(Review) The Masters 2010 - Phil Mickelson overshadows Tiger Woods
The US Masters got the champion it wanted. Phil Mickelson, devoted husband, loving father and antidote to that rampant individualist Tiger Woods. The solemn rebuke passed down to Woods by the Augusta National chairman, Billy Payne, on the eve of the event was as astonishing as any shot hit around this Georgia Eden.
Payne's address expressed more than disappointment. It was a reminder to Woods of the order of things, of the rules of entry into this club, of the power of old-school America to call the shots. Woods might be bigger than golf, but he is not bigger than the green jacket. Augusta National is not so much a golf club as a bastion of power, wealth, privilege, influence and control, an emblem and self-appointed guardian of the American way of life.
After Mickelson walked up the 18th fairway, his blue-eyed countenance lit up by a smile as flawless as his scorecard, Augusta was able to tie a ribbon around the story and package its champion as Captain America, a Mills and Boon warrior safeguarding the wholesome Christian values so beloved of the game in this whitewashed enclave.
Mickelson has no control over the presentation of this epic spectacle as a parable for life. He is simply doing his job, playing golf, winning the tournament for himself. The embrace of wife Amy, a vision of stoic blondeness at the side of the 18th green, was a moment of crushing sincerity that would have had Al Capone in tears.
It was also the signal for the Augusta landscapers to go to work. The broadcast partners fired up the violins and overlaid their narrative in deep baritone. One could not move around the 18th green for schmaltz. Amy's struggle against cancer, Phil's unswerving support of his wife, the children at the heart of this American pageant, all came together in glorious soft focus.
The presentation ceremony brought pastor Payne back into the foreground to ram home his righteous message. In the warm evening sunshine, last year's champion, Angel Cabrera, was called upon to dress Mickelson in life-affirming green, reprising the scene performed moments earlier in the Butler Cabin for television. Woods was out of the building, gone. And all was well with the world.
The errant one left behind a cryptic message that blurred the trail of his comeback. He was off to attend to himself, to root out the errors in his game and didn't know where he would resurface next. He might start by slowing everything down 10 per cent.
The golf swing is a complex fusion of mechanical forces and moving parts. It does not need any help from its owner to break down. In his eagerness to make an impact Woods threw all he had and more at the ball. The result was, in the words of Nick Faldo, a mess.
No such problems for Mickelson on a course that is uniquely tolerant of his technical misdemeanours. In 17 visits to Augusta Mickelson has finished in the top 10 on 13 occasions, winning three green jackets.
The victory gave Mickelson his fourth major title. He might have had many more had he been able in his youth to contain his appetite for risk. Before he broke into the winner's enclosure, Mickelson had clocked up eight top-three finishes. In total his career record shows six second places – five at the US Open – and six thirds.
The Woods vault might not have been so full had Mickelson's strike rate matched his ability to strike a ball. More than his golf, it is his manner that endears. He is all that he seems, a genuine character who admits to his flaws and plays the game with a smile on his face. One does not need a cartoonist to draw out the polar opposite in Woods.
So the game's principal figures move forward in opposite directions, one at the top of his game, the other still looking for his, and both at a crossroads in their personal lives.
It appears Mrs Mickelson is over the worst of her crisis, though not necessarily the effects of the treatment. The prognosis for Mrs Woods, or her husband, is not certain.

2015 MASTERS FINAL DAY: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose
Spieth sets another Masters record ahead of final round
Jordan Spieth walked off the 18th green Saturday with another Masters record, a four-shot lead and a solemn look that suggested he knew he was still a long way off from being measured for a green jacket.
Spieth had a seven-shot lead with two holes to play and was on the same score - 18-under par - that only Tiger Woods had ever reached at Augusta National. Out of nowhere, he made a careless double bogey on the 17th hole. Ahead of him on the 18th, former U.S. Open champion Justin Rose poured in a birdie putt.
Just like that, the lead was nearly cut in half.
His gutsy short game saved him in the end. Spieth hit a flop shot from a tight lie to 10 feet and made the par putt for a 2-under 70. That steadied the 21-year-old Texan going into a final round that no longer looks like a runaway.
Spieth was at 16-under 200, breaking by one shot the 54-hole record at the Masters held by Woods in 1997 and Raymond Floyd in 1976.
On a day of charges and endless cheers, Spieth now gets to return and do this all over again.
"We've got a long way to go," Spieth said.
Rose closed with five birdies on his last six holes for a 67, and that birdie on the 18th put him in the final group for the first time in a major.
Phil Mickelson wore a pink shirt in honor of Arnold Palmer because he knew he needed a big charge, and the three-time Masters champion delivered a 67, despite two bogeys on the back nine. Mickelson was five shots behind.
Woods and Rory McIlroy will play together in the final round of a major for the first time - but they are 10 shots behind.
Spieth knew what he was facing even before he started.
Woods, who for three rounds has made everyone forget about that guy who shot 82 in the Phoenix Open earlier this year, ran off three straight birdies early in the round, and he threw a victorious fist pump after a most improbable birdie on the 13th hole. McIlroy made eagle on his second hole, went out in 32 and inched closer to Spieth on the back nine.
Both of them stalled.
McIlroy made bogey on two of the last three holes for a 68. Woods made a bogey from the bunker on the 18th for a 68.
For a short time late in the afternoon, Spieth made the green jacket ceremony seem like a formality.
Four shots ahead of Charley Hoffman, Spieth buried a 10-foot putt on the 12th hole and another birdie from about the same distance at the 13th. He followed a three-putt bogey on the 14th hole by making two more birdies, and his lead was up to seven shots as the trees began casting long shadows.
