They used the natural environment, protected caves in natural rock walls, which were accessible only by simple wooden ladders. For the past century, scientists from all over the world have investigated evidence that a gigantic meteorite crashed here, leaving behind it a huge crater: Meteor Crater. As the central and inner walls of the crater are similar to the landscape of the moon, preparation and training for the APOLLO space missions took place here. Located in North West Arizona is the 378 square kilometre National Park known as the ‘Petrified Forest’ with a surrounding desert which shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow. There’s the Agate Bridge, a huge fossilised tree trunk which spans twelve metres wide across a gorge and the amazingly beautiful Canyon De Chelly. Situated in the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Betatakin Ruins are the remains of historical dwellings which were carved into the rock by their original inhabitants from the 13th Century B.C. Wild West fans instantly recognise Monument Valley where, between colossal, 300 metre tall monoliths and sky-high rocky needles, John Wayne and countless other screen heroes fought off Indians and battled with ‘baddies’. A natural sculpture formed from undulating waves of stone, Antelope Canyon is a palette of colour which teases the eye. From the surface, a gaping crevice is the only means of access, tempting the curious to enter. In bold contrast, the Grand Canyon is 1,600 metres deep and 16 kilometres long, the most colossal gorge in the world. The sight of this gigantic natural wonder is the exciting climax of any trip to the magnificent and majestic land of Arizona.

In 1841, it was simply a plan of 20 streets on the 256 hectares (640 acres) of south central America, claimed by a Tennessee lawyer, John Neely Bryan. Today, it is the ninth largest city in the USA, and including its western neighbour of Fort Worth, it is the nation's fastest growing metropolitan area. Thriving at the bottom edge of America's Great Plains, Dallas has embraced dreamers and entrepreneurs for the better part of two centuries. Big D, as it's affectionately called, merges Southern hospitality with modern sophistication. Though the landscape looks different than at its humble beginning, the city still welcomes enterprising people who gather to share their grand ideas and stake claims on new frontiers. Dallas will always be remembered for one, if not two, shootings. The first and most shocking occurred on 22 November 1963, when President J F Kennedy was assassinated in downtown Dallas. The second shooting may only have been fictional but, when J R Ewing was shot by an unknown killer in the TV series Dallas in the early 1980s, fans across the world were devastated. Even today, the legend of J R remains strong, as does the legacy of President Kennedy. Today the city is a mecca for the banking, electronics and oil industries, as well as for dining, shopping, arts and entertainment. Large scale developments of urban lofts, apartments, condominiums, retail and both indoor and outdoor recreational facilities are springing up across the city. An impressive new Dallas Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2009 to vie with New York's Lincoln Center. New facilities and relevant attractions in and around this cultural centre continue to grow. Among things you probably didn't know about Dallas: The city has the largest urban arts district in the United States spanning 19 blocks. What's more, the Dallas Arts District has more buildings designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects in one contiguous location than anywhere else in the world. And Dallas' Fair Park, just a short distance east of the arts district and a district with numerous museums and venues, features the nation's largest collection of 1930s Art Deco, exposition-style architecture. Dallas offers true Southern hospitality, be it in a humble hideaway cocktail bar or in the Mansion on Turtle Creek, repeatedly and regularly ranked as one of the world's top hotels. And with a 10th of its workforce in the hospitality industry, Dallas is always happy to have y'all come on in and stick around awhile. Those wishing to explore further afield should take the busy freeway 30 miles to the west to the easy-going, cattle-driving, twin city of Fort Worth, home to a national historic district and a surprising stash of world-class art museums. San Antonio serves as the seat of Bexar County. The city has characteristics of other western urban centers in which there are sparsely populated areas and a low density rate outside of the city limits. San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commonly referred to as Greater San Antonio, the metropolitan area has a population of over 2.27 million based on the 2013 US Census estimate, making it the 25th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in the state of Texas. Growth along the Interstate 35 and Interstate 10 corridors to the north, west and east make it likely that the metropolitan area will continue to expand. San Antonio was named for Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is on June 13, by a 1691 Spanish expedition in the area. It is notable for Spanish colonial missions, the Alamo, the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, the Alamo Bowl, and Marriage Island. Commercial entertainment includes SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks, and the city is visited by approximately 26 million tourists per year, according to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau. The city is home to the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest such events in the country. The US armed forces have numerous facilities in San Antonio: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base (which constitute Joint Base San Antonio), and Lackland AFB/Kelly Field Annex, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley located outside the city. Kelly Air Force Base operated out of San Antonio until 2001, when the airfield was transferred to Lackland AFB. The remaining portions of the base were developed as Port San Antonio, an industrial/business park. San Antonio is home to six Fortune 500 companies and the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region.

