An inspiring story of a few remarkable heroes on the Island of Lesvos who helped almost half a million refugees in 2015 has been documented in a new short film called Ode to Lesvos, created by Johnnie Walker Storyline - an ongoing series that aims to find and tell the world’s most inspirational stories of human progress.
Throughout the past year, headlines from the region have naturally focused on the tragic aspects of the unfolding human drama in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. Ode to Lesvos shines a light on a lesser told story – the inspiring response of islanders who opened their hearts to the refugees and whose positivity drove them to rescue people from the sea, give shelter, and provide food and water.
Johnnie Walker is also supporting leading global organisation Mercy Corps, an organisation that helps people around the world survive and thrive after conflict, crisis and natural disaster. Since the Syria war began, Mercy Corps has helped more than 7.7 million affected by the crisis and expanded their programming to Greece and The Balkans in response to the migration crisis.

I'm an English teacher taking a year off to explore film/travel and this was my last trip of the year.
I have no volunteer experience but I wanted to see what was really happening with the refugee crises in Lesvos, Greece.
I booked a flight, rented a van, and headed for the beaches where I found a hotel and a great volunteer group to join.
Here are some of the "rabid dogs" and "terrorists" I met there.
I would love nothing more than to make this my everyday job. Different countries, different conflicts, different people...but in the end we are all in this together.

Two years on from the dramatic events of 2015, Jane Labous reports on the effect on the island of Lesvos from wars raging further afield, and gives us a glimpse into how the Greek islanders have pulled together to open their arms to those in need. Lesbos
Lesbos (/ˈlɛzbɒs/, US /ˈlɛzboʊs/; Greek: Λέσβος Lesvos, pronounced [ˈle̞zvo̞s]), sometimes referred to as Mytilini after its capital, is a Greek island located in the northeastern Aegean Sea. It has an area of 1,632 square kilometres (630 sq mi) with 320 kilometres (199 miles) of coastline, making it the third largest Greek island. It is separated from Turkey by the narrow Mytilini Strait and in late Palaeolithic/Mesolithic times was joined to the Anatolian mainland before the end of the last Ice Age.
Lesbos is a separate regional unit of the North Aegean region, and is one of five governing islands within it. The others are Chios, Ikaria, Lemnos, and Samos. The total number of islands governed by the North Aegean are nine: Lesbos, Chios, Psara, Oinousses, Ikaria, Fournoi Korseon, Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Samos. The capital of the North Aegean Region is Mytilene. The population of Lesbos is approximately 86,000, a third of whom live in its capital, Mytilene, in the southeastern part of the island. The remaining population is distributed in small towns and villages. The largest are Plomari, Kalloni, the Gera Villages, Agiassos, Eresos, and Molyvos (the ancient Mythimna).

Johnnie Walker
Johnnie Walker is a brand of Scotch whisky owned by Diageo that originated in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. It is the most widely distributed brand of blended Scotch whisky in the world, sold in almost every country, with annual sales of over 130 million bottles.
History
Originally known as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky, the Johnnie Walker brand is a legacy left by John "Johnnie" Walker after he started to sell whisky in his grocer's shop in Ayrshire, Scotland. The brand became popular, but after Walker's death in 1857 it was his son Alexander Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were largely responsible for establishing the whisky as a popular brand. Under John Walker, whisky sales represented eight percent of the firm's income; by the time Alexander was ready to pass on the company to his own sons, that figure had increased to between 90 and 95 percent.
In Britain prior to 1860, it was illegal to sell blended whisky. During that time John Walker sold a number of whiskies—notably his own Walker's Kilmarnock. In 1865, John's son Alexander produced their first blend, Walker's Old Highland.

Lesvos: How calm after the storm? [UPDATED]
The volunteer-led Greek Hellenic Rescue Team (HRT) is one of the organisations at ground zero of the refugee crisis in Greece. Two years on from the dramatic events of 2015, Jane Labous reports on the effect on the island of Lesvos from wars raging further afield, and gives us a glimpse into how the Greek islanders have pulled together to open their arms to those in need. She meets the members of the HRT, as well as those displaced by war and conflict on the small island gradually adapting to its changing reality.

I have no volunteer experience but I wanted to see what was really happening with the refugee crises in Lesvos, Greece.
I booked a flight, rented a van, and headed for the beaches where I found a hotel and a great volunteer group to join.
Here are some of the "rabid dogs" and "terrorists" I met there.
I would love nothing more than to make this my everyday job. Different countries, different conflicts, different people...but in the end we are all in this together.

Fishing and the manufacture of soap and ouzo, the Greek national liqueur, are the remaining sources of income.In the English-speaking world, the term lesbian is commonly (though not universally) used to refer to homosexual women. This use of the term derives from the poems of Sappho, who was born in Lesbos and who wrote with powerful emotional content directed toward other women.[13] Due to this association, Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, her birthplace, are visited frequently by LGBT tourists.[14] This use of the term is considered offensive to many Lesbos islanders to such a degree that, in 2008, a group of Lesbos islanders litigated unsuccessfully a court case against the LGBT community of Greece. The islander group had requested a legal injunction to ban groups from using the word lesbian in their names, which the petitioners claim violated their human rights as it is "insulting" and disgraces them around the world.[15][16]
