"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

And there was no connecting actions and words
And the bright sunlight, the movement of white birds
The car ride home, smiling again
The light of my focus, the light of my bed
Theres no use calling, I knew what you'd say
I had no way of knowing what ended today
Words are familure I could not explain
Why the subject was always just out of frame
I was 16
I lived on Hazel Street
Protect me from my seam
And guide me with your heat
I was 16
I lived on Hazel Street
Touch me from the seam
And guide me with your heat
And ice forms their sheet
They're melting in the street
The ice forms their sheets
There was no connecting my actions with words
In the bright sunlight, the movement of birds
The car ride home, was blinded again
The light would not focus the light would not bend
There’s no use calling I know what you’d say
Over and over it ended today
Worlds lost their meaning and could not explain
Why the subject was always just out of frame
I was sixteen
I lived on Hazel Street
Protect me from the scene
And guide me with your heat
Ice forms in sheets
No one ever talked to me
Now I've forgotten how to speak
A problem with my chemistry
Now I cant sleep and I won't, eat
As soft as a strangers hand
I counted every grain of sand
I walked every inch of land, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
No one ever walked with me
I got so tired on my feet
I lay drunk on the bowery
Time never meant much to me
As soft as a strangers hand
I counted every grain of sand
I walked every inch of land, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
So strong, I know
I woke up in the middle of the night
I called out –
I called your name
Patiently, Patiently
I called out -
Why do I dream so often of his body
When his body will decay
His flesh will be fluorescent grey
His flesh will be fluorescent grey
Patiently, Patiently
You were my god in high school
People never really know.
Ollie off the sidewalk
Watch your brother bleeding
Take him by the hand and
Lead him to the slipstream

Do you recall waking up on a dirty couch in the grey fog
And the grey dog barking down the street?
Columns shake your feet
Beneath your feet.
Do you recall - your face was white as all?
Do you bone the sheets?
In the world
So many
Useless bodies
So much traffic
In the world
So many
Useless bodies
Please consider
All the couples kissing
The children missing
The corpses rotting
I got a message
Pretend you'll guess what it said
Drive alone
Drive straight home
I did as instructed
Closed my door and locked it
Disappearing ink
but the words still sting
I sat and wrote a letter
I described the weather
and the scene
Remembering...
I forget tomorrow
For all the sickness and sorrow
Disappearing ink
but the words still sting
What was I thinking?
when you were young
and your excitement showed
but as time goes by
does it outgrow
is that the way things go
forever reaching for the goal
forever fading black
comes a glow
walking free
come with me
far away
every day
My greatest fear, I fantasized:
The days were long, the weeks flew by
Before I knew I was awake
My Days were through, it was too late
My greatest fear, I organized
Into something more realized
And now what’s left I get to spend
Knowing that its about to end
My greatest fear I can’t decode
A cryptogram whose seeds weren’t sewn
My last few months I irised out
My vision blurred
There was no sound
bad circulation
become impatient
too long, we've waited
for an end, for me
shame on your doctors
oh, how they fooled us
oh, how they lured us
into their trucks, oh
cold cave in winter
ice swings (?)
ashes and cinder
caresed and (?)
done with the highlights
mirror wives and low lives
and reach for my light
Crucified on a cross
In front of all my closest friends
Crucified on a cross
In front of all my closest
Crucified on cross revealed
With finest wood and rope so thick
My arms, my wrists would bleed for weeks
My arms, my wrists would bleed for
Crucified on a cross
In front of all my closest friends
Crucified with backstage pass
come for me
you come for me
come for me
comfortably
you cover me
cover me
comfortably
comfortably
i had a drink
no longer to be free
i want only to see
four walls made of concrete
six by six enclosed
see me on video
oh oh oh
feed me twice a day
i want to fade away
away
come for me
cover me
come for me
come for me
you cover me
cover me
comfortably
comfort me
and after some time
i know i would go blind
but seeing only binds
the vision to the eye
i lose my voice i know
but i have nothing left to say
it is
(nothing left to pray)
wasted our lives
we wasted our time
i trickled out
creek would run dry
steam would rise
i tried
i tried
i tried
Take my hand and pray with me
My final days in company
The devil now has come for me
And helicopters circling the scene
And I pray for rest
Could you pray for us?
We know he loves you the best
We know he loves you the best
The light's inside my cave
I'm tired of my cave
Oh, these drugs, they play on me in these terrible ways
They don't pay like they used to pay
I used to make it day to day
No one cares for me
I keep no company
I have minimal needs
And now they are through with me
In the beginning the world was a map
Out through the back door and into the trap
Home is an echo reflecting a place
I disappeared then and without a trace
I was arranged to leave on that day
There were complications I’ve chosen to stay
I saw the curtains and it was the end
When one life is over a new one begins
Only when I dream but there's no way out
You learn to talk, you learn to shout
Focus on depth that was never there
Eliminate what you can't repair
Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Life just passing, flash right thru me
See thru the wind to awakened stream
Adjust your eyes to the state of things
Focus on depths that was never there
Nothing's easy nothing's fair
Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Nothing ever happened to me
Life just passing, flash right thru me
I never, saw it coming
waiting for something, for nothing
I never, saw it coming
I had dreams
That frightened me awake
I happened to escape
But my escape, would never come
Would never come (x4)
I had plans to go away for days
To try and escape pains
That haunt my dates (x4)
Winter, in my heart
It never stops
It never stops
Oh Winter(x4)
It never stops (x4)
So long to the
the days you grow sad of
And you
try to find
Not much for you to hold
The more
That you hold the
The more you feel alone
And wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
no more
So long to the
the days you come to know
So you had to
to get there on your own
to wait
to grow old
You're waiting
to grow old
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
no more
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
Until you can wait
All I've
seen
All I've
seen
Try to
describe it
In the time
of all of it
Try not to
come to bed
Warm and
I might slip
I might do
I might
Try to
describe it all
In your time
end it all
All I do
it may be not it
On and on
it could be my begining
All thru time
Kids drinking gin on their front lawn
Little kids see that man walking down, the dirt road
These kids see this guy
And they think of him dressed in flames
Kids walk behind, slowly stalk, that old man
To get older still (x4)
These kids followed him in, into his shed
where he turns on the radio, and smokes a cig
these kids cover him in gasoline, and they strike a match
I opened up my aim
I put cotton to flame
I saw the city lanes
Mirrored in falling rain
Seems like new
And so the skeletons
Had left their work undone
Nowhere to hide their skin
Back to the crypt again
We had some conflicts with prince erudite
Laid out on spreadsheets
And in the parking lot
Of my high school
Cheap acid, soft focus

