Telerobotics is the area of robotics concerned with the control of semi-autonomous robots from a distance, chiefly using Wireless network (like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the Deep Space Network, and similar) or tethered connections. It is a combination of two major subfields, teleoperation and telepresence.
Teleoperation indicates operation of a machine at a distance. It is similar in meaning to the phrase "remote control" but is usually encountered in research, academic and technical environments. It is most commonly associated with robotics and mobile robots but can be applied to a whole range of circumstances in which a device or machine is operated by a person from a distance.
Teleoperation is standard term in use both in research and technical communities and is by far the most standard term for referring to operation at a distance. This is opposed to "telepresence" that is a less standard term and might refer to a whole range of existence or interaction that include a remote connotation.
Delft University of Technology (Dutch: Technische Universiteit Delft [ˈtɛxnisə ˌynivɛrsiˈtɛi̯t ˈdɛl(ə)ft]), also known as TU Delft, is the largest and oldest Dutch public technological university, located in Delft, Netherlands. With eight faculties and numerous research institutes it hosts over 19,000 students (undergraduate and postgraduate), more than 3,300 scientists and more than 2,200 people in the support and management staff.
The university was established on 8 January 1842 by King William II of the Netherlands as a Royal Academy, with the main purpose of training civil servants for the Dutch East Indies. The school rapidly expanded its research and education curriculum, becoming first a Polytechnic School in 1864, Institute of Technology in 1905, gaining full university rights, and finally changing its name to Delft University of Technology in 1986.
Dutch Nobel laureates Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, and Simon van der Meer have been associated with TU Delft. TU Delft is a member of several university federations including the IDEA League, CESAER, UNITECH, and 3TU.

In the aftermath of an earthquake, every second counts. The team behind the Smart Emergency Response System (SERS) is developing technology to locate people quickly and help first responders save more lives. At the Smart America Expo, Howard Chizeck, professor of electrical engineering at the University of Washington, showed a system he's helped develop where one can log on to a Wi-Fi network in order to tele-operate a robot working in a dangerous environment. Surgeons can use the system to perform remote surgeries from thousands of miles away. Through a start-up supported by NSF, researchers are adapting the technology to allow robots working underwater to turn off a valve at the base of an off-shore oil rig to prevent a major spill. André Schiele, head of ESA’s Telerobotics and Haptics Laboratory and Associate of the Delft Robotics Institute introduces the robot rover key to his new experiment in his own words. This is the Interact Centaur rover that ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will be operating from orbit aboard the International Space Station, to drive into position and then perform an operation requiring sub-millimetre precision.
