How to Configure Thunderbird mail client

In this tutorial I will show you how to configure your ]WE( account with thunderbird email client. It’s very simple and intuitive. As most mail client’s are similar in their structure this tutorial can be applied to almost any of them. But first:

So for those of you that look only for the specific information about the server setup:
Incoming: IMAP
Server hostname: laglab.org
Port: 993
SSL: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Normal Password

Outgoing: SMTP
Server hostname: laglab.org
Port: 465
SSL: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Normal Password

What is mail client?
“An email client, email reader or more formally mail user agent (MUA) is a computer program used to access and manage a user’s email”. Simple right? Most of the email clients these days support also RSS feeds, Calendars and other useful features.

So let’s get to it shall we?
First of, we need ]We( account (if you don’t have one yet, go to we.laglab.org/register and sign up). Next we need to get, and install thunderbird. Of course depending on operating system used there are different ways to obtain the software. All the linux users out there should refer to their Software centers to find and install thunderbird, while the others (MacOS, Windows should go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ for their version).

Now that we started thunderbird for the first time, we will be greeted with the window asking us whether we want to create new email account with provided service. We don’t need it so we select “Skip this and use my existing email” button.

Configure your e-mail account

For this tutorial I’ve created tester account.
Fill up:
Your name: (Name you want to use for that account)
Enail address: (obvious)
Password:
Remember password: (Whether or not automatically sign you in when starting thunderbird)

And hit continue

No you need to manually fill up the configuration of the email server. Follow the way it’s done on the screenshot and you will be good to go. Remember to put your full email address in the field :”Username”, otherwise you won’t be able to connect.

In case you can’t see the picture, or would like to use the “goodness” of copy paste, here are all the details you need to configure thunderbird or any other mail client of your choice:

Incoming: IMAP
Server hostname: laglab.org
Port: 993
SSL: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Normal Password

Outgoing: SMTP
Server hostname: laglab.org
Port: 465
SSL: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Normal Password

Username (incoming/ outgoing): yourname [at] laglab [dot] org

Now you just need to accept our certificate (please verify the fingerprint. Current one is SHA1 Fingerprint=FC:D8:2D:57:0E:98:F3:6D:3F:14:1B:C8:B1:9C:89:C2:BE:E7:BE:2B) and you are good to go.

I hope it was fairly simple and clear. In case you run into troubles, you can send email to we-admins [at] laglab [dot] org