We were captured by victorian vampires.

All these darkened hallways
Darkness, always it doesn't make much sense
Darkened hallways away from me, darling

To know there is a limit to what you can experience
These walls I know, I grew up here
I haunted a basketmaker's shop.
Spending days ripping pictures from magazines, taping
them to the walls of my prison.
I remember walking by the sand, each knob represented a
different frequency range,
and I remember holding the hand of the skeleton prince
and he swept me into his arms, and he, he had tremolo
deep in the back of his black eye sockets, and he said,
"Do you want to come away with me into the pitch black
pool?"
And I said, "I don't know, I don't know, I don't
know..."
Photocopied
The wind ripped through the trees and all the stained-
glass windows rattled.
I haunted a basketmaker's shop in 1927 -
And on the beach in the summer there were thunderstorms
constantly, and they were unpredictable, nobody knew
when they would come and nobody knew how long they'd
last.
Sometimes they'd only last five minutes, and sometimes,
weeks.
I haunted a basketmaker's shop because I had nowhere to
(one long weekend)
Stained-glass windows turning off and on and the
tremolo in the back dark corners,
cobwebs stripped, mildewed.
I remember acoustic guitars and bells, I remember the
cathedral.
I remember cassettes, cathedral.
I remember cassette cathedral.
Stay
I don't want you to stay
I need you to stay
In my room
Oh it's true
Stay
I don't want you to stay
I need you to stay
In my room
Oh it's true
I've looked
I've seen, I've seen
I've looked
I will always see, I've seen
For the miracles of youth
I've looked
I will always see, I've seen
When friends go away for a while
They always come back
But now, if friends
Go away for a while
Go to the shore and, pray for the sea.
Go towards the mirror and, pray that you'll see,
Someone else.
Downtown, go downtown.
Go to the waves of grain in the center of the state.
Go away.
Go to a parking lot, sit on the ground, and cry.
You'll never know why.
Start over.
Go to the ocean on a ship.
Wave goodbye to the waves and the frozen shit
that was in your heart.
So long.
Time slows when it goes away.
Go away.
Time Slows.
What direction should we choose
We’re lost and still confused
I walk into the sun
With you the only one
Who understood the ways
The hours became days
The weeks turn into months
We walk into the sun
So glad to have a guide
Less lonely for the ride
And should this car ascend
At least I’m with a friend
In space all things are slow
No sound with speakers blown
The silence fits the scene
The prince is now the king
Neon blurs my sight
I’m guided by strange lights
I’m rattled and I’m stunned
So I woke up
In a radio freeze
Occupied by a couple of girls
I knew from
Way back when, where
Oh, I had my face like the ocean
So I’d radiate but
Too much radiation
I walk around like a walker
And like a walker
Always choosing where to go
And where to be
Radiation
Too much radiation
So long loneliness
Two weeks
of misery
Capture my heart
and destroy me
Destroy my mind
and my body
Invade like a disease
and conquer me
My wild exchange
could not believe
I know I can't
stop breathing
Ive seen the light
I want to see
I hold the hand
that beckoned
Do you believe
in love at first sight?
Oh yes my son
I did the first time
Oh yes my son
I did the before I died
And now it does me no good
here on the other side
I know my ways
when other phase
A cold embrace
then all is waste
till i can find a new escape
Reborn again