The jury reached its decision Wednesday afternoon. Stay with KFDM and kfdm.com for updates. The trial began Monday. The jury began deliberating at about 3:05 Wednesday afternoon and returned with the decision at 3:55 p.m. Mike Lout says Shannon cried. Lout say Shannon told him "I'm ready to go back to work and serve the people of Newton County to the best of my ability." Lout says Shannon told him "justice was served. I faith in the system." Shannon also said "the truth came out." SAN AUGUSTINE (earlier report) - By Mike Lout KJAS/Rayburn Broadcasting Company The prosecution has rested and now defense is calling witnesses to testify in the trial of Newton County Sheriff Eddie Shannon, who is charged with making a terroristic threat against the members of the Newton County Commissioners Court. First to testify on Tuesday, in the second day, was Shannon's Chief Deputy Cynthia Hall who said that following a meeting of Commissioners Court, she heard the newly elected sheriff say "If I knew someone who was terminally ill, I would have them shoot them all." Hall said Shannon made the statement in late April of 2014 following a meeting where he became angry at the county officials over his plans to replace a wrecked patrol vehicle. The only other person to hear the alleged threat was Shannon's secretary Sherry Moore, who said that she heard the same statement. However, there may be a hole in the State's case in that during the cross, it was pointed out that in her original statement to Texas Ranger Joe Haralson, Hall said she heard Shannon say "someone who was mentally ill", instead of "someone who was terminally ill." Ironically, Hall said that she did not support the incumbent sheriff Joe Walker in his bid for reelection as it was rumored, but instead supported Shannon and was loyal to him. Moore told the jurors that she had already decided to quit and had already submitted her resignation before the alleged threat occurred. Moore said she did so because she "could not take it anymore and that it seemed to be one thing after the other." Moore said she felt Shannon was a ticking time bomb that she never knew what was going to happen next./ Moore said that the straw that broke the camel's back was when Shannon went to the area where the pictures of all of the past sheriff's of Newton County were and replaced the picture of former sheriff Joe Walker with a mug shot from Walker's arrest for a minor crime in 2012. Moore said she believed the act to be disgrace to Walker and Newton County. The defense has repeatedly pointed out that the key investigator in the case Texas Ranger Haralson is a former State Trooper who once patrolled the highways with one the victims of the alleged threat Newton County Judge Truman Dougharty and late in the day, Michael Marion, a longtime law enforcement officer and former prosecutor who is now an attorney in Orange who was called by the defense said that he believed Haralson's involvement in the case was a conflict of interest. Also testifying on Tuesday was Newton County District Attorney Courtney Ponchier, who said that she feared Shannon and even carried a gun to the Newton County Fair for her personal protection after she was informed that he had made the threat against the County Officials. Ponchier also said that she and Dougharty were the ones that decided to ask the Texas Rangers to investigate the incident.%0

Sheriff Eddie Shannon of Newton County is accused of threatening to have someone to shoot County Judge Truman Dougharty and other members of the Newton County Commissioners Court after he allegedly became angry and decisions they had made. Shannon reportedly made those threats following a meeting of the Commissioners Court in late April of 2014. Following the alleged incident, Shannon who had only been sheriff for a few months was indicted by a Newton County Grand Jury that charged him Terroristic Threat and a few days later the Commissioners Court put him on what they said was "administrative leave." Following a request by the attorneys for a change of venue, the trial was moved to San Augustine, where testimony began before a jury of 7 women and 5 men before visiting judge Joe Ned Dean of Groveton, who is presiding over the case.
