The Indian Army is the largest voluntary army and, next to China, the second largest army in the world. It is also a large conglomeration of values, experience, regimentation, customs, traditions, ethos and culture.
When combined it takes the shape of a multi-spectrum kaleidoscope, covering many centuries. In spite of its large size and diverse regional cultures, it is a shining example of unity in diversity.
As the nation celebrates its 62nd Army Day on January 15, its men in olive green look back at their outstanding achievements, with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction. These can be attributed to a glorious military history and a few core values of high significance.
During the span of its rich history, thousands of soldiers have fought hundreds of battles, worldwide, many of epic dimensions. Recourse to arms was only taken when peace was threatened.
In fact, the word 'peace' forms the very core of Indian philosophy, and compassion a benchmark. Coming to traditions, Indian soldiers hail from regions, where tradition and chivalry play a vital role in society.
These are based on, both, historical cum religious events and legends, where heroic figures become role models. Iconic warrior like Arjuna, Ashoka, Tipu Sultan, Chhattrapati Shivaji, Maharana Pratap, Tantia Tope, Rani of Jhansi, Ranjit Singh, Gulab Singh and Zorawar Singh, to name a few, have proved to be a great source of inspiration and are deeply etched in the psyche of many Indian soldiers.
This forms the bedrock of our regimental traditions, and many regimental customs, battle cries, crests, badges and so on are based on such traditions even today.
That apart, it is also a fact that the Indian Army has fought the maximum variety of opponents worldwide be they the Turks of the mighty Ottoman Empire, Germans, Italians, Japanese, foreign mercenaries operation alongside Belgian based Gendarmerie in Congo, armed tribals of the North West Frontier Province, the Chinese, Portuguese, Pakistanis, Somalis, Hutu rebels in Rwanda, various factions in Sri Lanka, foreign trained and armed terrorists in the states of Jammu and Kashmir and the North East.
As a corollary, bravery and valour are other related factors, which distinguish Indian soldiers worldwide. To cite a single example, during the two World Wars, next to the Royal British Army, Indian officers and soldiers earned the largest tally of Victoria Crosses, the highest award meted out for valour and bravery in battle -- totaling 42.
All this could instill a sense of pride and awe even amongst the staunchest skeptics.
Post independence, the Indian Army has once again risen to numerous operational challenges. These include four major wars fought along India's borders and many other localised conflicts: counter insurgency operations in the North Eastern States, the Kargil war of 1999 and the ongoing 'proxy war' in J&K;.
It has also operated in different terrain, altitudes and weather conditions, such as the sub zero mountainous and glaciated region of Siachen, icy plateaus of North Sikkim, deserts of Rajasthan, salt marshes of Gujarat, riverine and dense jungle terrain of the North East, island territories of Andaman & Nicobar and the Lakshadweeps.

Indian Army - US Army Combined Training !!!
Alaska — Soldiers from U.S. Army Alaska and the Indian army joined forces here Nov. 8 to kick off the field training exercise portion of Yudh Abhyas 2010 at Forward Operating Base Sparta.
They practiced troop leading procedures to ensure efforts between the two armies would be synchronized in preparation for a zone reconnaissance mission scheduled for the afternoon.
“We trained on anything that we thought we might come across during the mission. That way we are all in sync and can react to anything and make sure that everyone is on the same page,” said Staff Sgt. Juan Rangel, senior scout for Bravo Troop, 1st Squadron (Airborne), 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.
The instruction included training on movement techniques, principles of a zone reconnaissance, clearing techniques, react-to-contact, hand-and-arm signals, and other aspects of troop leading procedures.
“The Indian army is already well trained and has a good understanding of what we are doing because their procedures are similar. This provided them a little more knowledge on how we operate,” said Spc. Thomas Holcomb, a scout with Bravo Troop, 1-40th CAV.
Though most of the training was on U.S. Army troop leading procedures, the Indian army shared their techniques also.
“It’s a learning process. We teach them how we do things, and we also listen to how they do things,” Rangel said. “They give us their feedback, and if it works we can incorporate it into what we are doing. I know we will get something out of learning how they conduct operations, something that we can add to how we carry out our missions.”
Reinforcing leadership roles was a focus of the training, which included instruction on receiving and disseminating an operations order, conducting rehearsals, pre-combat checks and inspections.
“These guys are really smart, and they listen,” Rangel said. “So, it makes it easier on the leaders to have positive control over their men, and you get more training out of it.
“They are all very disciplined and catch on really quick. When you’re that focused on the mission it makes everything run smoother.”
Along with its operational importance, participating in a bilateral training exercise holds personal significance for some soldiers.
“I think it’s very important to have combined events like this,” Holcomb said. “Just working with the Indian army itself is a great experience. To actually interact with someone from a different culture is something that you can’t simulate.”
Yudh Abhyas is a regularly-scheduled bilateral, conventional-forces training exercise, sponsored by U.S. Army, Pacific and the Indian Army. The exercise is designed to promote cooperation between the two militaries to develop U.S. Army Pacific and USARAK relationships with India and promote interoperability through combined military decision making process, battle tracking and maneuvering forces, and exchange of tactics, techniques and procedures.

