Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière (known as Basilique de Fourvière in French) is a minor basilica in Lyon. It was built with private funds between 1872 and 1884 in a dominating position in the city. The site it occupies was once the Roman forum of Trajan, the forum vetus (old forum), thus its name (as an inverted corruption of the French Vieux-Forum).
Role in the history and life of the city
Fourvière is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom is attributed the salvation of the city of Lyon from the bubonic plague, the Black Death, that was sweeping Europe in 1643. Each year in early December (December 8, day of the Immaculate Conception), Lyon thanks the Virgin for saving the city by lighting candles throughout the city, in what is called the Fête des Lumières or the Festival of Lights. The Virgin is also credited with saving the city a number of other times, such as from a Cholera epidemic in 1832, and a Prussian invasion in 1870.
During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1), Prussian forces, having taken Paris, were progressing south towards Lyon. Their halt and retreat were, once again, attributed by the Church to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.

Fourvière is a district of Lyon, France and also a hill immediately west of the old part of the town, rising abruptly from the river Saône and then gently sloping down to the north-west. It is the site of the original Roman settlement of Lugdunum (43 BC). Though it supports the world's two oldest and active funicular lines, it is primarily known for the Catholic Basilica of Fourvière. The inauguration of the golden statue of the Virgin Mary on the north-west tower is the origin of the famous 8 December Festival of Lights, when the citizens of Lyon display candles (lumignons) at their windows. This festival now attracts hundreds of thousands of people into the streets of Lyon every year. Fourvière contains many other religious buildings including convents, monasteries and chapels. It is known in Lyon as "the hill that prays". It is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site designated for the city of Lyon in 1998.

Sur la terrasse, avec la superbe vue qu’on y a, tous s’ouvre au monde… alentour ! La colline de Fourvière, où se situe la basilique, fut habitée au moins depuis l’époque romaine. Le théâtre, du Ier siècle avant J-C, au cœur de Lugdunum, l’antique Lyon, en est un superbe vestige. C’est ensuite au XVIIe siècle que les lieux prirent de l’importance. Alors que la peste sévissait, les notables locaux jurèrent de monter en pèlerinage chaque année à Fourvière, si l’épidémie s’arrêtait. Ils durent s’exécuter ! En 1870, à nouveau un vœu, mais pour que la ville soit épargnée par les Prussiens. Cette fois-ci, c’était l’agrandissement de l’église qui fut promis. En 1872, la première pierre de la basilique Notre-Dame était posée…et la dernière en 1884 ! Aujourd’hui, flanquée de quatre tours et d’un clocher isolé, elle se compose d’une crypte assez sobre, symbole de l’Ancien Testament, quand le Christ n’était pas encore venu. Lorsque les pèlerins pénètrent dans la nef, ils ne peuvent alors qu’être illuminés au sens propre comme figuré tant la décoration y est flamboyante ! Mosaïques, bas-reliefs, frises, colonnes, dorures, voûtes, coupoles, statues, vitraux… tout est bon pour révéler la grandeur de Marie et de son fils !

Lyon is a commune in the rhône-eastern France, France. Seat of the council of the metropolis of LyonNote , to which its special status confers both the attributions of a metropolis and a department, it is also the capital of the arrondissement of Lyon, that of the departmental constituency of the Rhône and that of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune has a location as a geographical crossroads of the country, north of the Rhone corridor that runs from Lyon to Marseille. Former capital of Gaul at the time of the Roman Empire, it is the seat of an archbishopric whose holder bears the title of primate of Gaul. Lyon, historically an industrial city, has hosted many petrochemical activities south of the city along the Rhône, in what is called the chemical corridor. After the departure and closure of the textile industries, it gradually refocused on high-tech sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It is also the second student city in France, with four universities and several grandes écoles. Finally, the city has preserved an important architectural heritage ranging from the Roman era to the twentieth century through the Renaissance and, as such, the districts of Old Lyon3, from the hill of Fourvière4, the Presqu'île5 and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse6 are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In 2019, Lyon is, by its population, the third municipality of France with 522,969 inhabitants, the city-center of the second urban unit with 1,685,494 inhabitants and the second attraction area of France with 2,280,845 inhabitants. It is the prefecture of the Rhône department, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the South-East defense and security zone and the headquarters of the metropolis of Lyon, which brings together 59 municipalities and 1,411,571 inhabitants in 20197. The city exerts an attractiveness of national and European importance. Its importance in the cultural, banking, financial, commercial, technological, pharmaceutical, arts and entertainment fields make it a world city of "Beta-" rank according to the GaWC ranking in 2020, comparable to Osaka, St. Petersburg or Stuttgart8. The city is also home to the headquarters of the International Agency for Research on Cancer since 1965 and Interpol since 1989.

