UPDATE (Jan 2015): It's been almost 7 years since I started, but my Sadako art piece has finally found a home in Hiroshima, Japan! It has become a permanent display piece in the Honkawa Kindergarten in Hiroshima (http://www.honkawa-youchien.jp/). It is the closest kindergarten to the Peace Memorial Park. I'm so excited to know that my art may inspire a new generation.

This is an art project I've created to memorialize Sadako Sasaki.
Contained within the fragile wings of these 2000 paper cranes is the portrait of Sadako Sasaki. A child victim of leukemia from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, Sadako folded paper cranes as a means to become well again. She eventually lost her battle from a disease caused by a war that was no fault of her own. Drawing from her dedication to overcome adversity and born from the hope to memorialize and inspire, each grayscale crane serves to allow Sadako's story of perseverance and optimism to live on. A single origami crane stands true as a universal symbol of peace, but when folded and grouped into larger quantities, their overwhelming inspiration seems to flourish.
Although hatred and greed abundantly affect much of our world, it seems that compassion and empathy are spread thin. These emotions, be it love or hate, are universal, and not exclusive to any one creed; their potential lives inside everyone. This message is echoed in the fact that a folded origami crane can blossom from any hand. It is hoped that the solemn stare of the girl that materializes from within the careful arrangement of folded paper helps the viewer to reflect on the potential that lives inside themselves.

Hiroshima (広島市, Hiroshima-shi) (
listen ) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, the largest island of Japan. The city's name, 広島, means "Wide Island" in Japanese. Hiroshima gained city status on April 1, 1889. On April 1, 1980, Hiroshima became a designated city. As of 2006, the city had an estimated population of 1,154,391. Kazumi Matsui has been the city's mayor since April 2011.
Hiroshima is best known as the first city in history to be targeted by a nuclear weapon when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped an atomic bomb on the city at 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, near the end of World War II.
History
Sengoku period (1589–1871)
Hiroshima was established on the river delta coastline of the Seto Inland Sea in 1589 by the powerful warlord Mōri Terumoto, who made it his capital after leaving Kōriyama Castle in Aki Province.Hiroshima Castle was quickly built, and in 1593 Terumoto moved in. Terumoto was on the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara. The winner of the battle, Tokugawa Ieyasu, deprived Mori Terumoto of most of his fiefs including Hiroshima and gave Aki Province to Masanori Fukushima, a daimyo who had supported Tokugawa.

Sadako Sasaki
Sadako Sasaki (佐々木 禎子, Sasaki Sadako, January 7, 1943 – October 25, 1955) was a Japanese girl who was two years old when the American atomic bomb Little Boy was dropped on August 6, 1945, near her home next to the Misasa Bridge in Hiroshima, Japan. Her grandmother rushed back to the house and was never to be seen again. Sadako is remembered through the story of a thousand origami cranes before her death, and is to this day a symbol of innocent victims of war.
Overview
Sadako was at home when the explosion occurred, about 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) away from ground zero. She was blown out of the window and her mother ran out to find her, suspecting she may be dead, but instead finding her two-year-old daughter alive with no apparent injuries. While they were fleeing, Sadako and her mother were caught in the black rain. Sadako grew up like any other girl, becoming an important member of her class relay team.
In November 1954, Sadako developed swellings on her neck and behind her ears. In January 1955, purpura had formed on her legs. Subsequently, she was diagnosed with acute malignant lymph gland leukemia (her mother referred to it as "an atom bomb disease"). She was hospitalized on February 20, 1955, and given, at the most, a year to live.

