Blizzard North was the Bay Area division of Blizzard Entertainment, known for the Diablo series. The studio was originally based in Redwood City, and then moved a short distance away to San Mateo, with Blizzard proper being based in Irvine (in southern California).
Blizzard North was originally an independent company. It was established in 1993 under the name Condor, founded by Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, and David Brevik. The company was purchased and renamed by Blizzard about six months before the release of their hit PC game, Diablo, in 1996. Diablo proved to be incredibly successful, and their 2000 sequel Diablo II was more successful yet. An expansion pack followed the year after.
By June 2003 two new games were in production. However on June 30, 2003, several key employees left Blizzard North to form the new companies Flagship Studios (8 moved here including Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, David Brevik and Bill Roper) and Castaway Entertainment (9 moved here).[citation needed] The Blizzard North exodus continued on with around 30 employees leaving the company in total.
David Brevik is a video game developer and possibly best known as a co-founder of Blizzard North (back then under the name Condor Inc.), the highly successful video game company behind titles such as the Diablo series.
Brevik was educated at California State University, Chico during 1986 to 1991. Following his position as Lead Technical Director at Iguana Entertainment, he left to form Condor / Blizzard North during September 1993 to 2003, holding a position as president on the company. He resigned and co-founded Flagship Studios (in 2003) as well as Ping0 (in 2006), a sister company to Flagship Studios. After the company dissolved it was announced that he was appointed new creative director for Turbine and its new West coast studio. In 2009, David Brevik began at Gazillion Entertainment in San Mateo, CA working in the Gargantuan Studio. In 2011, Gargantuan became Secret Identity Studios and David Brevik was named President and COO of Gazillion Entertainment.
GameSpot named his as 1996's fourth most influential person in computer gaming for his role in the inception and development of Diablo.
