Candidates cast their ballot in Liberia presidential election
(26 Dec 2017) The candidates in Liberia's presidential election cast their ballot in a suburb of the capital, Monrovia, on Tuesday.
The election pits 51-year-old former football star and senator George Weah against 73-year-old Joseph Boakai, who has been the country's vice president for the last 12 years.
The West African nation, founded by freed American slaves, will see one democratically elected government hand power to another for the first time in more than 70 years.
Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, 79, is stepping down as president after two terms in office that brought the impoverished country out of back-to-back civil wars and grappled with a deadly Ebola outbreak.
Weah was defeated by Sirleaf in 2005, but said he was certain of victory this time round.

Theresa LePore, designer of the infamous "butterfly ballot," interviewed 12/2000.
May have cost Al Gore the presidency. But then also could have lost due to Brooks Brother riot orchestrated by Roger Stone, which he now regrets given the failed presidency of George Bush, namely the Iraq War.
Not entirely her fault. County should have policies and procedures that ensure its ballots and other elements of the election process are subject to a quality control review.

Amanda Litman: We have a chance to decide the basic foundational premise of our democracy. Whose vote matters and who gets to represent us in Washington. This is the moment where your vote matters and your engagement matters more than any other time especially local.
One of the most important things you can do as a voter is vote the whole ballot.
Down ballot races are exactly what they sound like when you go to vote and you look at the ballot the very top of the ticket is the highest ranking federal office in 2020. That means President from there on down it might be Congressional and Senate and statewide and then the offices that really matter like state House and State Senate school boards city council maybe dog catcher and then ballot referendums down ballot races or everything between state legislature all the way down.
Don't get me wrong it's really important to get Trump out of office. But a Democratic president is straight up blocked if they don't have a governing partners across the country.
State legislatures have control over congressional boundaries. That means that politicians are picking their voters instead of the other way around. Every 10 years after the census state legislatures redraw all of those boundaries in about two thirds to 75 percent of the country.
The politicians who were elected in 2010 drew those boundaries so those districts were even more Republican. It's called gerrymandering and it's one of the biggest reasons why our government is so broken today.
And the upcoming election in 2020 is the only time we have a chance to weigh in on who draws these boundaries.
Democrats historically have cared so much about who the president is after Barack Obama was elected in 2008. Over the next eight years we lost more than a thousand seats in state legislatures.
Republicans have been investing in these races for decades and as recently as 2018 the Koch brothers donated money in 75 different races in Texas alone all the way down to a county commissioner. They understand that these local races are where power actually comes from.
If you care about voting rights yes the federal government can do something but as long as Mitch McConnell's in the Senate that's not going to happen. State legislatures are where people can pass laws like voter rights expansion like getting rid of voter I.D. laws like expanding voter registration. State legislatures can do things like expanding access to women's health or they can fuck us over places like Missouri and Georgia have banned abortion.
We have seen even small towns in Missouri and cities in Michigan have done things like decide their sanctuary cities or voluntarily agreed to be in alignment with the Paris Accords. We've seen things like city councils decide that they're going to protect women's health care centers by changing the protest zones around them. We've seen things like cities deciding to change all of their electricity delivery to solar.
If you can vote this fall do it to make sure you're looking at every race and voting for the candidate you believe in. Do your research. Check your local news sources. Google them. Most of them should have Facebook or Twitter pages. There is information you can find out about them. Take a look at the whole ballot.
Take some time. Look into this. This matters especially if it's an issue like that affects you like student loans. We have seen the Pennsylvania state legislature trying to push forward to take action on student loans because Pennsylvanians have the highest average student loan debt of any state across the country. Now granted the only reason the Pennsylvania state legislature is doing that is because we elected more young people to it who have student debt themselves.

Sirleaf initially said she would support her vice president, but amid allegations that she preferred Weah she has backed off publicly supporting either candidate.
Weah draws his support from the younger generation.
This is his third time running for the presidency, and 60 percent of Liberia's population is under 30.
Weah leads the ticket for a coalition party, the Congress for Democratic Change, with Jewel Taylor-Howard as his vice presidential running mate.
She is the ex-wife of imprisoned former warlord and President Charles Taylor.
Boakai has promised to make road reconstruction the centre of his development drive, and also has promised to create 50,000 jobs in the first 150 days.
Tuesday's runoff had been contested twice in court amid claims of irregularities, with its original 7 November date delayed.
It is Liberia's first independently run election since the end of its back-to-back civil wars.
The United Nations has helped to oversee past votes.
