Pushkar Rajasthan. India (2006).
Pushkar (Hindi: पुष्कर) is a town in the Ajmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) northwest of Ajmer at an average elevation of 510 m (1,670 ft) and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage site) for devout Hindus. According to Hindu theology, the pond at the Katas Raj temple Near Choa Saidan Shah in Chakwal District of Pakistan has a theological association with Shiva; it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife, Sati. The story goes that when Sati died, Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds – one at Pushkara in Ajmer in India and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means raining eyes, in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Katas is derived. It is often called "Tirth Raj" – the king of pilgrimage sites – and has in recent years become a popular destination for foreign tourists.
Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Brahma with its creation.
Pushkar has many temples. Most of the temples are not very old because many temples were destroyed during Muslim conquests in the area. Subsequently, the destroyed temples were rebuilt. The most famous among all is the Brahma Temple built during the 14th century CE. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world. Other temples of Brahma include Bithoor in Uttar Pradesh, India; Khedbrahma in Gujarat, India; village Asotra near Balotra city of Barmer district in Rajasthan; Uttamar Kovil (one of the Divya Desams) near Srirangam, Tamil Nadu; Carambolim near Valpoi in Goa, Mother Temple of Besakih in Bali, Indonesia; and Prambanan in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters.
Pushkar is also famous for its annual fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) held in November.

Rajasthan is well known for its majestic forts, magnificent palaces and colourful culture. The land of the maharajas is also famous for well-laid gardens and ancient temples. It is not only famous for its rich culture but also for a fair which is held every year in the Hindu month of Kartik at Pushkar. This is the Pushkar mela.
The Pushkar Fair takes place every year ten days after Diwali - the Hindu festival of lights. The five to ten day long fair is celebrated on the auspicious occasion of Kartik Purnima and here people come to trade cattle including camels, horses, cows, goats, sheep etc. Once the trading of the animals is over, they are decked up with beautiful clothes and dazzling ornaments for public display.
Every year the fair is celebrated with great zeal by the people of Rajasthan. Owners of animals buy baubles to decorate their cattle to attract buyers.
People from all over India come to Pushkar to buy and sell high breed animal like camels and horses. One of the major attractions of this fair is the Marwari horse. The Marwari horse is considered to be one of the finest horse breeds of India. It is a rare breed of horse from the Marwar region or the area around Jodhpur. This breed is known for its inward-turning ear tips; it comes in all equine colours, although Marwaris with pinto patterns tend to be the most popular with buyers and breeders.
The Pushkar fair is the world's largest camel fair, and apart from buying and selling of livestock it has become an important tourist attraction. Its highlights have eventually become traditional game competitions like Kabaddi, Seven stones, Pitthu etc. Tourists are encouraged to be a part of these games and are seen enjoying such indeginous sports.
Another important factor of the fair that attracts travellers is the camel competition. Owners decorate their camels with colourful ropes, bells and other decorative items trying making their camels look the most attractive and eye-catching as the best looking camel wins the grand prize. Camel and horse dances are also very popular during the Pushkar fair.
Pushkar is not only famous for its animal trade, it is also known for its traditional cuisine. The cuisine of Rajasthan is very rich and has a unique flavour. The best known Rajasthani food is the combination of dal, bati and churma as well as the Missi roti. Being a religious destination, one may find only vegetarian dishes served at this fair. All the dishes are cooked in pure desi ghee or clarified butter and have mouth –watering spicy flavours.
Local acrobats are found all over at this fair. One can see a nine year old girl displaying her prowess at tight-rope walking, whilst balancing earthen pots on her head. Nearby is a five year old girl balancing on a bicycle wheel rim with a bamboo pole and moving along a rope.
The Pushkar mela or fair is a religious event as well. It is the only place where Lord Bhrama, of the Hindu holy trinity, is worshipped. It is believed that the holy Pushkar Lake has unique powers to heal all kinds diseases and that it is also capable of washing away ones sins. Being a spiritual destination, Pushkar is home to numerous small and big temples, all of which are a must-see.
The Pushkar fair is an experience that stays on in the memories of the travellers and leaves them craving to return here. Tourists can buy some traditional ornaments, beads, necklaces and other handicrafts as souviniers to take back from Pushkar. The great mela of Pushkar is a priceless treat for those who wish to see the true colours of Rajasthan.