--- UPDATE (Jan 2015): It's been almost 7 years since I started, but my Sadako art piece has finally found a home in Hiroshima, Japan! It has become a permanent display piece in the Honkawa Kindergarten in Hiroshima (http://www.honkawa-youchien.jp/). It is the closest kindergarten to the Peace Memorial Park. I'm so excited to know that my art may inspire a new generation. --- This is an art project I've created to memorialize Sadako Sasaki. Contained within the fragile wings of these 2000 paper cranes is the portrait of Sadako Sasaki. A child victim of leukemia from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, Sadako folded paper cranes as a means to become well again. She eventually lost her battle from a disease caused by a war that was no fault of her own. Drawing from her dedication to overcome adversity and born from the hope to memorialize and inspire, each grayscale crane serves to allow Sadako's story of perseverance and optimism to live on. A single origami crane stands true as a universal symbol of peace, but when folded and grouped into larger quantities, their overwhelming inspiration seems to flourish. Although hatred and greed abundantly affect much of our world, it seems that compassion and empathy are spread thin. These emotions, be it love or hate, are universal, and not exclusive to any one creed; their potential lives inside everyone. This message is echoed in the fact that a folded origami crane can blossom from any hand. It is hoped that the solemn stare of the girl that materializes from within the careful arrangement of folded paper helps the viewer to reflect on the potential that lives inside themselves. -

2000 Paper Cranes - A Memorial to Sadako Sasaki
--- UPDATE (Jan 2015): It's been almost 7 years since I started, but my Sadako art piece has finally found a home in Hiroshima, Japan! It has become a permanent display piece in the Honkawa Kindergarten in Hiroshima (http://www.honkawa-youchien.jp/). It is the closest kindergarten to the Peace Memorial Park. I'm so excited to know that my art may inspire a new generation. --- This is an art project I've created to memorialize Sadako Sasaki. Contained within the fragile wings of these 2000 paper cranes is the portrait of Sadako Sasaki. A child victim of leukemia from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, Sadako folded paper cranes as a means to become well again. UPDATE (Jan 2015): It's been almost 7 years since I started, but my Sadako art piece has finally found a home in Hiroshima, Japan! It has become a permanent display piece in the Honkawa Kindergarten in Hiroshima (http://www.honkawa-youchien.jp/). It is the closest kindergarten to the Peace Memorial Park. I'm so excited to know that my art may inspire a new generation.

This is an art project I've created to memorialize Sadako Sasaki.
Contained within the fragile wings of these 2000 paper cranes is the portrait of Sadako Sasaki. A child victim of leukemia from the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, Sadako folded paper cranes as a means to become well again. She eventually lost her battle from a disease caused by a war that was no fault of her own. Drawing from her dedication to overcome adversity and born from the hope to memorialize and inspire, each grayscale crane serves to allow Sadako's story of perseverance and optimism to live on. A single origami crane stands true as a universal symbol of peace, but when folded and grouped into larger quantities, their overwhelming inspiration seems to flourish.
Although hatred and greed abundantly affect much of our world, it seems that compassion and empathy are spread thin. These emotions, be it love or hate, are universal, and not exclusive to any one creed; their potential lives inside everyone. This message is echoed in the fact that a folded origami crane can blossom from any hand. It is hoped that the solemn stare of the girl that materializes from within the careful arrangement of folded paper helps the viewer to reflect on the potential that lives inside themselves.

Flying over Tokyo was the best welcoming card we could get. As we landed in Narita Airport, we couldn’t wait to explore the bustling capital of Japan. It’s neon-lit skyscrapers shoulder to shoulder with buddhist temples and cherry blossom trees define the country. From our month in Japan, we decided to explore more of the country using our Japan Rail Passes and visit Osaka. Being based in Osaka for a week, we were able to visit the other cities of Kyoto, Kobe and Hiroshima via the Shinkansen bullet train.
In Kyoto, we visited the hillside shrine of 10,000 red gates – Fushimi Inari along with the bamboo forest in Arashiyama via the Hozugawa river cruise. In Kobe, we tasted some of the most tender beef in the world: Kobe Beef. In Hiroshima, we spent time at the national peace memorial museum to learn about the devastating effects of the nuclear bomb dropped at the end of World War Two; as well as visiting the shrine in the sea at Miyajima.