The Indian Army (IA, Hindi: भारतीय थलसेना, Bhāratīya Thalsēnā) is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. As of 2014, the Indian Navy has a strength of 58,350 personnel and a large operational fleet consisting of two aircraft carriers, one amphibious transport dock, 9 Landing ship tanks, 9 destroyers, 15 frigates, one nuclear-powered attack submarine, 14 conventionally-powered attack submarines, 25 corvettes, 7 mine countermeasure vessels, 47 patrol vessels, 4 fleet tankers and various other auxiliary vessels.
Indian Air Force
In its publication the Military Balance 2010, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimates that the Indian Air Force has a strength of 127,000 active personnel. However, various reliable sources provided notably divergent estimates of its strength over the years. Flightglobal (Flight International) estimates there to be around 1,588 aircraft in service with the IAF, according to its World Air Forces 2015 publication.
People's Liberation Army (Chinese Armed Forces)
The People's Liberation Army (PLA; simplified Chinese: 中国人民解放军; traditional Chinese: 中國人民解放軍; pinyin: Zhōngguó Rénmín Jiěfàngjūn) is the military of the People's Republic of China (PRC) under the leadership of the CPC. August 1 is celebrated annually as Chinese Workers and Farmers Red Army Day. The PLA consists of four professional service branches: the People's Liberation Army Ground Force, the People's Liberation Army Navy, the People's Liberation Army Air Force and the Second Artillery Corps. The PLAGF can trace its lineage from 1927, however it wasn't officially established until 1948. The President of India serves as the de jure Commander-in-Chief of the army while the de facto leadership lies with Minister of Defence, and it is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who is a four-star general. Two officers have been conferred the rank of Field marshal, a Five-star rank, which is a ceremonial position of great honour. The Indian Army originated from the armies of the East India Company, which eventually became the British Indian Army and finally the national army after independence. The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated in a number of battles and campaigns across the world, earning a large number of battle and theatre honours before and after Independence. The primary mission of the Indian Army is to ensure national security and unity, defending the nation from external aggression and threats, and maintaining peace and security within its borders. It conducts humanitarian rescue operations during natural calamities and other disturbances, like Operation Surya Hope, and can also be requisitioned by the government to cope with internal threats. It is a major component of national power alongside the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.[4] The army has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with China. Other major operations undertaken by the army include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot and Operation Cactus. Apart from conflicts, the army has conducted large peace time exercises like Operation Brasstacks and Exercise Shoorveer, and it has also been an active participant in numerous United Nations peacekeeping missions including the ones in Cyprus, Lebanon, Congo, Angola, Cambodia, Vietnam, Namibia, El Salvador, Liberia, Mozambique and Somalia. Indian Navy As of 2014, the Indian Navy has a strength of 58,350 personnel and a large operational fleet consisting of two aircraft carriers, one amphibious transport dock, 9 Landing ship tanks, 9 destroyers, 15 frigates, one nuclear-powered attack submarine, 14 conventionally-powered attack submarines, 25 corvettes, 7 mine countermeasure vessels, 47 patrol vessels, 4 fleet tankers and various other auxiliary vessels. Indian Air Force In its publication the Military Balance 2010, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimates that the Indian Air Force has a strength of 127,000 active personnel. However, various reliable sources provided notably divergent estimates of its strength over the years. Flightglobal (Flight International) estimates there to be around 1,588 aircraft in service with the IAF, according to its World Air Forces 2015 publication. People's Liberation Army (Chinese Armed Forces) The People's Liberation Army (PLA; simplified Chinese: 中国人民解放军; traditional Chinese: 中國人民解放軍; pinyin: Zhōngguó Rénmín Jiěfàngjūn) is the military of the People's Republic of China (PRC) under the leadership of the CPC. August 1 is celebrated annually as Chinese Workers and Farmers Red Army Day. The PLA consists of four professional service branches: the People's Liberation Army Ground Force, the People's Liberation Army Navy, the People's Liberation Army Air Force and the Second Artillery Corps. The PLA is the world's largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2,285,000 personnel, 0.18% of the country's population. These are based on, both, historical cum religious events and legends, where heroic figures become role models. Iconic warrior like Arjuna, Ashoka, Tipu Sultan, Chhattrapati Shivaji, Maharana Pratap, Tantia Tope, Rani of Jhansi, Ranjit Singh, Gulab Singh and Zorawar Singh, to name a few, have proved to be a great source of inspiration and are deeply etched in the psyche of many Indian soldiers.
This forms the bedrock of our regimental traditions, and many regimental customs, battle cries, crests, badges and so on are based on such traditions even today.
That apart, it is also a fact that the Indian Army has fought the maximum variety of opponents worldwide be they the Turks of the mighty Ottoman Empire, Germans, Italians, Japanese, foreign mercenaries operation alongside Belgian based Gendarmerie in Congo, armed tribals of the North West Frontier Province, the Chinese, Portuguese, Pakistanis, Somalis, Hutu rebels in Rwanda, various factions in Sri Lanka, foreign trained and armed terrorists in the states of Jammu and Kashmir and the North East.
As a corollary, bravery and valour are other related factors, which distinguish Indian soldiers worldwide. To cite a single example, during the two World Wars, next to the Royal British Army, Indian officers and soldiers earned the largest tally of Victoria Crosses, the highest award meted out for valour and bravery in battle -- totaling 42.
All this could instill a sense of pride and awe even amongst the staunchest skeptics.
Post independence, the Indian Army has once again risen to numerous operational challenges. These include four major wars fought along India's borders and many other localised conflicts: counter insurgency operations in the North Eastern States, the Kargil war of 1999 and the ongoing 'proxy war' in J&K;.
It has also operated in different terrain, altitudes and weather conditions, such as the sub zero mountainous and glaciated region of Siachen, icy plateaus of North Sikkim, deserts of Rajasthan, salt marshes of Gujarat, riverine and dense jungle terrain of the North East, island territories of Andaman & Nicobar and the Lakshadweeps.

