In November 1922, after five years of searching, Howard Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon finally discovered the last resting place of Tutankhamun. His tomb was found directly beneath the tomb of Ramesses VI, which had been built much later on. As a result, the debris from the construction had been dumped into the entrance to Tutankhamun’s tomb – a stroke of luck for us today, since the boy king’s tomb does remained intact and hidden for more than 3,000 years.
Two figures standing guard indicated where the entrance to the burial chamber must be. On February 17th 1923, Carter began tearing down the wall that separated the antechamber from the mummy of the Pharaoh.
When the opening was large enough, Carter was able to peek through and spied a wall of gold. This later turned out to be a golden shrine. Between the shrine and the chamber walls there was just enough room to squeeze through.

KV5: Search for the Lost Tomb - BBC, 1998
In 1995, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Though the tomb numbered KV5 was already partially excavated as early as 1825, its true extent was only discovered by Kent Weeks and his team. During their exploration it gradually appeared to be the largest in the Valley of the Kings. Though probably started as an earlier tomb, it was later usurped and enlarged by king Rameses II as burial place for a number of his sons.

Kent Weeks | Exploring the Valley of the Kings
Kent Weeks, (BA, '63, MA '65, UW Anthropology), remarks on his work exploring and preserving the Valley of the Kings. This talk took place at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle on November 29, 2012. In 1995, as part of a project to map and photograph every tomb in an area known as the Theban Necropolis, Weeks made a discovery that attracted worldwide attention. Excavating a tomb where he expected to find a handful of chambers, he discovered a labyrinth of hallways leading to more than 100 rooms. The tomb, known as KV5, is the burial place of the sons of Ramesses II, one of the greatest pharaohs, who ruled Egypt from 1279 BCE until his death 66 years later.

In 1995, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Though the tomb numbered KV5 was already partially excavated as early as 1825, its true extent was only discovered by Kent Weeks and his team. During their exploration it gradually appeared to be the largest in the Valley of the Kings. Though probably started as an earlier tomb, it was later usurped and enlarged by king Rameses II as burial place for a number of his sons.

Kent Weeks, (BA, '63, MA '65, UW Anthropology), remarks on his work exploring and preserving the Valley of the Kings. This talk took place at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle on November 29, 2012.
In 1995, as part of a project to map and photograph every tomb in an area known as the Theban Necropolis, Weeks made a discovery that attracted worldwide attention. Excavating a tomb where he expected to find a handful of chambers, he discovered a labyrinth of hallways leading to more than 100 rooms. The tomb, known as KV5, is the burial place of the sons of Ramesses II, one of the greatest pharaohs, who ruled Egypt from 1279 BCE until his death 66 years later.

Ramesses III là pharaoh thứ nhì của Vương triều Ai Cập thứ 20, trị vì đất nước từ tháng 3/1186 - 4/1155 trước Công nguyên. Vị pharaoh này được đánh giá là người có nhiều uy quyền và có công ổn định vương triều trước sự hỗn loạn chính trị do cả thù trong, giặc ngoài. Tuy nhiên, ông rốt cuộc lại mất mạng do âm mưu tàn độc của chính những người ruột thịt.
Cái chết của pharaoh Ramesses III từng bị coi bí ẩn, do có nhiều điều còn chưa sáng tỏ. Song, nghiên cứu mới trên xác ướp hé lộ, ông đã bị nhiều kẻ tấn công ám sát cùng lúc, từ mọi phía với nhiều vũ khí khác nhau. Ngoài việc bị cắt cổ họng, pharaoh còn bị chặt đứt ngón chân cái.
Một cuốn sách mới, nhan đề "Scanning the Pharaohs: CT Imaging of the New Kingdom Royal Mummies" của nhà nghiên cứu Ai Cập học Zahi Hawass và chuyên gia X-quang Sahar Saleem đến từ Đại học Cairo, đã mô tả chi tiết khám phá trên.
Sử dụng công nghệ chụp cắt lớp vi tính (CT), nhóm nghiên cứu đã có thể tìm ra bằng chứng mới liên quan đến âm mưu sát hại Ramesses III. Nghiên cứu trước đây từng dẫn họ tới việc khám phá ra nguyên nhân cái chết của vị pharaoh này: một vết cắt bằng dao sắc bén vào cổ họng, cắt đứt khí quản và thực quản của ông. Tất cả kiến ông mất mạng ngay lập tức.
Hiện, nhóm nghiên cứu phát hiện thêm rằng, Ramesses III còn phải hứng chịu nhiều thương tích từ nhiều loại vũ khí khác nhau quanh thời điểm ông chết, ám chỉ vụ mưu sát có sự tham gia của hơn một người. Dựa vào hình dáng các xương ngón chân bị gãy, các chuyên gia xác định, ngón chân cái của pharaoh nhiều khả năng bị chặt đứt bằng rìu. Do vết thương này về mặt giải phẫu học ở cách xa vị trí thương tích chính khiến ông tử vong, nên thủ phạm gây ra nó chắc chắn là một kẻ khác...
