Monroe (comic strip)

Monroe was an American comic strip which appeared exclusively in Mad Magazine.

The strip was first published in "Mad" in their April 1997 issue, #356. Originally "Monroe" was a pure black-and-white comic strip, written by Tony Barbieri and originally drawn by Bill Wray. In April 2006 Wray left the magazine and the strip was continued from October 2006 on by Tom Fowler. Barbieri still wrote the scripts, occasionally assisted by Ryan Flanders. The last "Monroe" strip was published in issue #502, January 2010.

Concept

Monroe is a teenage boy with two antennae-like hairs on his otherwise bald head. Originally he was a preteen, but as the series progressed he became a teenager. Most gags center around Monroe failing to impress his schoolmates, the girls he adores and/or his parents. He often ends up being mocked or even beaten up by the local bullies. The style of humor can be described as black comedy and gross-out humor.

Monroe station (CTA Blue Line)

Monroe (also Monroe/Dearborn) is a subway station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Blue Line. It is located in the Chicago Loop, Chicago's downtown district.

History

Although the work on the station under Dearborn Street began in March 1939, the construction of the Milwaukee-Dearborn Subway and the station was suspended in 1941 because of wartime material shortages. Therefore commuters had to wait ten years for the station to open. Monroe opened on February 25, 1951, fourteen years after being ordered by the Chicago Rapid Transit Company in 1937.

In 1969, the stairs to the northwest corner of Dearborn Street and Monroe Street were closed to permit the construction of the First National Bank Building and Plaza (renamed the Chase Tower) after the completion of a new entry was added in the lower level of the tower to the station. Monroe station was completely refurbished in 1982, but was not designed to be accessible to the handicapped.

Monroe, Louisiana

Monroe (historically French: Poste-du-Ouachita) is the eighth-largest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. it is the parish seat of Ouachita Parish. In the official 2010 census, Monroe had a population of 48,815. The municipal population declined by 8.1 percent over the past decade; it was 53,107 in the 2000 census. After a recheck in 2012, the Census Bureau changed the 2010 population from 48,815 to 49,147. Mayor Jamie Mayo, however, maintains that the Monroe population is more than 50,000 and indicated that he will pursue a continued challenge to the count.

Monroe is the principal city of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the parishes of Ouachita and Union. The two-parish area had a total population of 170,053 in 2000 and an estimated population of 172,275 as of July 1, 2007. The larger Monroe-Bastrop Combined Statistical Area is composed of both the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Bastrop Micropolitan Statistical Area. The CSA had a population of 201,074 in 2000.