The instruction included training on movement techniques, principles of a zone reconnaissance, clearing techniques, react-to-contact, hand-and-arm signals, and other aspects of troop leading procedures.
“The Indian army is already well trained and has a good understanding of what we are doing because their procedures are similar. This provided them a little more knowledge on how we operate,” said Spc. Thomas Holcomb, a scout with Bravo Troop, 1-40th CAV.
Though most of the training was on U.S. Army troop leading procedures, the Indian army shared their techniques also.
“It’s a learning process. We teach them how we do things, and we also listen to how they do things,” Rangel said. “They give us their feedback, and if it works we can incorporate it into what we are doing. I know we will get something out of learning how they conduct operations, something that we can add to how we carry out our missions.”
Reinforcing leadership roles was a focus of the training, which included instruction on receiving and disseminating an operations order, conducting rehearsals, pre-combat checks and inspections.
“These guys are really smart, and they listen,” Rangel said. “So, it makes it easier on the leaders to have positive control over their men, and you get more training out of it.
“They are all very disciplined and catch on really quick. When you’re that focused on the mission it makes everything run smoother.”
Along with its operational importance, participating in a bilateral training exercise holds personal significance for some soldiers.
“I think it’s very important to have combined events like this,” Holcomb said. “Just working with the Indian army itself is a great experience. To actually interact with someone from a different culture is something that you can’t simulate.”
Yudh Abhyas is a regularly-scheduled bilateral, conventional-forces training exercise, sponsored by U.S. Army, Pacific and the Indian Army. The exercise is designed to promote cooperation between the two militaries to develop U.S. Army Pacific and USARAK relationships with India and promote interoperability through combined military decision making process, battle tracking and maneuvering forces, and exchange of tactics, techniques and procedures.