Savitri Temple in Pushkar is a temple of world recognition. Savitri Temple is highly acclaimed by the tourists as well as by the locals Savitri Temple is the temple dedicated to the first wife of Lord Brahma. Savitri Temple Pushkar Rajasthan is located on the hill behind the Brahma temple. One has to climb a long series of steps to reach the shrine at Savitri Temple. It presents a panoramic view of the beautiful lake and the picturesque surrounding of the villages.
About Pushkar
Pushkar in Rajasthan is a sacred place for Hindus and has 400 astounding temples. The most important of them is the one dedicated to Lord Brahma. According to the famous and ruling legend in Rajasthan, every year for five days all the gods visit Pushkar and bless the devotees. That is why every year, an incredible number of devotees flock to the lake to wash away their sins. These five vital days also correspond to the biggest cattle fair of the country. A visit to the Pushkar fair is in fact a lifetime experience.
Pushkar had always been a place of great strategic importance. Pushkar had also been a favorite residence of the great Mughal. One of the first contacts between the Mughal and the British took place in Pushkar when Sir Thomas Roe met with Jahangir in 1616. In 1818 Pushkar got handed over to the British. It was one of the few places in Rajasthan which was directly under the control of British Government.
Pushkar is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. It is situated 14 Km from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams, pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus; it is often called "Tirth Raj" (the king of pilgrimage sites). In recent years it has become a popular destination for foreign tourists.
Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principle temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims decend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. One of the primary temples is the 14th century temple dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world[1], so Lord Brahma's temple in Pushkar is quite rare.
Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair.
The natural environment of Pushkar and the sacred lake has become increasingly degraded in the last few decades. The problems stem mainly from overdevelopment of tourist facilities and the deforestation of the surrounding area [2]
Please note that Pushkar, the pilgrim centre, should not be confused with Budha Pushkar (Old Pushkar), a town nearby. Budha Pushkar is famous for it's rose farming.
Pushkar is one of the oldest places of India. The date of its actual founding is not known, but legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation.
Ramayan mentions Pushkara and says that Vishvamitra performed tapa here. It further says that Apsara Menaka came to Pushkara to bathe in its sacred waters.
Mahabharata, while laying down a programme for Maharaja Yudhishthara's travel, says "Maharaja after entering the Jungles of Sind and crossing the small rivers on the way should bathe in Pushkara". And, per Vaman Purana, Prahlada on his pilgrimage to holy places visited Pushkarayana.
A Pratihara ruler of Mandore, Nahadarava, restored this tirtha in the seventh century. He got the place cleared and the lake restored by making an embankment on the side of the river Luni. He rebuilt old palaces and got built twelve dhrnashalas (resting places) and ghatas on three sides of the lake.
The sage Parasara is said to have been born here. His descendants, called Parasara Brahamanas, are found in Pushkar and the surrounding area. The famous temple of Jeenmata has been taken care by Parasara Brahmans for the last 1000 years. Pushkarana Brahamanas may also have originated here.

Wild Frontiers' Jonny Bealby presents a travel guide to Rajasthan and the north of India.
For Wild Frontiers Rajasthan and the North consists of the north-western states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and the Punjab, with Delhi and Agra thrown in for good measure.
Over half of all first time travellers to India visit Rajasthan and for good reason. With a plethora of magnificent monuments, its vibrant cities and fairy-tale heritage of Rajput palaces -- now converted into some of the most atmospheric hotels anywhere in the world -- Rajasthan is arguably India's most colourful state.
First and foremost there is the Golden Triangle; a natural routing that takes you from Delhi, with its great flight connections, through Agra and the essential Taj Mahal to Jaipur, the states capital and one of the most lively and evocative towns in the whole region. From here you can travel southwest through Pushkar, with its famous camel fair, Jodhpur, the Blue City, and on to Udaipur and the Venice of the East.
Or you could head out on the more remote but every bit as romantic desert routing, heading due west our of Delhi on what was one of the southern branches of the Old Silk Road to take in Bikanir, Nagaur and the most famous of all the desert town, Jailsalmer.
But there's also another way to go, to travel on a slower routing through the Rajasthani countryside, staying at some of the States most romantic rural palaces such as at Ramathra, Bhensrorgarh, Deogarh or Castle Bijaipur -- which is where I am now.
This really is quintessential India; the India of our childhood imagination, a calm quiet land where little of modern India appears, a place that is perfect for walking, cycling, riding or just relaxing.
Further afield there is the very under explored and deeply fascinating state of Gujarat. This is a region of fabulous temples, such as the amazing world heritage site at Palitana -- where I was two years back recceying our new trip to the region.
Gujarat is also home to some extraordinary landscapes and wildlife and some of the most diverse and interesting people in the country. Those of you a that are interested in textiles should make a special effort to come here as they are among the best the country, if not the world, can offer.
And finally another fascinating place to squeeze into this region is Amristsar. Holy city to the Sikhs, it is home to the amazing Golden Temple, the infamous Jahwallah Barg and the peculiar but utterly captivating, closing of the gate ceremony at the border with Pakistan. Which is something that has to be seen to be believed!
As I said at the start, most people coming to India will visit Rajasthan and the North -- and for very good reason. It offers everything the first timer or committed Indophile needs to have an amazing Indian experience.
Wild Frontiers has a number of small group tours to Rajasthan and the North, including our classic Taj, Temples and Tigers, our Desert Forts and Palaces and our more offbeat India in Slow Motion and with our experts in our office in London we can design bespoke travel to the region as well.
So come and see this amazing part of India; it'll stay with you forever.