I lived twice after my suicide
In the future or the past, I could not decide,
which one I hate the most
My body has become a sacramental host
When you're once the son of god,
and you're still unemployed
Offered up salvation,
surrender to the void
Perspectives crushed
I might be living in two places at once

No subside, I attempted suicide
I could not die, no matter how hard I tried
So I was bored
I wanted to die, so I spilled out on the ground
They put me in a hospital,
and they said I need to rest
After all now father knows best for all

I was spinning my big wheels
They were stuck and I was stuck to them
The night was clear
and I was queer
And I was only of age one year
I was on the cusp of a breakthrough
When they took me out
and stuck it in
It went so deep, man
it leaves scars you relate to
Are only burdens to me
I was a dream, a dream, a dream of my self
I was no longer in good health
Have you ever been here?
Or someplace else you can relate to
Out of fear,
out of trials and error
I was no longer mine
I had pantomimed
I had felt for lights
I had grown to find
I had no place in mind
When I began to drive
No destination
No destination
You can feel my pain?
You want to relate,
you want to stay
I was feeling real bad
And I had found all my problems
I had found all my problems
For a month I was punk
I remembered all my drunk
Younger days in a daze
I would spend my empty days
For a week I was weak
I was humbled on my knees
Pray to God: "Make it stop
Help me find some relief"
For a year I was queer
I had conquered all my fears
Not alone anymore
But I found it such a bore
For a month I was punk
For a month I had no luck
For a drunk I was young
For a kid right to the
For a month I was punk
I remembered all my junk
Younger days in a daze
I would spend my useless days
For a week I was weak
I was down on my knees
Pray to God: "Make it stop
My only boy couldn't leave his name [bewildered]
come on boy let me say that a
if you wanna be with me yeah
i can be your home away
Come on god hear my said prayer
if you can send me an angel
if you can't send me an angel
send me something else instead
Send my heart to the sea
oh the empty sea
but there's a light in the core
and there's nothing left no more
no more no
If you can't choose me
then you can't see
there's a light in my heart
and it' won't be there tomorrow
There's a man
there is a mystery whore
and in my dying days
i could never be sure
Well never mind
and then they take me away
and then they take you away
they'll never take me away
And in my head
there is something rotting dead
i can't compete with her
let me be released from this
I was sick, I was dead
Lay my head on the cement bed
I had a few good years
But they don't know
Come on now, don't leave me hanging
'Cause I wanna get down or I
I'll start believing what they said
In my heart, I don't believe it
And if I go ahead I know that you're leaving and I
I can't wait to see you go
I can't wait to see you go
In my heart, I feel so high
I wanna know the answers why
I ask so many questions, they let me go
They hang up the telephone
And if I die before I wake
I know that it must frustrate some people
That need a paycheck
when your range is off
when you call that complete
your finished task was a burden
I'll give you that to concede
if you wear a mask
if you wear a badge
if you're lost in the curtains of time
you'll be erased
sleep tight, gold night
protect my brain
I was bright, I was right
all the time
if you ever need to talk
I won't be around
if you ever need to fight for life
I'll make no sound
I completed your task
it was much too tough
your burdens now were twice removed
it must be rough
I use my golden light to find a way
your bones they were always, they were always in my way
the fire finds a way to completely erase
I followed you out
you threw up and you complained
and I bide my time, and I hide my glory away
in the basement room where you used to kneel and pray
if you need a friend now
better look some place else
you burned this bridge long ago
here's to your health
I'm a blue light, I'm a crippled coward
shining out in the night
Jumping
Your hands are like ice picks
You're the king of rich kids
Just once
Creation of deathly
You're the king of rich kids
Your dreams are x-rated
You're seduced by credit cards
Ponds like hands grow
Jumping
You're the king of rich kids
And your dreams are X-rated
Seduced by sports car, middle run
Jumping
You're the dream of rich kids
Tranced by basements
Box of, no, no
Box of old junk
We might of made a mistake But it's too late so... She's taking off her clothes and, I got a bloody nose and.. And theres nothing to say, in my room its too late so I had to make a choice and I chose the golden horse so
She might, she might, she might of gone too far x3
We might of made a mistake, but its too late now to to think about the past when you're living in the present and everybody today, they get frustrated when you're living in the past and, and its the present

