What is human nature? Is human nature good or bad? Can human nature be good even if the world contains some notably bad people? Matthew Walker (Yale-NUS College) looks at the views of the early Confucian thinker Mengzi (Mencius). Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/Gqmq/
Many of the greatest thinkers the world has ever known were born in ancient China. Confucius (6th-5th century BCE) and his protégés, Mencius (4th-3rd century BCE) and Xunzi (4th-3rd Century BCE), were three of these great minds. Here are 15 wise quotes from the Confucian school of philosophy written by the three above-mentioned men. Quotes from Confucius were translated by Arthur Waley (Vintage Books, 1989). Quotes from Mencius were translated by D. C. Lau (Penguin Classics, 2004). Quotes from Xunzi were translated by Burton Watson (Columbia University Press, 1996). The Xunzi is an ancient Chinese collection of philosophical writings attributed to the 3rd century BC Realist Confucian philosopher Xun Kuang. In the Xunzi, Xun Kuang distinguishes what is born in man and what must be learned through rigorous education.Though Confucian, the Xunzi may also be considered a root canonical writing of the Chinese Legalist "School".Its essays are often critical of competing schools, such as Daoism and Mohism, as well as rival schools within Confucianism. Two rocks, a hammer
and some chains to
tie my hands
Two boots, the dirt, some food
some land to
dig it in
I cut the wood
tear down
build up for
moving in
A hole, the mud, a pipe
look out I'm
getting in
Wash your hands and clean the floor
Get some money for the store
Move the papers on your desk
Breathe some air into your head
Pop the bubble
concrete feet will
hold you here
Fall in the lake
then go fishing
Little Bear
Rest your bones
upon the seashore
Salt tears
I'll trade
this lucky key
the next time
you are near
Stop that buzzing over there
Stretch your bones and wash your hair
Change your strings
Dust your wings
Sing a song
Sharpen your sting
There's a baby in the bucket
of my eye
Plastic dolls holding Mary
will be enough
There are mermaids
they can't follow
on the shore
There are hermits
wet from swimming
drying off
Call the plastic wooden doves
Give them wings and they'll fly off
Lucky ones will get away
Smoking signals
