Dripping with sensuality, Abbe Lane was at her best performing live as a night club singer. Her first big break came when she was selected as the feature vocalist for The Xavier Cugat Orchestra. She turned that break into a short Hollywood film career, usually cast as the "exotic". She would make several more films in Italy, but it would always be her sexy stage shows that her fans will most remember.
Abigail Francine Lassman was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 14th, 1932. Her career dates back to her late teens when she was already an accomplished vocalist. During that time she came to the attention of latin band leader Xavier Cugat. Cugat was riding the crest of the latin-mania of the late 1940's and early 1950's. Her occasional singing spot, with his mainly instrumental orchestra, was the highlight of the nightclub circuit from coast to coast. Her first appearance on film also came through her affiliation with Cugat. In 1952 she starred in a mini-movie simply entitled "Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra". Her recording career also blossomed around the same time. A host of albums followed during the 1950's. Besides her now legendary recordings with Cugat, Abbe also was feted by and recorded with Sid Ramin, Tito Puente and countless others.
Her marriage in 1952 to Xavier Cugat was one of many for the aging band leader. Her career was prolific both as an actress and vocalist during the 1950's and well into the 1960's.
A rare interview from "ADAM" magazine in 1963 reveals exactly who Abbe was and what she meant to show business: "With her mobile hips, her sultry voice and her free-wheeling outlook on love, Abbe Lane has well earned the crown of... The Swingingest Sexpot In Show Business". She said: "Jayne Mansfield may turn the boys into men, but I take them from there."

Two days after recording some overdubs for 'A Day In The Life', The Beatles spent the afternoon in East London at Angel Lane, Stratford, filming scenes for the video of 'Penny Lane' with Scandinavian director, Peter Goldmann.
Shortly after the East London shoot, Goldmann and The Beatles headed to Knole Park, the grounds of a stately home in Kent, to film scenes of the band horse-riding in the countryside. Around this time, Goldmann and his crew (but minus The Beatles) travelled to Liverpool to shoot the sequences near to Penny Lane.
A few days before filming started for 'Penny Lane', Goldmann shot a promo for 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Both shoots presented a challenge for everyone involved owing to the Musicians' Union ban on any action that could be construed as miming. Despite these limitations, both the films Goldmann made were so innovative that neither would have looked out of place on MTV a decade and a half later.

Abbe Lane (born Abigail Francine Lassman; December 14, 1932) is an American singer and actress.
Biography
Born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, Lane began her career as a child actress on radio, and from there she progressed to singing and dancing on Broadway.
Married to Xavier Cugat from 1952 until their divorce in 1964, Lane achieved her greatest success as a nightclub singer, and was described in a 1963 magazine article as "the swingingest sexpot in show business." Cugat's influence was seen in her music which favoured Latin and rumba styles. In 1958 she starred opposite Tony Randall in the Broadway musical Oh, Captain!, but her recording contract prevented her from appearing on the original cast album of the show. On the recording her songs were performed by Eileen Rodgers; Lane later recorded her songs on a solo album. The most successful of her records was a 1958 album collaboration with Tito Puente titled Be Mine Tonight. Apart from working solo, Lane frequently appeared on talk shows with Cugat.

• Cansado de la música clásica incursiona en los ritmos afrocubanos con influencia de jazz para hacerla atractiva al público norteamericano introduciendo así la conga y la rumba.
• Su primera orquesta la llamó "Coconut Grove" y su éxito fue tal, que se codeo con lo más selecto de Hollywood: Greta Garbo, Rodolfo Valentino, Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks.
• Desde muy niño Xavier Cugat a parte de su habilidad como músico, también era un gran caricaturista, por lo que fue contratado en 1924 por el diario "Los Angeles Times".
• En muchas de sus fotos y caricaturas de sus LP`S, aparece con una pipa la cual nunca fumaba, lo hacía porque tenía una tienda de estas, su visión y éxito en los negocios lo hicieron incursionar en la crianza de perros y hasta en restaurantes de comida Española con un toque americano.
• Actuó por décadas en el "Waldorff Astoria" de Nueva York; hizo un programa de radio, que siempre comenzaba con la canción de Lecuona "Siempre en mi Corazón".
• Cugat fue considerado como el primer exponente de música latina y populariza el mambo, el cha-cha-cha, el tango, el calipso y la música brasileña, además ayuda a lograr la fama a muchos artistas como Desi Arnaz, Miguelito Valdéz, Tito Rodríguez, Luis del Campo, e Ima Sumac.
