Today is the 13th of February and this day in 1258 the Mongols enter Baghdad, after a 2 weeks siege, capturing the city and ending the Abbasid Caliphate. The Mongol horde under Hulegu Khan, grandson of the great Genghis Khan, were on a campaign to extend their territory in the modern day middle east and the siege of Baghdad is considered one of the great battles in this campaign. The raid of the city from the Mongols was very bloody and destructive, as a Mongol raid usually was and the fall of Baghdad is often considered the end of the Islamic Golden Age where Baghdad was one of, if not the greatest culture cities in the world. The Mongol empire on the other hand was about to hit their own Golden Age and it was at this time the greatest empire in the world. The Mongol invasions of the Islamic world began in 1219 in Otrar, and the holocaust of Islam came with Chinggis Khan's grandson Hülegü, when Mongol forces subjugated all of Iran and sacked Baghdad, thus bringing to an end the Abbasid caliphate. Establishing rule over most of West Asia, including Iraq, Iran, Khorasan, the Caucasus, and Asia Minor, Hülegü (r. 1256--65) assumed the title of "Il-Khan," meaning lesser Khan, subordinate to the Great Khan ruling in Mongolia. This branch of the Mongol dynasty, which became known as the Ilkhanids (1256--1353), centered its power in northwest Iran. Although Mongol conquest initially brought devastation, over time the Pax Mongolica created an environment of tremendous cultural exchange. In particular, the art of the book, including illuminated and illustrated manuscripts of religious and secular texts, such as Tarikh-i Jahangushay-i Juvaini, became a major focus.

Mongol siege of Mosul, part I Medieval II Total War Antioch campaign battle (not historical). As an Antioch army is laying siege on Baghdad, the Mongols make their appearance near Mosul. Diplomats are sent with presents to appease them. Both Antioch and the Mongols have the same enemy, the Turks. An alliance seems a natural course. The Mongols accept the presents but merely canter from north to south and back north without making counter proposals. The Antioch armies take Baghdad and march towards Mosul. A screen of horsemen is sent to the desert north west of Mosul and the Antioch armies camp around Mosul and behind the mounted sentries. Antioch has 7 full armies: the Mosul garrison of mainly dismounted Hospitaller, Antioch and Edessan knights under Heliot Magliorie; a cavalry army under Philip, king of France, and Gerard, the Marshall of the Hospitallers; an army of light cavalry and mounted archers under Richart, used partly as a screen of scouts and patrols in the desert; and four other armies under generals Arthur, Robin, Christofle de Montfort and Emery de Champagne. There are also smaller armies under faction heir Charles the Mad, Robin de Toulouse, and Gerbert le Maingre. The Mongols have seven smaller armies under Khan Joshi, Khanzada Berkei, Hulegu, Kitbuqa, Abaqha, Kuo Kan, Yesugatai and Mengadai of Rus, a total of some 90 companies, all full strength with triple silver chevrons of experience rating. The two sides are approximately matched in florin value. However, the Mongols have 5 generals superior to any of the Antioch generals. Despite continuing presents from the Antioch side, the Mongols begin to attack the Antioch mounted scouts. Eventually, the Mongols decide to make an enemy out of Antioch. They march at night towards Mosul. The Antioch armies are arrayed in front of the city. Khan Joshi, backed by Hulegu, Kitbuga and Kuo Kan attacks the army of Philip, the King of France. In Philip's army is also Robin de Toulouse and