10 minutes from the very early rough cut of the 2015 film FAY WRAY, chronicling filmmaker Rick McKay's decade-long friendship and adventures with actress/author/screen icon Fay Wray while on the road in numerous countries. The film cuts between conversations in Fay's home, in the car while Rick is driving with Fay in different towns, long lost home movies and archival footage from Fay's work in Hollywood. The film also includes appearances by Peter Jackson, Naomi Watts, Gore Vidal, Leonard Maltin, Hume Cronyn, William Wegman, Stan Winston as well as her family, Victoria Riskin, Susan Riskin and Bob Riskin. Welcome back to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show, and me, Nigel Honeybone. Don't worry, I'm not going to carry on with the clairvoyance jokes, but of course you knew I was going to say that...I'm sorry, I just can't seem to stop...
Anyway, what drew audiences to The Evil Mind, a Gainsborough Picture, was it's stars. So, who is really the greatest Scream Queen of all time? Is it Barbara Steele or Ingrid Pitt, who starred in many classic horror movies of the sixties? Or could it be the lovely Elsa Lancaster who portrayed the ultimate female fantastic creation in Bride of Frankenstein, or screamers like Carolyn Munroe, Leanna Quigley, or Sybil Danning? Who can claim so many horror projects in their busiest years? Well, all these women are worthy names to toss around, but for many the individual to remember for real Queen status remains a Canadian actress from Alberta named Fay Wray.
In 1933, Fay Wray was being threatened on movie screens by more than just King Kong. Next in The Vampire Bat by, surprisingly enough, a bat, and then in The Mystery Of The Wax Museum, threatened by...um, wax...and so on...as she faultlessly played hapless heroines in horrendous hazards. For the second and third time, she also had to endure Lionel Atwill's formidable villainy. Consequently, the year 1933 was to be Fay's busiest, as eleven different movies took to the screen with her name in the cast.
Fay Wray died in her Manhattan apartment in 2004 from natural causes, close to a month before celebrating her 97th birthday, and she's looking well. The immortal paramour of the apes, Fay Wray had been approached by director Peter Jackson about appearing in his remake of King Kong, but declined with an unarguable finality. Some actors will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid working in New Zealand.

Fay Wray and Leonard Maltin from Rick McKay's film-in-progress FAY WRAY. This mini-chapter tells the story of Fay's films while working at Columbia Pictures. It was very rare that Hollywood ever really utilized Fay's gifts and this chapter shows a few clips that show Fay in a much better light than many of the fantasy/horror films that she fought to rise above. Sadly, she was never truly given the opportunities she deserved. Years later she would meet Ernst Lubitch at a party and he told her that he had wanted to work with her for years, but never had the opportunity. Interesting to imagine what might have been had she been given the chance . . .

Fay Wray (born Vina Fay Wray; September 15, 1907 – August 8, 2004) was a Canadian-American actress most noted for playing the female lead in King Kong. Through an acting career that spanned 57 years, Wray attained international stardom as an actress in horror film roles, leading to many considering her as the first "scream queen".
After appearing in minor film roles, Wray gained media attention being selected as one of the "WAMPAS Baby Stars". This led to Wray being signed to Paramount Pictures as a teenager, where she made more than a dozen films. After leaving Paramount, she signed deals with various film companies, being cast in her first horror film roles among many other types of roles, including in The Bowery (1933) and Viva Villa (1934), both huge productions starring Wallace Beery. For RKO Radio Pictures, Inc., she starred in the film with which she is most identified, King Kong (1933). After the success of King Kong, Wray appeared in many major film roles and on television, finishing her acting career in 1980.

Welcome back to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show, and me, Nigel Honeybone. Don't worry, I'm not going to carry on with the clairvoyance jokes, but of course you knew I was going to say that...I'm sorry, I just can't seem to stop...
Anyway, what drew audiences to The Evil Mind, a Gainsborough Picture, was it's stars. So, who is really the greatest Scream Queen of all time? Is it Barbara Steele or Ingrid Pitt, who starred in many classic horror movies of the sixties? Or could it be the lovely Elsa Lancaster who portrayed the ultimate female fantastic creation in Bride of Frankenstein, or screamers like Carolyn Munroe, Leanna Quigley, or Sybil Danning? Who can claim so many horror projects in their busiest years? Well, all these women are worthy names to toss around, but for many the individual to remember for real Queen status remains a Canadian actress from Alberta named Fay Wray.
In 1933, Fay Wray was being threatened on movie screens by more than just King Kong. Next in The Vampire Bat by, surprisingly enough, a bat, and then in The Mystery Of The Wax Museum, threatened by...um, wax...and so on...as she faultlessly played hapless heroines in horrendous hazards. For the second and third time, she also had to endure Lionel Atwill's formidable villainy. Consequently, the year 1933 was to be Fay's busiest, as eleven different movies took to the screen with her name in the cast.
Fay Wray died in her Manhattan apartment in 2004 from natural causes, close to a month before celebrating her 97th birthday, and she's looking well. The immortal paramour of the apes, Fay Wray had been approached by director Peter Jackson about appearing in his remake of King Kong, but declined with an unarguable finality. Some actors will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid working in New Zealand.

