Lānaʻi or Lanai (
/ləˈnaɪ/; Hawaiian: [laːˈnɐʔi] or [naːˈnɐʔi]) is the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is also known as the Pineapple Island because of its past as an island-wide pineapple plantation. The only town is Lānaʻi City, a small settlement. The island is somewhat comma-shaped, with a width of 18 miles (29 km) in the longest direction. The land area is 140.5 square miles (364 km2), making it the 42nd largest island in the United States. It is separated from the island of Molokaʻi by the Kalohi Channel to the north, and from Maui by the ʻAuʻau Channel to the east. The United States Census Bureau defines Lānaʻi as Census Tract 316 of Maui County. Its total population shrank from 3,193 as of the 2000 census to 3,102 as of 2010. Many of the island's landmarks and sites are reached by dirt roads that require a four-wheel drive vehicle.
There is one school, Lanai High and Elementary School, serving the entire island from Kindergarten through Senior in high school. There are no traffic lights on the entire island.

Hiroshima (広島市, Hiroshima-shi?) ( listen (help·info)) is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the largest city in the Chūgoku region of western Honshu, the largest island of Japan. It is best known as the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped an atomic bomb on it at 8:15 A.M. on August 6, 1945, near the end of World War II. Its name 広島 means "Wide Island".
Hiroshima gained city status on April 1, 1889. On April 1, 1980, Hiroshima became a designated city. The city's current mayor since April 2011 is Kazumi Matsui.
Hiroshima was founded on the river delta coastline of the Seto Inland Sea in 1589 by the powerful warlord Mōri Terumoto, who made it his capital after leaving Koriyama Castle in Aki Province.Hiroshima Castle was quickly built, and Terumoto moved in, in 1593. Terumoto was on the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara. The winner, Tokugawa Ieyasu, deprived Mori Terumoto of most of his fiefs including Hiroshima and gave Aki province to Masanori Fukushima, a daimyo who had supported Tokugawa.

Hi my foxes, today you'll be visiting the island of Lanai. Sixth largest of the Hawaiian islands. Lanai is 18 miles long, with a population of approximately 3000. There are no stop lights on the island and only a few main roads are paved, many landmarks are accessible only by dirt roads. If you plan to go exploring and get off the beaten path, rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Hi my foxes, today you'll be visiting the island of Lanai. Sixth largest of the Hawaiian islands. Lanai is 18 miles long, with a population of approximately 3000. There are no stop lights on the island and only a few main roads are paved, many landmarks are accessible only by dirt roads.
If you plan to go exploring and get off the beaten path, rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. However, if you're coming over from Maui on a day trip and just want to relax on the beach and walk around town (Lanai City), it's not necessary to rent a car.
After departing the ferry at the Manele Small Boat Harbor, it's a short 5 minute walk to Hulopo'e beach, a sunny white sand beach and marine preserve. It's an overall beautiful beach to relax on, snorkel, watch dolphins, enjoy a picnic, go for a hike along the coast... There are public restrooms, which were very clean and well maintained, might I add.
From the beach, you can walk up to the hotel overlooking the bay, the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele. It's plush, luxurious, and a room here will run you a cool $480 and up a night.
At the hotel, you can ask for a shuttle day pass, it's $10 per person and allows you to get on/off the shuttle all day. Though keep in mind, this is just general transportation, it only makes a few stops. It's not about to take you 4-wheeling or touring all the landmarks you want to see around the island. That's something you'll have to go for on your own. ;)
The Lanai landscape features contrasts ranging from white sand beaches with coconut palms swaying in the breeze to golden grasslands and rugged red earth to pine tree forests.
It's a small island but well worth exploring. This was a good day trip for relaxing. Though Michael and I always love an adventure, so I can see our next Lanai trip may involve 4 wheeling and getting a little dirty. ;D

In this travel video guide to Maui, Hawaii, I travel to Maui and start off by heading to Haleakalā National Park to watch the sunrise from the highest volcano in Maui. On this part of the island, clouds form at the base of the volcano, and as the sun rises, a myriad of colors form and provide an unforgettable visual experience.
Next I throw on a wet suit and hit the waves to learn how to surf -- my first time ever. Though I've ridden the New York City subway after happy hour before, I was still a little unsure about how my balance would be on a surfboard. Luckily, the surf instructor had a black labrador dog out on her board with us in case anything went terribly wrong.
Finally, I wrap up the day by heading to the beach with a ukulele to have a jam session with a local Maui resident and ukulele player, where we jam out to some Bob Marley as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, framed by the nearby islands of Moloka'i and Lana'i.
I then travel to Paia, the small, laid-back beach town on the northern coast of Maui, to track down the famed breakfast dish called the Loco Moco (rice, brown gravy and a hamburger patty topped with a fried egg).
Next I head north on the Hana Highway and take a hike into the lush forest to take a dip at Twin Falls, a small water hole in the middle of the forest fed by two island waterfalls. If this isn't classic Hawaii, then I don't know what is.
After picking up my friends at the airport, we jump onto a helicopter(!) to take an aerial tour of Maui and nearby Moloka'i. From this vantage point we visit dramatic sea cliffs up close and explore the interior portions of the islands -- places that few people ever see.
I started off my third day there by heading back up the side of Haleakala Volcano, then lunging my body of the side of the hillside (okay, I was paragliding). Finally, I travel to the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm, Maui's premiere (and only goat farm), where I am put to work feeding and milking the goats, and rewarded with an artisanal goat cheese tasting.
Then, with my trip coming to a close, I head to the nondescript restaurant Da Kitchen, one of the best places to try out classic Hawaiian cuisine, including Kahlua Pork, Teriyaki Chicken and of course, Spam.

In this travel video guide to Maui, Hawaii, I travel to Maui and start off by heading to Haleakalā National Park to watch the sunrise from the highest volcano in Maui. On this part of the island, clouds form at the base of the volcano, and as the sun rises, a myriad of colors form and provide an unforgettable visual experience.
Next I throw on a wet suit and hit the waves to learn how to surf -- my first time ever. Though I've ridden the New York City subway after happy hour before, I was still a little unsure about how my balance would be on a surfboard. Luckily, the surf instructor had a black labrador dog out on her board with us in case anything went terribly wrong.
Finally, I wrap up the day by heading to the beach with a ukulele to have a jam session with a local Maui resident and ukulele player, where we jam out to some Bob Marley as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, framed by the nearby islands of Moloka'i and Lana'i.
I then travel to Paia, the small, laid-back beach town on the northern coast of Maui, to track down the famed breakfast dish called the Loco Moco (rice, brown gravy and a hamburger patty topped with a fried egg).
Next I head north on the Hana Highway and take a hike into the lush forest to take a dip at Twin Falls, a small water hole in the middle of the forest fed by two island waterfalls. If this isn't classic Hawaii, then I don't know what is.
After picking up my friends at the airport, we jump onto a helicopter(!) to take an aerial tour of Maui and nearby Moloka'i. From this vantage point we visit dramatic sea cliffs up close and explore the interior portions of the islands -- places that few people ever see.
I started off my third day there by heading back up the side of Haleakala Volcano, then lunging my body of the side of the hillside (okay, I was paragliding). His history class was debating Hiroshima and the final stages World War II and his job was to argue that the world’s first nuclear bombing, an event carried out by American military forces that claimed more than 100,000 Japanese lives, was unjustified and unnecessary ... Still, it’s not easy to question the force used in Hiroshima and then in Nagasaki three days later ... That group steered clear of Hiroshima....