Gerard, the Master of the Hospitallers. Philip falls back towards the monastery of St John the Baptist, where Robin is camped. The Mongols fail once again to get the cue, that Antioch is itself at war with the Turks and means no harm. They seem to perceive Philip's retreat as a weakness and attack him again. Khan Joshi, the Mongol faction leader, stumbles upon Philip while Hulegu, Kitbuga and Kuo Kan are some distance away. Philip's light cavalry launches diversionary attacks against his flanks, drawing the heavy Mongol cavalry to the sides. Khan Joshi rides on into the thick of the night while his army has gone this or that way. Philip blows his trumpet and the Antioch knights launch a lightning strike at the Khan's bodyguard. Within moments the Khan is surrounded and soon enough is also dead. His army flies off in disarray. Rather than chase them and risk an engagement with the entire Mongol horde, Philip's force takes the opportunity to disappear into the night. The same night, Mongol faction heir Berkei, launches an attack on Robin, whose army is camped outside the monastery of St John near Mosul. Robin has heard the fighting and is ready. Richart rushes up with a reinforcement of mainly light cavalry. Berkei is followed by Kitbuga the Wrathful and Kuo Kan but attacks on his own, before the other two generals have arrived. Robin has placed mangonels and catapults on the hill in front of the monastery and bombards the Mongols as the sodeer archers rain fire arrows on them. The Mongol archers waver but Berkei himself rushes ahead and charges up the hillside with the heavy Mongol cavalry in a very un-Mongol fashion. The Mongol cavalry breaks against the spears of the massed Hospitaller spearmen. Rather than run off or wait for Kitbuga and Kuo Kan, Berkei notices some stray Antioch infantry at the bottom of the hill and attacks them with his bodyguard. Instead of using the night to spin a trap around Robin, Berkei is walking into a trap himself. Richart's light cavalry attack Berkei's bodyguard. Berkei meets the same end as Khan Joshi. Robin and Richart keep their ground and brace for the attack of Kitbuga and Kuo Kan. Nemesis of the Mongols. The final battles. Captain Abashan is assassinated and captain Chagdu takes over the command of Hulegu's army. He is attacked by Emery de Champagne and Christophle de Montfort. Chagdu's army comes under a hail of catapult fire and as it begins to waver is charged by the Antioch cavalry. The Mongols are scattered. Emery and Christophle score a heroic victory after completing destroying Chagdu's Mongol army. The Mongols are down to two generals but insist on staying outside Mosul and continue their efforts to march in the direction of Antioch. Now they are under the leadership of general Yesugatai, while a much better general, Mengadai of Rus, is second in command. Now, however, the superiority of the Antioch side is massive. Philip, the Marshall of the Hospitallers and Arthur the Wrathful lead a massive force against them. Philip is at the head of the cavalry and Arthur is at the head of the infantry. Two dozen siege engines are also brought along under captain Christofle (a different person than Christofle de Montfort). The Mongols, rather than retreating, stay put and suffer the full weight of the massed catapult fire. Mengadai of Rus is killed by a catapult shot. Instead of pulling off, Yesugatai leads the heavy Mongol cavalry into a vain charge against the Antioch infantry. Philip instantly blows his trumpet and his cavalry counterattacks. The Mongols are overrun. The cavalrymen die at the points of the Antioch spears and the archers are trumpled