,670 people and is headquartered in Reston, Virginia. The USGS also has major offices near Lakewood, Colorado (Denver Federal Center), and Menlo Park, California.
The motto of the USGS is "Science for a changing world."
Prompted by a report from the National Academy of Sciences the USGS was created by an act of Congress on March 3, 1879. It was charged with the "classification of the public lands, and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain." This task was driven by the need to inventory the vast lands added to the United States by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and the Mexican-American War in 1848.

The 2:41 a.m. earthquake on the border of Fremont and Union City occurred on the Hayward Fault at a depth of 5 miles. The epicenter was at a spot just north of the intersection of Niles Canyon Road and Mission Boulevard. The quake caused some BART delays early Tuesday while work crews checked the tracks, but appears to have caused no major damage. Computer simulations of earthquake shaking, replicating the quakes that occurred in 1811-1812 in the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ), indicate that future large earthquakes there would produce major, prolonged ground shaking. The 1811-1812 events were some of the largest in the United States since its settlement by Europeans, and the NMSZ spans portions of seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. Scientists from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the U.S. Geological Survey, San Diego State University, AECOM (formerly URS Corporation), and the University of Memphis simulated a set of 20 hypothetical, yet plausible earthquakes located along two currently active faults in the NMSZ. The U.S. Geological Survey on Thursday released a new report containing updated U.S. National Seismic Hazard Maps of earthquake risk for the next five decades. Computer simulations of earthquake shaking, replicating the quakes that occurred in 1811-1812 in the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ), indicate that future large earthquakes there would produce major, prolonged ground shaking. The 1811-1812 events were some of the largest in the United States since its settlement by Europeans, and the NMSZ spans portions of seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi.
Scientists from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the U.S. Geological Survey, San Diego State University, AECOM (formerly URS Corporation), and the University of Memphis simulated a set of 20 hypothetical, yet plausible earthquakes located along two currently active faults in the NMSZ. The hypothetical earthquake scenarios range in magnitude from 7.0 to 7.7, and consider various possible epicenters.