The Wedding March (1928) is a silent film directed by and starring Erich von Stroheim. It also stars Fay Wray and ZaSu Pitts. Paramount Pictures forced von Stroheim to create two films from the footage, the second being The Honeymoon (eventually re-edited back into one film for a re-release). When filmmaker Rick McKay ("Broadway: The Golden Age Trilogy", "Fay Wray", PBS, A&E;) was asked in early 2010 to host a tribute to his friend, the actress Patricia Neal, who had appeared in his films, and to interview her on stage, he happily accepted. The tribute was a benefit for the great NYC theatre company, The Peccadillo Theatre, who was mounting a revival of Lillian Hellman's "Another Part of the Forest", which had made Ms. Neal a Broadway star in 1946, winning her the first Tony Award ever given. However, shortly before the date, Neal fell and was hospitalized in California. Ackerman 1916-2008 Good Bye Mr. Sci Fi Forrest J Ackerman, The Los Angeles native influenced young fans with his Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine and spent a lifetime amassing a vast collection of science fiction and fantasy memorabilia, has died. He was 92. Ackerman, a writer, editor and literary agent who has been credited with coining the term "sci-fi" in the 1950s, died Thursday Dec. 4th 2008 of heart failure at his home in Los Angeles, said John Sasser, a friend who is making a documentary on Ackerman. When filmmaker Rick McKay ("Broadway: The Golden Age Trilogy", "Fay Wray", PBS, A&E;) was asked in early 2010 to host a tribute to his friend, the actress Patricia Neal, who had appeared in his films, and to interview her on stage, he happily accepted. The tribute was a benefit for the great NYC theatre company, The Peccadillo Theatre, who was mounting a revival of Lillian Hellman's "Another Part of the Forest", which had made Ms. Neal a Broadway star in 1946, winning her the first Tony Award ever given. However, shortly before the date, Neal fell and was hospitalized in California. At the last minute McKay put together this video tribute, or "virtual interview" to substitute, which was shown on stage at the benefit as a huge success. Ms. Neal's friends rallied to appear at the tribute, which happily turned into a celebration of her life hosted by McKay, with the help of her friends Joel Vigg, Cliff Robertson, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson, Betsy von Furstenburg, Tammy Grimes and many more. Sadly, Ms. Neal was never to return to NYC, did not see the new production of "Forest" (which got rave reviews and was extended), but happily did get to see this footage as well as a tape of the tribute evening before she passed away on August 8th, 2010. A true friend, a great actress and an incredible inspiration to millions, Patricia Neal will be greatly missed . . .

Forrest J Ackerman, The Los Angeles native influenced young fans with his Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine and spent a lifetime amassing a vast collection of science fiction and fantasy memorabilia, has died. He was 92. Ackerman, a writer, editor and literary agent who has been credited with coining the term "sci-fi" in the 1950s, died Thursday Dec. 4th 2008 of heart failure at his home in Los Angeles, said John Sasser, a friend who is making a documentary on Ackerman.
Among those who reportedly grew up reading Famous Monsters of Filmland was author Stephen King. Other childhood readers included movie directors Joe Dante, John Landis and Steven Spielberg, who once autographed a poster of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" for Ackerman, saying, "A generation of fantasy lovers thank you for raising us so well."
Ackerman was a celebrity in his own right, once signing 10,000 autographs during a three-day monster movie convention in New York City.
This, after all, was the man who created and wrote the comic books "Vampirella" and "Jeanie of Questar" and was the ultimate fan's fan: a man who actually had known Lugosi and Karloff and whose priceless collection of science fiction, horror and fantasy artifacts ran to some 300,000 items.
For years, Ackerman housed his enormous cache of books, movie stills, posters, paintings, movie props, masks and assorted memorabilia in his 18-room home in Los Feliz.
He dubbed the house the Ackermansion.
For Ackerman, a native Angeleno born on Nov. 24, 1916, it all began at age 9 in 1926.
That's when he stopped at a drugstore on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Western Avenue in Hollywood and bought his first copy of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.
From then on, Ackerman was helplessly hooked.
The jam-packed repository included everything from a Dracula cape worn by Lugosi to Mr. Spock's pointy ears; and from Lon Chaney Sr.'s makeup kit to the paper plate flying saucer used by director Ed Wood in "Plan 9 From Outer Space."
At the time, Ackerman already was well-known among science fiction and horror aficionados for his massive collection.
After a couple from Texas showed up on his doorstep in 1951 asking to view the collection, Ackerman began opening his home up for regular, informal tours on Saturdays.
Over the years, thousands of people made the pilgrimage to the Ackermansion.
The Dracula/Frankenstein room featured a casket as a "coffin table" and the cape Lugosi wore in the stage version of "Dracula." A case displayed one of the horror film legend's bow ties, which, Ackerman would gleefully note, contained a drop of blood.
Among the collection's other highlights: the ring worn by Lugosi in "Dracula," the giant-winged pterodactyl that swooped down for Fay Wray in "King Kong," Lon Chaney's cape from "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Metropolis" director Fritz Lang's monocle.
The affable Ackerman would escort his visitors through the priceless warren of books, posters and memorabilia, settling into a chair in each room and answering questions.
"He was always just a big kid," said Fangoria's Timpone. "I really cherished all the times I've been with him."
Over the years, he made numerous cameo appearances in films, including Dante's "The Howling" and Landis' "Innocent Blood." Landis also had Ackerman eating popcorn behind Michael Jackson in the movie theater scene in his "Thriller" video.