under the hooves of Philip's cavalry. Yesugatai runs but is stopped by light Antioch horsemen who had taken positions at the rear of the Mongol army. He becomes surrounded by the Antioch cavalry and is taken prisoner. He is ransomed for 11400 florins. However, by now the Mongols are a shadow of their former selves. All their armies have been defeated and only remnants remain scattered around Mosul. All 8 and 9 star Mongol generals are dead. Yesugatai himself, now the Mongol faction leader, was easily the worst of the Mongol generals. He is allowed to live for his ransom potential, leading a pitiful shadow of an army through the deserts north of Mosul. CengizHan'ın akrabası olan Baycu Noyan , Cormagon Noyan'ın yerine 1241 yılında Hazar Denizi' in batısında yer alan Mugan'daki orduların başına getirilmiştir ve çok geçmeden Anadoludolu Selçukluların iç karışıklıklarından,Anadoludaki birliğin zayıflamasından yararlanarak Ermeni ve Gürcülerin de bulunduğu 30.000 kişilik bir orduyla Anadolu'ya , Erzurum önlerine gelmiştir. Ordusu ile Erzurum’a kadar gelen Noyan , kısa bir süre içinde Erzurum başta olmak üzere Tokat,Kayseri,Sivas gibi birçok Anadolu şehrini işgal etmiş , yağmalamıştır.Anadolu’yu terk ederken arkasında yıkılmış , siyasi birliği bozulmuş bir Selçuklu devleti bırakmış ve çok geçmeden Selçuklu Devleti Moğollara bağlı bir devlet haline gelmiştir. Moğol ordusu adına yaptığı birçok işgalden sonra 1246 yılında Güyük Han tarafından görevinden alınıp yerine başka bir komutan getirilmiştir. Kendisini görevden alan Güyük Han'ın ölümü üzerine Möngke tarafından 1251 yılında yeniden İran'daki Moğol ordularının başına getirilmiştir ve Anadolu'ya bela olmaya devam etmiş ; 1256 yılında Konya'ya kadar ilerleyip kuşatma sırasında Konya halkı tarafından ona sunulan altınlar sayesinde şehrin sadece surlarını yıkarak kuşatmayı bitirmiştir.1258 yılında da Bağdat'ın alınmasına yardımcı olmuştur. Nafsu itu seperti bayi, kalau dibiarkan menyusu sampai tuapun akan terus menyusu.” a. Muqaddimah Siapa tak kenal Burdah? Kalangan pesantren, masyarakat tradisional dan kaum Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (khususnya) tentu sangat karib-akrab dan bahkan mendarah-daging dengan syair/qashidah ini. Sekurang-kurangnya sudah delapan abad bergulir tradisi Burdahan dilestarikan secara turun-temurun dari generasi ke generasi. Namun demikian banyak, bahkan sangat banyak yang tidak tahu dan mungkin mengenal Burdah sebatas kulit luarnya saja. Apa sebab? Karena Burdah terlalu dikultuskan secara berlebihan tanpa pernah dikaji dan dikritisi secara ilmiah. Konsekuensinya, Burdahan sekedar menjadi penyemarak tradisi dan ritus budaya yang kapan pun akan segera digeser oleh modernisasi, westernisasi, globalisasi dan isasi-isasi produk Barat lainnya. Lebih-lebih ketika kaum Puritan semakin gencar mengharamkan dan membid’ah-dhalalahkan shalawatan. Na’udzubillah. b. Imam Al-Bushiri ra. dan Prisma Pemikirannya ”Siapa saja yang perjuangannya dikuatkan oleh kharisma Muhammad, pasti menciutkan nyali musuh. Seekor singapun akan ketakutan, meski sedang berada di sarangnya.” Syair Burdah yang berjumlah 163 bait ditulis oleh seorang pujangga bernama Abu Abdillah Syarafuddin Muhammad bin Sa’id bin Hammad bin Muhsin bin Abdillah bin Shanhaj bin Mallal Al-Bushiri (lahir 1 Syawal 608 H/1213 dan wafat pada 691 H/1295 M). Ia lahir tepat 103 tahun setelah meninggalnya Imam Al-Ghazali (w. 1111 M) di Bushir, desa kecil di Mesir. Ketika itu Mesir, Irak, Syiria dan beberapa negera lainnya berada di bawah kekuasaan dinasti Abbasiyah yang mulai redup. Klimaksnya pada 1256 khalifah al-Musta’shim meninggal dalam sebuah serbuan besar-besaran