Sierre Coach Crash:
The Sierre coach crash occurred on 13 March 2012 near Sierre, Switzerland, when a coach carrying school teachers and pupils crashed into a wall in the Sierre Tunnel. Of the 52 people on board, 28 were killed in the crash, including both drivers, all four teachers, and 22 of the 46 children. The other 24 pupils, all aged between 10 and 12, were injured, including three who were hospitalised with severe brain and chest injuries. The coach was one of three operated by the Aarschot-based Top Tours company and was transporting mostly Belgian school teachers and students from a skiing holiday in Val d'Anniviers back to their two schools in Belgium. It crashed at around 9.15 pm CET while travelling on the A9 motorway near Sierre, in the southern canton of Valais. It is Switzerland's second-worst road accident in history and the country's worst in a motorway tunnel.The cause of the crash is under investigation. Initial reports suggest the driver was not driving under the influence and was not breaking the speed limit.

Op 13/03/2012 gebeurde een tragisch verkeersongeval in Sierre. Een bus botste tegen de hoek van een veiligheidsnis in de tunnel, aan boord zaten 48 kinderen, 4 begeleiders en twee buschauffeurs. Het ongeluk kostte aan 22 kinderen, de vier begeleiders en de twee buschauffeurs het leven. Drie kinderen liggen in coma.
'In een tunnel nabij het Zwitserse Sierre heeft zich dinsdagavond een ongeval voorgedaan met een Belgische autobus. Daarbij kwamen 28 mensen om het leven. Sierre (German: Siders) is the capital of the district of Sierre in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It has a population of 14,355.
It is situated on the French–German language border of the canton of Wallis (Valais in French). As a German-speaking minority lives in Sierre, it counts as one of the three official bilingual towns in Switzerland.
Sierre is first mentioned about 800 as Sidrium, though a 12th century document refers to the village being founded in 515. In 1179 it was mentioned as Sirro and in 1393 as Syder.
The area around the modern town, especially Gerunden hill, was settled very early. Archeological sites on Gerunden hill have produced neolithic objects and grave goods (including a polished stone ax), Bronze Age weapons and jewelry, Early Iron Age objects and Roman era inscriptions, jars, jewelry and coins. A soapstone pot from the Early Middle Ages and a gold signet ring with the name Graifarius from the 6th century have also been found. Other sites on nearby hills and near the chapel of Saint-Ginier, the Château de Villa, the churches of Sainte-Croix, Grands-Prés, Muraz, Glarey and Bernunes have yielded up graves originating from the Bronze Age to the Carolingian era. In Grands-Prés there is a fire pit from the beginning of the Late Iron Age (5th–6th century BC).

Op 13/03/2012 gebeurde een tragisch verkeersongeval in Sierre. Een bus botste tegen de hoek van een veiligheidsnis in de tunnel, aan boord zaten 48 kinderen, 4 begeleiders en twee buschauffeurs. Het ongeluk kostte aan 22 kinderen, de vier begeleiders en de twee buschauffeurs het leven. Drie kinderen liggen in coma.
'In een tunnel nabij het Zwitserse Sierre heeft zich dinsdagavond een ongeval voorgedaan met een Belgische autobus. Daarbij kwamen 28 mensen om het leven. Ondertussen werd bevestigd dat er 14 kinderen uit Lommel gestorven zijn, 5 hebben er contact gehad met het thuisfront en over 3 leerlingen bestaat er nog onduidelijkheid. 22 van de 24 gewonden zijn geïdentificeerd. Het kabinet van minister van Volksgezondheid Onkelinx meldt nu ook dat een aantal gekwetsten er zeer erg aan toe is, 3 leerlingen liggen in coma.'