To most people, Hiroshima means just one thing. The city's name will forever evoke thoughts of 6 August 1945, when Hiroshima became the target of the world's first atomic-bomb attack. Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is a constant reminder of that day, and it attracts visitors from all over the world. But leafy Hiroshima, with its wide boulevards and laid-back friendliness, is a far from depressing place. Present-day Hiroshima is home to a thriving and internationally minded community, and it's worth spending a couple of nights here to experience the city at its vibrant best.
Atomic Bomb Dome
================
Perhaps the starkest reminder of the destruction visited upon Hiroshima in WWII is the Atomic Bomb Dome. Built by a Czech architect in 1915, it was the Industrial Promotion Hall until the bomb exploded almost directly above it. Everyone inside was killed, but the building was one of very few left standing near the epicentre. A decision was taken after the war to preserve the shell as a memorial.
The building has since become a haunting symbol of the city, and was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996. Try to wander past in the evening when it's quiet and the propped-up ruins are floodlit.

The main building of Hiroshima's premier museum houses a collection of items salvaged from the aftermath of the atomic bomb. The displays are confronting and personal – ragged clothes, a child's melted lunch box, a watch stopped at 8.15am – and there are some grim photographs. While upsetting, it's a must-see in Hiroshima. The east building presents a history of Hiroshima and the development and destructive power of nuclear weapons.
The museum is undergoing major renovations. The east building will be closed until spring 2016, at which point the main building will close until a 2018 grand reopening. During its closure, some items from the main building will be on display in the east building. Check the website for the latest developments.
Peace Memorial Park

Hugged by rivers on both sides, Peace Memorial Park is a large, leafy space criss-crossed by walkways and dotted with memorials. Its central feature is the long tree-lined Pond of Peace leading to the cenotaph . This curved concrete monument holds the names of all the known victims of the bomb. Also at the pond is the Flame of Peace , set to burn on until all the world's nuclear weapons are destroyed.
Look through the cenotaph down the pond and you'll see it frames the Flame of Peace and the Atomic Bomb Dome across the river – the park was planned so that these features form a straight line, with the Peace Memorial Museum at its southern end.
Just north of the road through the park is the Children's Peace Monument , inspired by Sadako Sasaki, who was two years old at the time of the atomic bomb. When Sadako developed leukaemia at 11 years of age, she decided to fold 1000 paper cranes. In Japan, the crane is the symbol of longevity and happiness, and she believed if she achieved that target she would recover. She died before reaching her goal, but her classmates folded the rest. A monument was built in 1958. Sadako's story inspired a nationwide spate of paper-crane folding that continues to this day. Surrounding the monument are strings of thousands of colourful paper cranes sent here from school children around the country and all over the world.
Nearby is the Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial . Many Koreans were shipped over to work as slave labourers during WWII, and Koreans accounted for more than one in 10 of those killed by the atomic bomb. Just north of this memorial is the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound – the ashes of thousands of unclaimed or unidentified victims are interred in a vault below.
There are other monuments and statues throughout the park, and plenty of benches, including along the riverside looking across to the Atomic Bomb Dome, making this a pleasant area to take a break and reflect.

Flying over Tokyo was the best welcoming card we could get. As we landed in Narita Airport, we couldn’t wait to explore the bustling capital of Japan. It’s neon-lit skyscrapers shoulder to shoulder with buddhist temples and cherry blossom trees define the country.
From the concrete streets of Tokyo and the temples of Kyoto to the port city of Nagasaki, a dance between the ultramodern and the traditional is always there.
A ride in the Shinkansen from the island of Honshu to the Kyushu revealed more than the guide book Japan. Over the course of 16 days we dined with locals in Fukuoka, explored caves amidst the crashing waves in Enoshima and played with friendly deers in Miyajima island.

A Chihuahua-mix puppy was found in a Las Vegas airport bathroom with a handwritten note detailing that the dog's owner was fleeing from domestic violence and had run out of options, according to CBS News. The dog was found last weekend in the airport bathroom with an anonymous note that read,"My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn't afford me to get on the flight." ... He probably needs a vet ... Abusers — they have no limits."....
