Mount Yasur is an active volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu, 361 m (1,184 ft) high above sea level, on the coast near Sulphur Bay, southeast of the taller Mount Tukosmera, which was active in the Pleistocene. It has a largely unvegetated pyroclastic cone with a nearly circular summit crater 400 m in diameter. It is a stratovolcano, caused by the eastward-moving Indo-Australian Plate being subducted under the westward-moving Pacific Plate. It has been erupting nearly continuously for over 800 years, although it can usually be approached safely. Its eruptions, which often occur several times an hour, are classified as Strombolian or Vulcanian.
The glow of the volcano was apparently what attracted Captain James Cook on the first European journey to the island in 1774. Today the mountain is a sacred area for the John Frum cargo cult. Members of the cult revere John Frum, a deified messenger who foretold the bringing of wealth to the island by American forces, and believe he resides in Mount Yasur with his countrymen. The village of Sulphur Bay, the center of the movement, claims the volcano as part of their territory.
Yasur can refer to:
Tanna (sometimes spelled Tana) is an island in Tafea Province of Vanuatu.
It is 40 km (25 mi) long and 19 km (12 mi) wide, with a total area of 550 km² (212 sq mi). Its highest point is the 1,084 m (3,556 ft) summit of Mount Tukosmera in the south of the island.
Siwi Lake was located in the east, northeast of the peak, close to the coast until mid April 2000 when following unusually heavy rain, the lake burst down the valley into Sulphur Bay, destroying the village with no loss of life. Mount Yasur is an accessible active volcano which is located on the southeast coast.
Tanna was first settled about 400 BC by Melanesians from the surrounding islands. The glowing light of Mount Yasur attracted James Cook, the first European to visit the island, in August 1774, where he landed in an inlet on the southeastern tip of the island that he named Port Resolution after his ship HMS Resolution. He gave the island the name of Tanna, probably from the local name for earth, tana in the Kwamera language.

In May 2012 we went to Vanuatu. Our goal was Aneityum because of our jewel Akaija. But being so close we also visited Mount Yasur on Tanna, an always active volcano. Impressive experience. It's being in close contact with Mother Earth. But don't be fooled: it's a dangerous place!! Somewhere halfway you'll see a big explosion, and the shockwave is visible. It hit us hard in the stomach. Wow! There aren't many tourists here, it a long drive. Unless you're Jacky Chan, he was here one week before, for his new movie.

After a rugged two-hour off-road trip across Tanna Island in Vanuatu, we hiked up to the rim of the Mount Yasur Volcano and watched it erupt over and over again. The explosions threw red hot lava high above our heads and the hot blast nudged us backwards. Add this experience to your Life List. You won't regret it. We stayed at the White Grass Ocean Resort on the west end of the island. The beautiful but laid back resort rents ocean-view huts at a very affordable rate, the management and staff are superb and the food is world-class and made from local ingredients.
One of the most easily accessible active volcanoes in the world. It put on a great show for us, but was particularly smoky, which obscured the view of the vents somewhat. However, it has to be seen (first-hand) to be believed. Video just doesn't do it justice; you have to go there to feel the awesome power of the eruptions as the shock waves shake the ground and rock your body! Thanks to the beautiful people of Vanuatu, Tanna Lodge and Unity Airlines for a fantastic Tanna Island adventure.
On top of the world's most active volcano, Mount Yasur in Vanuatu, South Pacific. The shockwave is incredible, you really feel it. It erupts every 3 minutes, sending lava bombs high into the air and creating small local earthquakes. I climbed this 300m volcano (barefoot) to film on the edge of the crater and this is what happened. Sorry, no English, but I included subtitles from Thai. Hope you enjoy a little crazy!! Andy

A large erruption catches tourists by surprise on the Mt Yasur Volcano in Vanuatu. The guides yell to get up to the point while a chunk of molten rock the size of a pillow lands a few metres from where the group had been standing.

July 2016. Mt. Yasur, Tanna island, Vanuatu. Considered the most accessible active volcano on Earth. We are very close to the crater's rim to watch, feel and smell the eruptions up close. This is as far as local guides let us go, flying rocks and boulders ejected by the eruptions caused fatal accident recently. You can see these rocks on the video, some of them are very large and also red hot. On this short video I captured one of the strongest eruptions experienced during our 45 minutes stay on the edge of the crater. I was covered with volcanic ash, smelled the sulfur, the earth was shaking, the whole mountain felt like she was breathing. Unforgettable experience, some found it terrifying, but I found it fascinating.
Sam and I on the cauldera of Mount Yasur on Tanna island in Vanuatu. This was where we spent our honeymoon after eloping in Port Vila in 2002. We are standing about 20 meters from the edge of the cauldera with rocks and molten lava launching over our heads. Our guide spent his time reminding us to LOOK UP and dodge the rocks if they are coming near and not to just blindly run away. Vanuatu with their lax duty of care is awesome!!!

So this happened. Char was in Vanuatu for work and we got wind that Mt Yasur was active like a 4 year old on twizzlers so I popped over to meet Char in Port Villa and we headed to Tanna Island on a 1950's turbo prop. Once we got there it was a 2 1/2 hour off road car ride in a 4x4 to the base of the Volcano. The air was full of sulphur and energy. We picked up our guide and drove up the side of the beast. Tip from the guide: When you see lava flying at you, face it and dodge it. Don't run away, it will hit you in the back...OK!!!! On the hike up, the mountain felt alive, it was grumbling and it felt like a bad idea to be where we were, but our curiosity just keep us rushing forward. I setup my DJI Phantom and flew into the inferno. WHAT A SIGHT!!! Had to perform a rapid decent on my 3rd ...
At 3:30pm we jumped in the car with Charlie again and joined also by the Italian couple again. They were also travelling the world for 3 months so we had a bit in common and we managed to find plenty to chat about as we made our way across the island towards the volcano. Now you might wonder if we are getting a bit volcano obsessed, this our 2nd volcano in as many weeks. But it's just the way it turned out. However this one was active and we were promised activity with lava, ash, gases and everything! How exciting. Charlie stopped at the viewpoint on the way and we saw Mt Yasur for the first time. It had ash spewing out he top but it looked really impressive. The second half of the journey there was very slow going. The roads on the first half had been bad as there are no tarmac roads o...

In this Globe Trekker Special -- Volcanoes: Ring of Fire -- travelers Megan McCormick, Ian Wright, Justine Shapiro, Alex Riley, and Sami Sabiti explore the world's most spectacular volcanoes, traveling from the heart of Europe, across the Atlantic and Caribbean, to the deadly Pacific Ring of Fire. In Europe, Ian Wright visits the Italian island of Stromboli, which has been continually erupting for at least a thousand year. Justine Shapiro travels to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which was destroyed in 79AD by an eruption of the nearby volcano Vesuvius. And Megan heads to the Greek island of Santorini, where 1500 years before the demise of Pompeii a cataclysmic eruption destroyed local Minoan cities, and caused a vast tsunami to surge across the Mediterranean. In much more recent...