He looked in total control at what is the most peaceful time of the day at Augusta National.
And then it was shattered. Spieth chipped weakly to the 17th green and three-putted for a double bogey. It was a reminder how quickly comfort can vanish.
The story line should sound familiar - a 21-year-old with a four-shot lead going after his first major at Augusta National. Four years ago, that was McIlroy, who shot 80 in the final round.
Now it's Spieth's turn, and he at least knows what to expect. A year ago, Spieth was tied with Bubba Watson going into the last round and had a two-shot lead with 11 holes to play until Watson rallied to win.
"I think the good thing for him is he's already experienced it once," McIlroy said. "He's played in the final group at the Masters before. It didn't quite happen for him last year, but I think he'll have learned from that experience. I think all that put together, he'll definitely handle it a lot better than I did."
McIlroy all but ruled out his chances of adding the Masters to his collection of majors. Only one player in major championship history has rallied from 10 shots behind on the final day. That was Paul Lawrie at Carnoustie in the 1999 British Open, and Jean Van de Velde is nowhere to be found.
Woods wasn't willing to concede.
He mentioned Greg Norman's collapse in 1996 after the second round, and McIlroy's collapse after he finished up his third round.
"I'm going to have to put together a really special round of golf tomorrow," Woods said. "And you just never know. You never know around this golf course."
Spieth was reminded on one hole - a double bogey at the 17th - how quickly it can change.
He starts the last leg of this dominant week with Rose. Right ahead of them will be Mickelson, one of the most popular figures at Augusta, with Hoffman (71). Woods and McIlroy will be ahead of them.
"There's going to be roars," Spieth said. "Phil is going to have a lot of roars in front. A few groups up I think is Tiger and Rory ... well, you're going to hear something. It's about just throwing those out of my mind, not worrying about it, not caring, setting a goal and being patient with the opportunities that are going to come my way."

Phil Mickelson’s Round 2 lead at 2015 Shell Houston Open
While Phil Mickelson conducted a press conference after a nice and tidy round of golf had provided him with the clubhouse lead in the Shell Houston Open — he’d taken only 67 swings, five fewer than par for the Golf Club of Houston course — some strange things were happening behind his back, well out of earshot.
The questions being thrown at Mickelson came with the unstated presumption that he’d be the guy to catch on the weekend. That was going to be good for everyone, the ideal scenario. His stature in the game, with his five major titles, three green jackets and 42 PGA Tour victories, is such that people pay a lot more attention when he’s out front, especially with the Masters on deck.
But it wasn’t to be.
First, PGA Tour rookie Andrew Putnam caught, then passed Mickelson, posting the day’s first best score, a 65, by birdieing six of his last nine holes on the course’s defenseless front side. Then Austin Cook, a survivor of the Monday “four-spotter” playing in the final threesome before they unleashed the lawnmowers. Cook also came in with a 65 to land a spot in Saturday’s imminently desirable last group.
Putnam, Mickelson and Cook go off at noon. Collectively, they will have five major titles, three green jackets and 42 PGA Tour victories. Only Mickelson, the 2011 SHO champion, had previously made the cut in Houston. This was Cook’s first try. Putnam got summarily lopped off a year ago, in his big-boy tour debut, putting up a 75 and a 72.
When he visited the press room, plopping down in the same cat-bird’s seat occupied by Mickelson 45 minutes earlier, the 26-year-old former Pepperdine University golfer from Spokane, Wash., tried to act nonchalant, fooling nobody.
“Solo lead . . . that’s pretty cool,” Putnam said, noting that he’d shared the lead on day in Las Vegas tournament last fall.
He admitted he hadn’t seen what happened coming. A 30 for nine holes? Are you kidding?
“I haven’t been playing good or scoring well,” Putnam said. “Both have been bad. But (I’m) doing both well this week.”
Indeed. At 132, he’s 12-under for the tournament. Next come Mickelson and Cook, both a stroke ahead of Graham DeLaet and Luke Guthrie. The Canadian DeLaet, who was himself the leader of the pack for several holes, put up a second consecutive 67. Guthrie shot 68 on the heels of a first-round 67.
Cook’s take on what he’d pulled out of the proverbial hat was more effusive than Putnam’s assessment.
“It was unbelievable,” Cook said. “It was great. I’m really, really comfortable with my swing and my game right now and it’s kind of showing.”
Six players are in the next group at 135, including 21-year-old Justin Spieth, a career-high fourth in the World Golf Rankings. Mickelson’s august presence notwithstanding, it’s Spieth who looms as the real player to watch over the next 48 hours. Coming in off a tournament victory and a runner-up finish in his last two starts, the sweet-stroking 21-year-old from Dallas shot 66, three strokes better than he had on Friday.
But for one errant drive on No. 17, Mickelson could have kept a share of the lead. That goof-up ended up costing him a bogey, cancelling out the shot he’d gained by draining a 25-foot birdie putt that got him to 12-under two holes earlier.
“I just blocked it a little bit, not a very good swing,” Mickelson said. “I certainly let that one get away. But I’ve driven it very well this week . . . hit a lot of fairways. My short game has been sharp, too. I’ve hit some good pitches. The putter feels a lot better, but it’s felt better for a while. I’m excited about this weekend.”
Mickelson predicted the remaining 36 holes will be “a shootout . . . The golf course is in great shape, as always. It’s a fun tournament and it’s fun to have put myself in a (good) position to have a chance. That’s an important thing for me heading into next week, to get into contention, to feel the pressure. Because the pressure that you feel trying to win the Masters is greater than just about anything we have.”
Something Andrew Putman and Austin Cook wouldn’t understand. Yet anyway.