tentara Mongol yang dipimpin Hulegu Khan. Akhirnya dinasti yang berkuasa selama lebih kurang lima abad itu runtuh bersama peradaban dan khazanah keilmuan, karena aset-aset pendidikan dan perpustakaan di Baghdad dijarah habis-habisan kemudian diluluh-lantakkan oleh pasukan Hulegu Khan . Belum lagi kudeta di Mesir pada setiap pemimpin Bani Ayyub dan dinasti Mamluk, serta serangan tentara Salib yang tak kunjung usai sejak 1096 M. Berbagai pergolakan sosial-politik itu tidak begitu saja meredupkan tradisi akademik dalam Islam, salah satunya adalah jasa sultan Qalawun (w. 1290) dari dinasti Mamluk (1250-1517) yang mengambil inisiatif membuka hubungan multilateral di bidang ekonomi dan pendidikan dengan Byzantium, Kostantinopel (Istambul-Turki) dan India. Implikasinya Mesir kala itu berkibar sebagai mercusuar ilmu pengetahuan salah satunya dengan semakin menterengnya Universitas al-Azhar. Ia ngaji dan mendapatkan geneologi keilmuannya dari beberapa ulama seperti Abu Hayyan, Abu Fath bin Ya’mari dan al ‘Iz bin Jama’ah al Kanani al Hamawi, dan belajar Thariqat Sufi pada Syeikh Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzily. Al-Bushiri hidup dan tumbuh ketika sastra Arab mencapai puncak keemasannya. Para khalifah sangat memanjakan para penyair, seringkali mereka diundang untuk menyanjung dan mengapresiasi jasa sang Khalifah, tentu saja dengan imbalan materi. Namun demikian Al-Bushiri tergolong penyair yang miskin dan banyak sekali anaknya, sehingga ia kerap berganti profesi bahkan tak jarang ia menjadi Rapsodi (penyair-penyanyi) yang mengetuk belas kasihan dari satu raja ke raja lainnya untuk menghidupi keluarga. Di hari tuanya, khususnya ketika ia mengalami sakit kronis dan kelumpuhan yang berkepanjangan, bahkan ketika banyak dokter dan tabib didatangkan, namun Al-Bushiri tak juga sembuh, semua itu disesalinya sepanjang tahun di usia uzurnya dengan menulis syair dan pepujian untuk Nabi Muhammad Saw. Itulah Burdah. Selain Burdah, judul aslinya adalah Kawakib al-Durriyah fi Madhi Khair al-Bariyyah, Al-Bushiri memiliki banyak lagi proses kreatif yang dituangkan dalam karya-karyanya, antara lain: al-Qashidah al-Muhammadiyah, Hamziyyah fi Madhi al-Nabawiyyah (427 bait), Dzakhr al Ma’ad fi Wazn Banat al-Su’ad, Al-Shalah ’ala Khayr al-Bariyyah, Hukm al-Hawa, Katab al-Masyib,’Asy ba’d Maut, Mustakhdimun wa Syayathin dan Fadhluk Awwal dan lain-lain.

Hüseyin Nihâl ATSIZ / Ötüken, 23 Temmuz 1966, Sayı: 31 – 32 Fakat Çengiz’in “Moğol” topluluğu etnik değil, tıpkı “Osmanlı” tabiri gibi siyasî bir isimdir ve aralarında Türkçe konuşan veya Türk olan boylar ve uruklar da vardır. Osmanlı padişahlarından II. Murad zamanında, hicrî 843’te yazılıp tarafımdan yayınlanan bir tarihî takvimde Çengiz, Ögedey, Güyük, Mengü, Hülegü, Abaka, Keyhatu gibi Müslüman olmayan Çengizli kaanlar rahmetle anılmıştır. (Osmanlı Tarihine ait Tarihî Takvimler, s. 92-94, İstanbul 1961, Küçük aydın Basımevi). Yani On Beşinci Yüzyıl ortalarına kadar Türkiye’de aydınlar arasında bir Tatar düşmanlığı, Müslüman olmayan Türk’e düşmanlık diye bir şey yoktu. Bu müsamahakârlık Doğu Türkleri’ni veya Tatarlar’ı yabancı saymaktan, Çengiz Hanedanını millî bir hanedan saymaktan ileri geliyordu. Umumî bir müsamaha olsaydı aynı hoşgörürlük Bizanslılara, Ermeniler ve Gürcülere, Batılılara karşı da gösterilirdi. Türkler’le Moğollar aynı kökten gelen iki kardeş millet olmakla beraber Çengiz Han, Moğol değil, Türk’tü. Çengiz’in Türklüğü tarihî geleneklerin dışında tarafsız çağdaş Çinlilerin tanıklığı ile de sabittir. Profesör Zeki Velidi Togan, 1941’de yayınladığı “Moğollar, Çengiz ve Türklük” adlı küçük eserinde, (s. 18) ve 1946’da yayınladığı “Umumî