Ernesto Beckmann Geisel, (Portuguese pronunciation: [eɾˈnɛstu ˈbɛkmɐ̃ ˈɡajzew]; 3 August 1907 – 12 September 1996) was a Brazilian military leader and politician of German descent who was President of Brazil from 1974 to 1979.
Ernesto Geisel was born in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul. His father was Guilherme Augusto Geisel (born Wilhelm August Geisel), a German teacher from Herborn. He immigrated to Brazil in 1883, at 16. The mother was the homemaker Lydia Beckmann, born in Brazil (Teutônia) to German parents from Osnabrück. In Bento Gonçalves, where he was raised, there were only two families of German origin- the Geisel and the Dreher- while the majority of the population was composed of Italian immigrants. About the contact with the local Italian immigrants during his childhood Geisel described the cultural contrasts between the strict and rigorous education that his German parents imposed compared to the freedom and more relaxed way of life that his Italian friends had, whom he admired. Geisel was raised in a Lutheran family (the grandfather was a priest) and he claimed to be part of a lower middle class, relatively poor family. At home, Geisel spoke German as well as Portuguese because his father, who spoke Portuguese so well that became a teacher of this language, did not want his children to speak Portuguese with a foreign accent. As an adult, Geisel reported that he was able to understand the German language, but was not able to write it and had some difficulty speaking it.

Vídeo-aula produzida, editada e narrada pelo Prof. e Historiador Cesar Mota que conta os principais fatos da História do governo militar, Presidente, General Ernesto Geisel que assumiu a Presidência do Brasil em 15 de março de 1974. Seu governo foi marcado pelo início de uma abertura política e amenização do rigor do ditadura militar brasileira, onde encontrou fortes oposições de políticos chamados de linha-dura.Foi lançado, em 1975, o Programa Nacional do Álcool (Proálcool) e assinado o acordo nuclear Brasil-Alemanha. Em outubro de 1975 ocorreu o episódio mais grave do governo do presidente Geisel; a morte sob tortura do jornalista Vladimir Herzog, no DOI-CODI do 2º. Exército em São Paulo. A morte de Herzog gerou uma grande comoção social de segmentos da classe média. Registrou-se, em maio de 1978, a primeira greve de operários metalúrgicos desde 1964, em São Bernardo do Campo, salientando-se, na ocasião, a liderança de Luís Inácio da Silva, o Lula, presidente do sindicato da categoria. No dia 31 de dezembro de 1978 revogou o AI-5. Para sucedê-lo na presidência da República, Geisel escolheu o general João Batista Figueiredo, chefe do Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI), comprometido com o projeto de liberalização política.

commentary: during a break in his formal talks with president giscard and other french officials on tuesday(27 april '76), the brazilian leader went to the famous arc de triomphe for a brief but solemn ceremony. there, president geisel laid a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier, and stood in silent memory of the millions of war dead in many spheres of military conflict.
despite numerous vocal protests over the brazilian leader's visit to france, mainly claiming brutal torture practices in the big south american nation, there were no public demonstrations in paris. at the arc de triomphe....ordered built by napoleon.....the proceedings were hushed and orderly.
adding color and tradition to the occasion was a unit of the republican guard dressed in full dress uniform.
geisel and france's president giscard conferred for more than an hour on tuesday diplomatic sources said both leaders agree that their nations would closely coordinate their moves in all key international negotiations. the sources said such a close cooperation of a leading continental european nation and the biggest latin american country might be of major importance in current international effort to reshape the world's commercial and monetary relations.

