Tsamadou, Agios Konstantinos, Potokaki and Lemonakia are amazing beaches with exotic water, but due to its large size, Samos island has many lovely beaches, either organized or totally secluded. Few naturist beaches can also be found. Samos Greece is also famous for the tasty wine that is produced there since the ancient times. Pythagorion is located in the south eastern part od Samos. It has the facilities a visitor is looking for (international airport, port, marina, nice and clean beaches etc). It is a convenient base for those who want to visit the rest of Samos interesting sights (monasteries, castles, museums).

Samos (Greek: Σάμος) is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, south of Chios, north of Patmos and the Dodecanese, and off the coast of Asia Minor, from which it is separated by the 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi)-wide Mycale Strait. It is also a separate regional unit of the North Aegean region, and the only municipality of the regional unit.
In ancient times Samos was a particularly rich and powerful city-state. It is home to Pythagoreion and the Heraion of Samos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Eupalinian aqueduct, a marvel of ancient engineering. Samos is the birthplace of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, after whom the Pythagorean theorem is named, the philosopher Epicurus, and the astronomer Aristarchus of Samos, the first known individual to propose that the Earth revolves around the sun. Samian wine was well known in antiquity, and is still produced on the island.
The island was an autonomous principality from 1835 until it joined Greece in 1912.
The area of the island is 478 km2 (184.6 sq mi) 43 km (27 mi) long and 13 km (8 mi) wide. It is separated from Anatolia, by the approximately 1 mile (1.6 km)-wide Mycale Strait. While largely mountainous, Samos has several relatively large and fertile plains.

This is an extended version of "Samos 2009 - a fascinating experience", with additional photos, now containing 445 images! And in better 720p (HD) high quality too!
Samos, this unique island - a jewel in the blue eastern aegean sea - is located just a few kilometers away from the coast of Asia Minor. It is loaded with natural beauties and archeological sites and - in contrast to many other greek islands - Samos is gifted with large water reservoirs, partly due to forests and high mountains.
In addition, Samos is famous e.g.
- for its wines,
- the ancient mathematician/philosopher Pythagoras, who was born on Samos and lived there for many years,
- for the ancient philosopher Epicurus, founder of the school of philosophy called Epicureanism, who was born on Samos.
- the tyrant Polykratis, under whose reign, among other things, the famous city walls of the ancient city Samos were built
- the temple of the goddess Hera near Ireon and
- the big Kouros statue in the museum in Samos-Town.
Many different kinds of landscapes can be experienced on this island, e.g. large forests, deep valleys and canyons, herbs with incredible smells, unbelievable fresh and crystal clear water springs, brooks, cascades and even small waterfalls (e.g. in Potami, Amfilissos & Imvrasos vallley and near Ampelos village).
High mountains reaching up to 1150 meters (Karvounis, Ambelos) and 1443 meters (Vigla, Kerkis). With many caves and ancient quarries.
Lots of beautiful beaches all around the coasts of this island. Mostly with small pebbles, but some of them, especially in the south, are fine sanded, named psili ammos.
And many small villages, not only along the coast line. The more you get away from the coast, the more you will find the natural and rural life on Samos. Don't forget to visit one of the many panijiria during the summer season, the celebrations of the patron saints of the respective churches or chapels.
Samos has different wines. Not only the famous sweet wine! Besides the red, white and rosé Samos wines and the local Ouzo, try the Souma of Samos (in other places in Greece this spirit - containing about 40 % alcohol - is called Tsipouro!)
Come to beautiful Samos for holidays!
All photos were taken by me between 2005 and 2011.
The music that accompanies the presentation is sung and played by various groups/musicians living on Samos and Ikaria. Several of these musicians I know personally.
Music starts with two lively Nisiotika songs. Singers are Evi Morphou and Kyriakos Mavrikis.
Then follows an example for the energetic dance "Ikariotikos", played on violin by Leonidas Tsantiris. This dance "Ikariotikos" is unique and from Ikaria, nevertheless this music is very often played on the panigyria on Samos too!
This is followed by calm and soulful Rembetika-Songs, sung by singer/bouzouki player Jiannis Loulourgas from Pythagorion of Samos.
Near the end, there are several live recordings I made in taverns in Pythagorion, e.g. with the musicians Makis & Jiannis Karavasilis accompanying Jiannis Loulourgas.
Please note: as far as I know, CD's of these musicians are only available on the islands.