Symboles, cette basilique n’est - presque ! - que cela. Son architecture de forteresse affirme l’inébranlable foie en Marie, et sa décoration opulente et parlante, éblouit et instruit les pèlerins. Sur la terrasse, avec la superbe vue qu’on y a, tous s’ouvre au monde… alentour ! La colline de Fourvière, où se situe la basilique, fut habitée au moins depuis l’époque romaine. Le théâtre, du Ier siècle avant J-C, au cœur de Lugdunum, l’antique Lyon, en est un superbe vestige. C’est ensuite au XVIIe siècle que les lieux prirent de l’importance. Alors que la peste sévissait, les notables locaux jurèrent de monter en pèlerinage chaque année à Fourvière, si l’épidémie s’arrêtait. Ils durent s’exécuter ! En 1870, à nouveau un vœu, mais pour que la ville soit épargnée par les Prussiens. Cette fois-ci, c’était l’agrandissement de l’église qui fut promis. En 1872, la première pierre de la basilique Notre-Dame était posée…et la dernière en 1884 ! Aujourd’hui, flanquée de quatre tours et d’un clocher isolé, elle se compose d’une crypte assez sobre, symbole de l’Ancien Testament, quand le Christ n’était pas encore venu. Lorsque les pèlerins pénètrent dans la nef, ils ne peuvent alors qu’être illuminés au sens propre comme figuré tant la décoration y est flamboyante ! Mosaïques, bas-reliefs, frises, colonnes, dorures, voûtes, coupoles, statues, vitraux… tout est bon pour révéler la grandeur de Marie et de son fils !

The Vieux Lyon is the largest Renaissance district of Lyon. In 1964, Vieux-Lyon, the city's oldest district, became the first site in France to be protected under the Malraux law to protect France's cultural sites. Covering an area of 424 hectares between the Fourvière hill and the river Saône, it is one of Europe’s most extensive Renaissance neighborhoods. There are three distinct sections: Saint Jean, Saint Paul and Saint Georges. In 1998, Vieux Lyon was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other districts in Lyon because of its historical importance and architecture.

Lyon is a commune in the rhône-eastern France, France. Seat of the council of the metropolis of LyonNote , to which its special status confers both the attributions of a metropolis and a department, it is also the capital of the arrondissement of Lyon, that of the departmental constituency of the Rhône and that of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are called Lyonnais.
The commune has a location as a geographical crossroads of the country, north of the Rhone corridor that runs from Lyon to Marseille. Located between the Massif Central to the west and the Alpine massif to the east, the city of Lyon occupies a strategic position in north-south traffic in Europe. Former capital of Gaul at the time of the Roman Empire, it is the seat of an archbishopric whose holder bears the title of primate of Gaul. Lyon became a very commercial city and a first-rate financial centre during the Renaissance. Its economic prosperity was also driven at that time by silk and printing and then by the appearance of industries including textiles, chemicals and, more recently, by the image industry.
Lyon, historically an industrial city, has hosted many petrochemical activities south of the city along the Rhône, in what is called the chemical corridor. After the departure and closure of the textile industries, it gradually refocused on high-tech sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It is also the second student city in France, with four universities and several grandes écoles. Finally, the city has preserved an important architectural heritage ranging from the Roman era to the twentieth century through the Renaissance and, as such, the districts of Old Lyon3, from the hill of Fourvière4, the Presqu'île5 and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse6 are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In 2019, Lyon is, by its population, the third municipality of France with 522,969 inhabitants, the city-center of the second urban unit with 1,685,494 inhabitants and the second attraction area of France with 2,280,845 inhabitants. It is the prefecture of the Rhône department, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the South-East defense and security zone and the headquarters of the metropolis of Lyon, which brings together 59 municipalities and 1,411,571 inhabitants in 20197. The city exerts an attractiveness of national and European importance. Its importance in the cultural, banking, financial, commercial, technological, pharmaceutical, arts and entertainment fields make it a world city of "Beta-" rank according to the GaWC ranking in 2020, comparable to Osaka, St. Petersburg or Stuttgart8. The city is also home to the headquarters of the International Agency for Research on Cancer since 1965 and Interpol since 1989.

Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière (known as Basilique de Fourvière in French) is a minor basilica in Lyon. It was built with private funds between 1872 and 1884 in a dominating position in the city. The site it occupies was once the Roman forum of Trajan, the forum vetus (old forum), thus its name (as an inverted corruption of the French Vieux-Forum).
Role in the history and life of the city
Fourvière is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom is attributed the salvation of the city of Lyon from the bubonic plague, the Black Death, that was sweeping Europe in 1643. Each year in early December (December 8, day of the Immaculate Conception), Lyon thanks the Virgin for saving the city by lighting candles throughout the city, in what is called the Fête des Lumières or the Festival of Lights. The Virgin is also credited with saving the city a number of other times, such as from a Cholera epidemic in 1832, and a Prussian invasion in 1870.
During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1), Prussian forces, having taken Paris, were progressing south towards Lyon. Their halt and retreat were, once again, attributed by the Church to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