07/03/2013. El periodista y escritor brasileño Bernardo Kucinski ha presentado estos días en nuestro país su primer libro publicado en España: Las tres muertes de k. (Rayo verde, 2012). La obra trata sobre la desaparición de la hija de K., que lleva a éste a una incesante búsqueda en el contexto de la dictadura militar brasileña de Ernesto Geisel.
Kucinski, autor de numerosas novelas en el extranjero y profesor de Periodismo, ha trabajado también como asesor del Presidente de la República durante el primer mandato de Lula da Silva, así como en los medios The Guardian, BBC o la revista Euromoney.
Las tres muertes de k., que ha recibido la Mención de honor en el Premio Portugal Telecom de Literatura 2012, es la historia de una de las miles de desapariciones ocurridas en Sudamérica durante las décadas de los sesenta y setenta.
Tal y como explica el autor, en la obra "Todo es invención, aunque casi todo ha ocurrido". Kucinski ha hecho uso de la memoria y se ha inspirado en personas a las que conoce realmente, introduciéndolas en la narración e inventando los diálogos. De este modo, la ficción y la realidad se complementan en la historia.
El autor nos explica también que gran parte de lo que se ha dicho sobre su exilio es una leyenda.
El suyo fue un exilio voluntario, que realizó con motivo de un reportaje en el que denunciaba las persecuciones a ciudadanos brasileños. Además, afirma que la dictadura brasileña es menos conocida en España que otras dictaduras de América Latina, como la chilena o la argentina, y nos explica las razones por las que considera que es así.

STORYLINE:
The Israeli army demolished a five story building they claimed was being used as an explosives laboratory in Ramallah on Monday, as troops carried out extensive searches for millitants and weapons.
The Israeli military launched a large-scale raid on suspected militants in the West Bank city of Ramallah early on Monday, killing at least four Palestinians, including a nine year old boy and arresting dozens of other people.
The raid came hours before Israeli and Palestinian peace negotiators headed to Geneva to sign an unofficial peace plan.
Speaking during an interview with APTN, UN envoy to the region Terje-Roed Larsen said that the Geneva Accord was a positive step towards resolving final status disagreements in any future peace settlement.
Meanwhile in Gaza, the Islamic group Hamas joined with Islamic Jihad in demonstrating against the Geneva Accord.

STORYLINE:
The Israeli army demolished a five story building they claimed was being used as an explosives laboratory in Ramallah on Monday, as troops carried out extensive searches for millitants and weapons.
The Israeli military launched a large-scale raid on suspected militants in the West Bank city of Ramallah early on Monday, killing at least four Palestinians, including a nine year old boy and arresting dozens of other people.
The raid came hours before Israeli and Palestinian peace negotiators headed to Geneva to sign an unofficial peace plan.
Speaking during an interview with APTN, UN envoy to the region Terje-Roed Larsen said that the Geneva Accord was a positive step towards resolving final status disagreements in any future peace settlement.
Meanwhile in Gaza, the Islamic group Hamas joined with Islamic Jihad in demonstrating against the Geneva Accord.

Es ist schon ein paar Jahre her, irgendwann zwischen 9/11 und heute war es, da fiel dem Dokumentarfilmer Andreas Pichler mitten im immer drängenderen Geschrei um islamischen Terrorismus aus dem Bürgertum eine Geschichte ein: Er erinnerte sich an einen Jugendfreund, Michael Nothdurfter, seinen Jungscharleiter in der Südtiroler Provinz, Anfang der Achtziger. Michael war wohl etwas älter, er zog nach London, um sein Theologiestudium aufzunehmen, Andreas verliert in aus den Augen. Aber was da zu ihm dringt, erscheint sehr fremd: Michael Nothdurfter schließt sich den Jesuiten an, missioniert in Bolivien, fängt Feuer an der Theologie der Befreiung. Schließlich stirbt er in La Paz: Polizisten des bolivianischen Regime richten ein Blutbad, als sie versuchen, eine Geisel zu befreien: Commandante Miguel, wie der Südtiroler sich zum Schluss nannte, hatte, beseelt vom Heiligen Geist ebenso wie vom Marxismus, den Chef der lokalen Dependance von Coca Cola entführt.

LAHORE. At least 56 people, including women and children, enjoying Easter holiday at a popular park, were on Sunday killed and nearly 200 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore, the capital of Punjab province. A large number of people including Christians were present in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Iqbal Town area when the powerful blast occurred, leaving many in a pool of blood ... ....

After an international teaser leaked online earlier this week, AMC released the official season finale teaser trailer for "The Walking Dead," giving fans their first glimpse of the show's next big villain, Negan. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is joining the cast as the fan favorite from the comics who has been teased throughout season six. His entrance into the comics is a pretty iconic scene in itself ... Wow.
