The music industry consists of the companies and individuals that make money by creating and selling live music performances, sound recordings and music videos of songs and instrumental pieces. Among the many individuals and organizations that operate in the industry are: the songwriters and composers who create new music; the singers, musicians, conductors and bandleaders who perform the music; the companies and professionals who create and sell recorded music and/or sheet music (e.g., music publishers, producers, recording studios, engineers, record labels, retail and online music stores, performance rights organizations); and those that help organize and present live music performances (booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew).
The industry also includes professionals who assist singers and musicians with their music careers (talent managers, artists and repertoire managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers); those who broadcast music (satellite, Internet radio stations, broadcast radio and TV stations); music journalists and music critics; music educators and teachers; musical instrument manufacturers; as well as many others.
Industry is the production of goods or services within an economy. The major source of revenue of a group or company is the indicator of its relevant industry. When a large group has multiple sources of revenue generation, it is considered to be working in different industries. Manufacturing industry became a key sector of production and labour in European and North American countries during the Industrial Revolution, upsetting previous mercantile and feudal economies. This occurred through many successive rapid advances in technology, such as the production of steel and coal.
Following the Industrial Revolution, possibly a third of the world's economic output is derived that is from manufacturing industries. Many developed countries and many developing/semi-developed countries (People's Republic of China, India etc.) depend significantly on manufacturing industry. Industries, the countries they reside in, and the economies of those countries are interlinked in a complex web of interdependence.

It sums up how the music recording industry works in relationship to it's artists. I found it particularly interesting as it relates to the film industry. The über indie filmmaker can learn a lot from what has happened to the music industry. How do artists of any kind survive and thrive in this digital age? That's what I try and explore for the filmmaker over at FILM TROOPER, helping filmmakers become entrepreneurs. ————————————————————————————— Stuck trying to make your movie? Get a FREE gear guide. Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Ed O'Brien talk to Dave Fanning about the music industry, record labels, marketing, and how their digital release of In Rainbows was like jumping off a cliff.
After visiting the U.K. I flew to The Netherlands to visit Record Industry, Europe's largest pressing plant. Formerly owned by Sony, it is now owned by Ton Vermeulen, who took me on a guided tour of the "one stop" facility. Mr. Vermuelen is also part owner of the label Music on Vinyl, which has an office in the pressing plant.

This episode of 'The Business of Life' looks at two creative industries going in seemingly opposite trajectories: the fine art world, where the sky is seemingly the limit for the prices collectors are willing to pay; and the music industry, where the free-fall of record company profits has only recently begun to slow. But at the root of each sector’s rising or declining fortunes is the underlying question: How should we compensate artists? And what value do cultural products create in a society? To get to the bottom of the issue, we’ve tapped the former New Yorker pop critic Sasha Frere-Jones, award-winning artist Ryder Ripps, and Glenn O’Brien, the founder of TV Party, original editor of Interview Magazine, and a former member of Andy Warhol’s Factory. Watch “How the US Workforce is Cha...
Chris Gotti founded Murder Inc., which churned out some of the biggest hits in hip-hop, but the famed music executive is now moving on with a new company called ADD Ventures. Chris explained to us that his new company offers artists an opportunity to manage their own music with industry advice given by himself. Gotti added that record labels will probably be non-existent in the next 3-5 years, and he predicted that companies like ADD Ventures will replace the labels. Speaking more about ADD Ventures, Chris pointed out how he helped one of the artists get on the Billboard Top 200 and get his song played on the radio. You can hear more about Chris Gotti and his new approach to the music industry in the above clip.