The Indian Army (IA, Hindi: भारतीय थलसेना, Bhāratīya Thalsēnā) is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated in a number of battles and campaigns across the world, earning a large number of battle and theatre honours before and after Independence.

As of 2014, the Indian Navy has a strength of 58,350 personnel and a large operational fleet consisting of two aircraft carriers, one amphibious transport dock, 9 Landing ship tanks, 9 destroyers, 15 frigates, one nuclear-powered attack submarine, 14 conventionally-powered attack submarines, 25 corvettes, 7 mine countermeasure vessels, 47 patrol vessels, 4 fleet tankers and various other auxiliary vessels.

In its publication the Military Balance 2010, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimates that the Indian Air Force has a strength of 127,000 active personnel. However, various reliable sources provided notably divergent estimates of its strength over the years. Flightglobal (Flight International) estimates there to be around 1,588 aircraft in service with the IAF, according to its World Air Forces 2015 publication.
People's Liberation Army (Chinese Armed Forces)
The People's Liberation Army (PLA; simplified Chinese: 中国人民解放军; traditional Chinese: 中國人民解放軍; pinyin: Zhōngguó Rénmín Jiěfàngjūn) is the military of the People's Republic of China (PRC) under the leadership of the CPC. August 1 is celebrated annually as Chinese Workers and Farmers Red Army Day. The PLA consists of four professional service branches: the People's Liberation Army Ground Force, the People's Liberation Army Navy, the People's Liberation Army Air Force and the Second Artillery Corps. The PLA is the world's largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2,285,000 personnel, 0.18% of the country's population. The President of India serves as Commander-in-Chief of the army, and it is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who is a four-star General. Two officers have been conferred the rank of Field marshal, a Five-star rank, which is a ceremonial position of great honour. The Indian Army originated from the armies of the East India Company, which eventually became the British Indian Army and finally the national army after independence. The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated in a number of battles and campaigns across the world, earning a large number of battle and theatre honours before and after Independence.[4]
The primary mission of the Indian Army is to ensure national security and unity, defending the nation from external aggression and threats, and maintaining peace and security within its borders. It conducts humanitarian rescue operations during natural calamities and other disturbances, like Operation Surya Hope, and can also be requisitioned by the government to cope with internal threats. It is a major component of national power alongside the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.[5] The army has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with China. Other major operations undertaken by the army include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot and Operation Cactus. The Indian Army has a regimental system, but is operationally and geographically divided into seven commands, with the basic field formation being a division. It is an all-volunteer force and comprises more than 80% of the country's active defence personnel. It is the 2nd largest standing army in the world, with 1,129,900 active troops and 960,000 reserve troops.[6] The army has embarked on an infantry modernisation programme known as Futuristic Infantry Soldier As a System (F-INSAS), and is also upgrading and acquiring new assets for its armoured, artillery and aviation branches.

The Indian Army (IA, Hindi: भारतीय थलसेना, Bhāratīya Thalsēnā) is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. The President of India serves as Commander-in-Chief of the army, and it is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who is a four-star General. Two officers have been conferred the rank of Field marshal, a Five-star rank, which is a ceremonial position of great honour. The Indian Army originated from the armies of the East India Company, which eventually became the British Indian Army and finally the national army after independence. The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated in a number of battles and campaigns across the world, earning a large number of battle and theatre honours before and after Independence.[4]
