Shooting and discussing John Browning's first successful firearms design, the 1885 High Wall. This one is in .45-70. Really nice!
On February 26th, 1885, at Chancellor Otto von Bismarck's official residence in Berlin, the "Berlin Conference on Africa" came to a successful conclusion. After three months of negotiations amongst the leading diplomats from all the major European powers (and the US), the "General Act of the Berlin Conference" had been agreed. And a large part of Africa's subsequent fate had been set in motion.
For at a time when an estimated 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control, the purpose of the Berlin Conference had been for the Great Powers to establish rules amongst themselves for the colonization of Africa and the exploitation of Africa's resources. Including the division of territory, the drawing of maps, and the establishment of Congo -- as a personal possession of the Belgian King. Not surprisingly, no Africans had been invited to the Conference.
Using actual transcripts taken down at the time, BERLIN 1885: THE DIVISION OF AFRICA combines reenactments of the Conference proceedings and previously unexplored archival materials, with the insights of historians and scholars from six nations, to discuss the politics, implications, and legacy of the first international conference about Africa.

After developing a successful gas-powered two-stroke piston engine in 1873, Karl Benz focused on developing a motorized vehicle. His Patent Motorwagen (or Motor Car), introduced in 1886, is widely regarded as the first purpose-built automobile, that is a vehicle designed from the ground up to be motorized. Benz unveiled it officially on July 3, 1886 on the Ringstraße in Mannheim, Germany. The vehicle was patented with German patent number 37435, which Benz applied for on January 29, 1886.

Snouck's extraordinary collection of sepia-tinted images of Mecca in a bygone age have gone on display in Dubai ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that originally drew him to the heart of Islam.
Accompanied by crackling, eerie soundscapes captured by Snouck using Thomas Edison's newly-invented wax cylinders, the exhibition paints a very different picture from the ornate and built-up Mecca familiar to modern visitors.
Among the newly-restored platinum prints, one image taken from a nearby hillside shows the Kaaba, the instantly recognizable cubic building considered by Muslims to be the holiest place on the planet.
But though the galleried compound which surrounds it is echoed by Mecca's contemporary architecture, the sparsely-built city of Snouck's era bears only a passing resemblance, as do the rudimentary travelers' tents on the dusty plains outside the city.

The Battle of Abu Klea. British Troops beat back Mahdist fanatics in an effort to relieve General Gordon in January 1885. The battle lasted 15 minutes and by the end 65 British and 1,500 Mahdists lay dead. (I'm sorry no more comments can be accepted because of the amount of dickheads leaving moronic messages!)

This is rare footage of the world's first car's engine igniting & running. From Wikipedia: After developing a successful gas-powered two-stroke piston engine in 1873, Karl Benz focused on developing a motorized vehicle. His Patent Motorwagen (or Motor Car), introduced in 1886, is widely regarded as the first purpose-built automobile, that is a vehicle designed from the ground up to be motorized. Benz unveiled it officially on July 3, 1886 on the Ringstraße in Mannheim, Germany. The vehicle was patented with German patent number 37435, which Benz applied for on January 29, 1886. -

The Battle of Abu Klea. British Troops beat back Mahdist fanatics in an effort to relieve General Gordon in January 1885. The battle lasted 15 minutes and by the end 65 British and 1,500 Mahdists lay dead. (I'm sorry no more comments can be accepted because of the amount of dickheads leaving moronic messages!)

On February 26th, 1885, at Chancellor Otto von Bismarck's official residence in Berlin, the "Berlin Conference on Africa" came to a successful conclusion. After three months of negotiations amongst the leading diplomats from all the major European powers (and the US), the "General Act of the Berlin Conference" had been agreed. And a large part of Africa's subsequent fate had been set in motion.
For at a time when an estimated 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control, the purpose of the Berlin Conference had been for the Great Powers to establish rules amongst themselves for the colonization of Africa and the exploitation of Africa's resources. Including the division of territory, the drawing of maps, and the establishment of Congo -- as a personal possession of the Belgian King. Not surprisingly, no Africans had been invited to the Conference.
Using actual transcripts taken down at the time, BERLIN 1885: THE DIVISION OF AFRICA combines reenactments of the Conference proceedings and previously unexplored archival materials, with the insights of historians and scholars from six nations, to discuss the politics, implications, and legacy of the first international conference about Africa.

Jednym z najważniejszych postanowień konferencji było ustanowienie obszaru dorzecza Kongo własnością króla belgijskiego Leopolda II oraz ustalenia dwustronne pomiędzy europejskimi państwami w zakresie podziałów terytorialnych na spornych obszarach.
Na konferencji postanowiono o granicach większości kolonii w Afryce. W późniejszych okresach władza na poszczególnych obszarach zmieniała się, lecz granice w większości przypadków pozostały takie, jakie wtedy wytyczono.