Πρώτο μέρος του μια μικρή σειρά από βίντεο σχετικά με τη φυσική ομορφιά των τοπίων πολλαπλάσιο υπό πάνω στο νερό πλούσιο σε Έλληνες του Αιγαίου ανατολικά της Ισλανδίας Σάμου.
Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του υλικού βίντεο καταγράφηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της άνοιξης στη Σάμο. (μήνες Μάιο και Ιούνιο, 2010 και 2011).
Υποστήριξη των τοπικών πληθυσμών στην Ελλάδα, π.χ. Σε Σάμο, την Ισλανδία, κατά τη διάρκεια αυτών των σκληρών οικονομικών φορές!

The trip began in Istanbul, then we went to Izmir, took a bus to Kusadasi, took a boat to Samos, then flew to Athens, stopped in Milan, flew to Barcelona, drove to Siges, flew to Vienna, and then took a tran to Budapest. Probably the best month of my life. In the video you hear 3 tracks that meant a lot to me at the time. I listened to these tracks while traveling and the seemed to guide me.

3rd: Pacific--Oliver Smith.
Looking at this video now, I think the order should be, the lost, pacific, and the found. Maybe i'll remix the music to see what looks better. In any case, enjoy the video/slide show.

El legado de Pitágoras es una serie de tres vídeos, de Canal Historia, que nos habla del conocimento de la geometría en el mundo antiguo y, en particular, del triángulo rectángulo y sus propiedades y aplicaciones en aquella época (como el Túnel de Eupalino, un túnel construido en el siglo VI a.C. en la ciudad de Samos para servir como acueducto) ... y en las siguientes civilizaciones. Observaremos cómo las antiguas civilizaciones conseguían llevar a cabo proezas arquitectónicas que antes se consideraban imposibles. Y todo gracias al teorema de Pitágoras.
Pitágoras de Samos (en griego antiguo Πυθαγόρας) (569 a.C.- 475 a.C) fue un filósofo y matemático griego considerado el primer matemático puro. Contribuyó de manera significativa en el avance de la matemática helénica, la geometría y la aritmética, derivadas particularmente de las relaciones numéricas, y aplicadas por ejemplo a la teoría de pesos y medidas, a la teoría de la música o a la astronomía. Es el fundador de la Hermandad Pitagórica, una sociedad que, si bien era de naturaleza predominantemente religiosa, se interesaba también en medicina, cosmología, filosofía, ética y política, entre otras disciplinas. El pitagorismo formuló principios que influyeron tanto en Platón como en Aristóteles y, de manera más general, en el posterior desarrollo de la matemática y en la filosofía racional en Occidente.
La isla de Samos (en griego Σάμος, Samos) es una isla de Grecia perteneciente al grupo de las islas Espóradas Orientales. Está localizada en aguas del mar Egeo, muy próxima a la costa de Asia menor, al sur de la isla de Quíos y al norte de la isla de Patmos y del archipiélago del Dodecaneso.

How to read the tabs in this video
0=open string. (For example, D0=open D string.)

( ) Notes in parentheses at the beginning of a tune or part indicate that this is a “pickup” to be played before the part and which lead smoothly into the part. Pickups create musical flow in tunes. It usually seems best to learn a tune without pickups and add them later, part of why I use the parentheses (also because in most cases, the pickup isn’t essential for the tune).
To make the tabs easier to read, the letters don’t change if you’re on the same string. Here's a step-by-step lesson on a Greek tune called The Girl From Samos. First I'll play a mid-tempo version of the whole thing. Then we'll slowly learn it, note by note, building notes into phrases, building phrases into quarters, until we have each part.
Rhythmically it’s tricky. If you really practice the first phrase (first quarter of the A part) it will make the rest easier.