Türk Tarihine Giriş” adlı büyük ve değerli eserinde (s. 66) Çengiz Kaan’ı 1221’de ziyaret eden Çao-hong adlı bir Çin elçisinin verdiği bilgiyi nakletmiştir. Bu elçi, Çengiz’in eski Şato Türklerinden indiğini gayet açık olarak belirtmiştir. Şatolar ise, bilindiği üzere eski Gök Türkler’den inen büyük bir uruktur. Çengiz’in tipi hakkındaki tarihî bilgiler de (uzun boy, kumral saç, beyaz ten, yeşil göz) eski Gök Türk kağanlarınınkine uymaktadır. Çengiz’in aile adı olan “Börçegin”, “Börü Tegin’in Moğolca söylenişinden ibaret olduğu gibi “Çengiz” kelimesi de “Tengiz” yani “Deniz” kelimesinin Moğolca söylenişinden başka bir şey değildir. Türkçe’de “t” ile başlayan kelimelerin Moğolca’da “ç” ile başladığını Altay dilleri uzmanları söylemektedir. Çengiz’in ailesi hiç şüphesiz eski Türk devlet geleneğine uygun olarak çok eski zamandan beri Moğollardan bir kısmı üzerinde (belki de Moğollaşmış Türkler üzerinde) beğlik eden bir Eçine Hanedanı kolu idi. Bu hanedanda Türk geleneklerinin devam etmekte olduğu Çengiz’in oğullarından Çağatay ve Ögedey’in adlarından gözükmektedir. “Çağa” ve “Öge” bilindiği üzere, Türkçe kelimelerdir. 9- Aksak Temir Bek’in bir Barlas gibi olması ve Barlasların Moğol uruğu sayılmasında Temir’in Türklüğüne engel değildir. Temir’in ailesi de Çengiz ailesinin bir kolu olup Barlas uruğu üzerinde beğlik etmiştir. Ruslar tarafından Temir’in mezarını açmak suretiyle yapılan incelemeler onun da uzun boylu ve beyaz tenli olduğunu ortaya koymuştur ki eski Arap ve Fars edebiyatlarındaki Türk tavsifine tamamen uygundur. Sections of Syria were held by French, English, Italian and German overlords between 1098 and 1189 AD during the Crusades and were known collectively as the Crusader states among which the primary one in Syria was the Principality of Antioch. The coastal mountainous region was also occupied in part by the Nizari Ismailis, the so-called Assassins, who had intermittent confrontations and truces with the Crusader States. Later in history when "the Nizaris faced renewed Frankish hostilities, they received timely assistance from the Ayyubids." After a century of Seljuk rule, Syria was largely conquered (1175–1185) by the Kurdish warlord Saladin, founder of the Ayyubid dynasty of Egypt. Aleppo fell to the Mongols of Hulegu in January 1260, and Damascus in March, but then Hulegu was forced to break off his attack to return to China to deal with a succession dispute. A few months later, the Mamluks arrived with an army from Egypt and defeated the Mongols in the Battle of Ain Jalut in Galilee. The Mamluk leader, Baibars, made Damascus a provincial capital. When he died, power was taken by Qalawun . In the meantime, an emir named Sunqur al-Ashqar had tried to declare himself ruler of Damascus, but he was defeated by Qalawun on 21 June 1280, and fled to northern Syria. Al-Ashqar, who had married a Mongol woman, appealed for help from the Mongols. The Mongols of the Ilkhanate took the city, but Qalawun persuaded Al-Ashqar to join him, and they fought against the Mongols on 29 October 1281, in the Second Battle of Homs, which was won by the Mamluks. In 1400, the Muslim Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur Lenk (Tamurlane) invaded Syria, sacked Aleppo and captured Damascus after defeating the Mamluk army. The city's inhabitants were massacred, except for the artisans, who were deported to Samarkand Timur-Lenk also conducted specific massacres of the Aramean and Assyrian Christian populations, greatly reducing their numbers. By the end of the 15th century, the discovery of a sea route from Europe to the Far East ended the need for an overland trade route through Syria.
