The 14 temples of lord
Shiva at the ancient
Pandyan Dynasty by the hymns of '
Thevaram' - Given below in TamilAs found in the hymn as such :
"
Koodal Punalvayil Kutraalam
Aapanur
Aedagam Nelveli Ramesam - Aadaanai
Thenparankundram Suzhiyal thenThiruputhur Kanai
Van
Kodunkundram Poovanam."
Among the 14 temples, the temple at Thirukodunkundram ia also one among them, as found in the hymn of 'Thevaram'. Now it has been called as Piraan malai. The same had once been called as '
Parambu malai'.
"Eendu Ninrorkum thondrum siruvarai
Senru ninrorkum thondrum".
This is the song, in
Tamil language about the hill Piraan malai', which has been sung by the great ancient
Tamil poet 'Kapilar'.
The meaning of the above stanza has been :
The hill has been in sight to the people, not only to those who are standing near, but also to those who stand at very long distance. Thirukodunkundram or
Piraanmalai is in
Sivaganga district, in which it has been situated at the town-municipality of 'Thirupatthur', near the 'Singanpunari', another town near it. It has been situated at the distance of 42 k.m from the western direction of another well known town called '
Karaikudi'. From
Madurai, it has been situated at the north of 63 k.m and 45 k.m in the south west of another big town called '
Pudukottai'. The very nearest town has been '
Singampunari', which is at 12 k.m from the north.
Thirukodunkundram, also called now as Piraan malai is the big hill, which has been clearly visioned in the radial circle of 50 k.m around it.
Beneath this hill, the small town has been situated with serene beauty.
This temple has situated at the base of the hill in 30 Acres of land, as rarely seen with the three tier temple structure, known as 'Paathaalam', '
Boomi', and 'Kayilayam', that meant '
Down earth', '
Earth', 'Abode of lord Shiva -
Kailash'. This temple structure is never found in any where.
The three tier structure as :
Down earth - Paathaalam in Tamiil -
Arul mighu Thirukodunkundra Nathar temple.
Earth -
Boologam in Tamil - Arul tharu Bairava
Swami temple.
Abode of lord Shiva, the Kailash ♥-Kayilayam in Tamil - Arul tharu
Mangai Pagar temple.
This type of temple structure is never seen in any temple at any where in
India. One should worship this temple at least once in life.
It's easily access from all over the major towns of
Tamilnadu, like Madurai,
Trichy and other nearby towns like Karaikudi, Pudukottai,
Ponnamaravathi and
Singam punari by roads.
Jvara bakna murthy ~ fierce form lord Shiva - Hardly seen in any shiva temples.
To the west of the maha mantapam, and the south of the shrine, there lies the Jvarabakna murthy, a rare deity hardly seen in any Shiva's temple. This deity has been theruthra amsam, the fierce form of lord Shiva.
This ruthra amsam of lord Shiva, has three heads, four hands, nine eyes, and three legs. He had been created for, having fought with lord
Krishna, on behalf of His (Shiva's) staunch devotee Vanasuran, the son of king Mahapali.
Then lord Krishna had targeted lord Shiva with a unique weapon called 'Seethalasuram' (very cold habitat), in turn lord Shiva retaliated lord Krishna with His '
Heat suram' (deadly hot) which was having three heads, four hands, nine eyes and three legs, in the name of 'Jvara bakna murthy', which had deactivated the Krishna's 'Seethala suram'.
This had been vividly described in the book 'Shiva parakiramam'.
Again, who had been affected with the prickly heat, could worship him and could have been relieved from that disease.