Beginner's Guide to India
In this guide to India for beginners, Wild Frontiers founder Jonny Bealby talks about two perfect destinations for the first-time visitor - Rajasthan and Kerala...
In this guide to India for beginners, Wild Frontiers founder Jonny Bealby talks about two perfect destinations for the first-time visitor - Rajasthan and Kerala.
Rajasthan, Delhi and the Taj Mahal
Dealing with Rajasthan first, there are very good reasons why over half of all first timers travel here. Firstly it's close to Delhi where there are excellent flight connections and which is itself a fascinating city. A veritable tale of two cities Delhi combines the busy hustle bustle of the dramatic Moghul Old Town -- with its narrow alleys, its markets and mosques - with the sublime New Town, where quiet parks and tree lined avenues are peppered by some of the country's most magnificent architecture. From here you can travel easily, either by car or train, down to Agra where most go to visit the essential and truly amazing Taj Mahal.
And from here, either travelling via the tiger park at Ranthambore -- which does offer one of the best chances in the world to see a tiger in the wild -- making up the third stop in the triangle, there's the quintessential Rajput town of Jaipur with its bustling bazaar, its famous palace of the winds and the nearby Amber Fort. And that in itself makes a 7 to 10 day holiday.
But if you have a bit more time and want to scratch a little deeper into what is arguable India's most colourful state, from here there are a number of other routings that can take you to some of the Rajasthan's more wonderful offbeat converted Rajput palace hotels. Right now I'm at just such a place, called Castle Bijaipur, from which you can ride the Marwari Horses, go for bicycling rides or just enjoy a bit of relaxation by the pool. There are many such properties in this part of India which you can mix up with other famous towns like Pushkar, Bundi or Jodhpur.
And a great place to finish your trip to Rajasthan is the lake city of Udaipur. Sitting on the banks of the beautiful Lake Picola, Udaipur is a stunning place, packed with impressive palaces, temples and shops; it's easy to navigate and walk around and is often referred to as the Venice of the East. Not only is this one of my favourite towns in India it also has very convenient flight connections back to London, meaning you can spend your last night here -- having dinner at one of the wonderful rooftop restaurant -- and bounce through Delhi without being forced to spend an extra night there.
VTC: Rajasthan is India's most colourful state, it has most of the country's must see attractions, and some of her best hotels.
If you like to travel in a small group our Taj, Temples and Tigers would tick all these boxes as would our India in Slow Motion if you like your travels a bit more off the beaten track; And if you like to travel privately give us a call and one of our expert travel planners will be happy to help design a trip especially for you.
Kerala and the South
However, if something else, perhaps a little less frenetic appeals, then why not head south to the beautiful state of Kerala, which is where I am now.
Kerala is a stunning state situated at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and if Rajasthan and the north represents and great place for travel, Kerala, with its beautiful beaches, its temple culture and its meandering backwater cruises, offers the chance to truly relax and enjoy a more traditional holiday.
A great routing here is to fly in to Bangalore, drive down through Mysore -- with its colourful market and immense palace -- to the beach. There are a number of fabulous properties dotted up and down the coast, and in my option none is more special that Neeleshwar Hermitage. Here you can relax, walk along the beach, enjoy truly delicious cuisine and take a backwater cruise.
Using these old converted rice barges to float through the tranquil back water canals is a quintessential part of a trip to the south. And from here you can continue down the coast to another of my favourite towns, Cochin, a place that hasn't changed much from when my mother lived here as a small girl. This route makes for a perfect 10 day holiday, but if you have a bit more time and want to turn your holiday into more of a travelling experience, you can head up to the hill stations of Ooti and Munnar and on into temple filled Tamil Nadu.
Rajasthan and Kerala are the ideal locations for the inquisitive traveller coming to India for the first time. We have a number of small group departures for those that don't wish to travel alone, and a team of experts back in London to help those of you looking for a tailored experience ready to help you create your ideal trip.
wn.com/Beginner's Guide To India
I found a bunch of footage on an old hard drive from my travels from 2-3 years ago. The quality isn't up to par with what I do now, but I thought it was still fun to share:) Enjoy!
Also, be sure to check out Hemant Devara (as seen in this video) who taught me Bollywood dancing in Pushkar if you are ever there.

Take a tour of Pushkar Lake, site of Pushkar fair in India -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The state of Rajasthan, India, famously known for its desert and dry terrain, has been blessed with a sacred lake.
A site which has held great importance and reverence in Hindu mythology, Pushkar Lake is a crucial pilgrimage site.
Its tranquil and gentle waters have been an ideal place for meditation, especially in the early morning; a ritual which many still follow.
Being honored as a ''Monument of National Importance'' the ghats which surround the lake are burgeoning points for all ceremonial activities.
There are a total of 52 ghats which encompass the lake and according to scriptures, are endowed with exquisite powers.
In the foreground of the Aravalli hills, Pushkar Lake emanates serenity and sanctity which has been said to satiate the souls of pilgrims.
