I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan on my brief trip to the city. The park is located at the center of the atom bomb blast. It was interesting to visit this place while the situation with the nuclear reactors unfolds in Fukushima further north because people keep calling it Japan's "second radiation disaster". Hiroshima The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. The two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on 8 May, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and the Republic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanese government ignored this ultimatum, and the United States deployed two nuclear weapons developed by the Manha...

On August 6, 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is museum located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, in central Hiroshima, Japan dedicated to documenting the atomic bombing that occurred with the additional aim of world peace. The museum was established in August 1955 with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall (now the International Conference Center Hiroshima). It is the most popular of Hiroshima's destinations for school field-trips from all over Japan and for international visitors. 53 million people had visited the museum fr...

"At 8:15AM on August 6, 1945 the City of Hiroshima fell victim to the world's first atomic bombing. The entire city was virtually leveled, over 140,000 lives were lost. Many of those who managed to survive suffered irreparable physical and psychological damage and still suffer the effects today. The Peace Memorial Museum collects and displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of that event, supplemented by exhibits that describe the city before and after the bombing and others that present the current status of the nuclear age. Each of the items displayed embodies the grief, anger, or pain of real people who were involved with the disaster. Having now recovered from that A-bomb calamity, Hiroshima's deepest wish is the elimination of all n...

Remarks by President Obama and Prime Minister Abe of Japan at Hiroshima Peace Memorial. "The world was forever changed here. But today, the children of this city will go through their day in peace. What a precious thing that is. It is worth protecting, and then extending to every child. That is the future we can choose -– a future in which Hiroshima and Nagasaki are known not as the dawn of atomic warfare, but as the start of our own moral awakening." Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Service Sunday, September 25, 2016 Ottawa, Ontario On September 24, 1998 the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. This National Memorial Day gives Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, which made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe. Unfortunately, our comrades are falling at an alarming rate; six to eight officers a year for the last twenty-three years. In 1978 the first Memorial honoured 14 officers. In 2016 the names of over 860 fallen officers are engraved on the Honour Roll tablets, which are now located in their new temporary location, a...