I'm not mad about anything
you forced on me a hopeless dream
I've been looking for one true thing
too numb to see I've been sleepwalking
too horrified to see
wait and think it doesn't get you down
you're flying now but you'll come back down
and with both your feet on the ground
you'll look around, yeah you'll look around
too horrified to see
I've been looking for some harmonies
some words to sing that could really bring
the lonely-hearted some company
all the people that were just like me yeah
when a decade is spent searching
for something time will never bring
something starts to shut down inside
my body and my tired mind
too horrified to see
can't you see your heart, it's hard now
your heart, it's hard now
can't you see, we've grown apart now
I tried to keep him straight
ever since the day he was born
he came out a little late
maybe that's where frustration's born
my head was like a?
when they called me and said
"it's happened much too soon"
took two bullets to the brain
my kid brother, he was insane
was insane
when you find a way
call and tell me when the time's arranged
I had no cause to be awake
the phone rang, it was 3am
oh it was T.H.M.
where is T.H.M.
ever since I was born
I have felt so forlorn
I always knew this day would come
hey you lose and you win some
T.H.M.
T.H.M.
T.H.M.
Finding the fluorescence in the junk
By night illuminates the day
Finding ancient language in the blood
Fading a little more each day
And if you've got a lot of pain
You're at the how to speak
And if you got a lot of rain
Yeah it's still coming down in sheets
Neon rust is coloring the blood
Call upon the words to speak
Everything is the same as it was
But now there's nothing left to change
And if you got a ritual
We've drowned by rain
And if you memorize the words

Take me on the trip man I'll never get sick.
Take me wherever you go and I won't complain along the way.
Well, I've been waiting so long to say bye bye bye.
This town ain't gave me nothing but a bald head and trouble.
Well, if it can't be better if it can't be tried.
Doesn't matter much boy and I will dry my eyes.
Well, I could be your boyfriend though I could be your shame.
Until I see your eyes in the beltway (?), babe.
Let's go.
Hey, I came from the delta down to the plains.
Well, I came round from the delta right through the plains.
Right through the plains, right through the plains.
Right through the plains, right through the plains.
Well, I came from the delta down to the plains.
When I got back home there was nothing unarranged.
The woman that I love took another man.
When nothing ever ends up quite like what you planned.
They took me to the central station and I jumped on board of that bus the long way.
Time to take my trip; give me that ticket, man.
I forgot my book
At the fountain stairs
At a chapter on symmetry
Nobody cares
And I had a smoke
While I traced the squares
Put my finger to concrete
Felt the autumn air
When I look around
I can feel it spinning
Feet on the ground
Head on the ceiling
Sun on my shirt
Sweat on my hands
All falling in retrograde
Cancel all my plans
And I had to look
At the marching band
Skip across the pavement
Nobody's there
When I look around
I can feel it spinning
Feet on the ground
